Since Carolina is so happy to give away good players, how does Detroit's 3rd + the UFA rights to Marc Staal sound for Slavin or Pesce sound? :sarcasm:

“We’re fortunate to have (owner) Tom (Dundon), who is willing to go to the cap, but now we have to manage the cap and make the right decisions with the money we have.”

This is what I've been trying to say for years: Dundon is NOT a cheap owner. He's simply looking at the Patriots' brand of long-term dynasty football and wants to translate it to the Hurricanes. That's going to mean a ton of player walkaways via trade if they don't take exactly what the Hurricanes offer. We'll see if that mindset and ethos is successful in the NHL. I'm somewhat skeptical that it works without some modifications, but I'm personally in for the ride and I hope that a few Cups come out of it.

Gotta think there is some money problems in Carolina if they are willing to just let all these guys walk. Gms should be writing up signing bonus contracts like the habs did to Aho and give Mr Svechnikovs agent a call.

Read the above post from Civian. They don't have money problems. Waddell has stated that Dundon has green-lit cap ceiling spending for this season. People need to stop reading the Canes' moves under the biased lens of "our organization is cash-poor", because it hasn't been that way for a few years now.

Hey man i'm an Ottawa fan so i've heard every spin in the book and seen some creative ways to save a buck. I just don't see why a contending team with no real long term commitments and 29M in cap space is gonna let a top tier right shot d man and their potential future goalie walk out the door...

Based on what? A hot streak in the playoffs? Look at the guy's balance of work. He passed through waivers last year for a reason. Sheesh.

Yea he was waived before the season started and then grabbed the starting job and played amazing all season apart from a slow start.

Dundon's comments and actions this offseason make me think he is an NFL, my-way-or-the-highway kind of owner. That doesn't work in the NHL. If an owner or GM balks at a player's demand, there is almost always a GM who will pay out, or take a gamble to see what develops out of a young guy. The NHL does not have the NFL's owner\player schism with shit like non-guaranteed contracts and whatnot.
NFL, aside from QB you can find a replacement for the position. Maybe not as good but you then have the funds to reallocate elsewhere.

If the Canes don’t believe enough in Ned then maybe they sold high on him to Det. Wings don’t have any goalie prospect in the horizon that can be a starter in the nhl. So taking a shot here with Ned.

How was that statement from Waddell a spin? When has Dorion ever said that Melnyk would allow him to spend to the cap?

Let's not be so quick and judge this trade right now. At the beginning of last year, no team wanted Ned. Now, after shortened season and even a shorter sample size from Ned, many posters seem to treat him like a proven top 10 starting goalie. Maybe Carolina could have gotten more for him, sure, but I don't think you can fault them for wanting to go with a veteran goalie given they're in win-now mode. Bernier could very well be the better goalie next couple of seasons.

Senators' Eugene Melnyk pledges to spend close to salary cap from 2021–25 - Sportsnet.ca
Its 2021, year #1 of "unparalleled success" and they are actively trying to shed Tierny at 3.5X1 and Dadonov 5x2.

That isn't close to the same as what the Canes FO is saying. Melnyk does the usual boast where he says that he's going to spend 2 seasons from now, then follows up with the typical cap floor nonsense. Canes FO basically says that they will spend to the cap this year. It's not from Dundon's mouth, either, but from guys working for him.

Why? They were a cap team last year and are expected to be a cap team again this year.
