Good chance Yzerman just found his goaltender for the next 5-8 years. For what amounts to a very late 3rd rounder.

We can only speculate the Canes angle. Most goaltenders don’t evolve till they’re around 25. They spend all those years developing him, he breaks out, and they trade him??

You would think maybe it’s cause they’re getting Fleury or Rask and don’t want over $10 million on goalies….. but then why the Bernier angle??

Very weird deal by Canes.

I'm not saying they should or shouldn't have given him the same deal Detroit did. But I am saying that you basically have next-to-no evidence on evaluating a goalie after 30 games. Goalies are voodoo. He could go on to be Lundquist or turn into another Andrew Hammond. A 30 game run won't tell you which outcome is more likely.

Carolina didn't buy the 30 game sample after 3 seasons of mixed play in the AHL. That's defensible. They probably should've managed the asset better and gotten more in a trade if that was the direction they were going in though.

Ned is now the 25th highest paid goalie in the league. After free agency he'll likely be around 28.

They don't need to believe he's going to be some vezina goalie sign him to this deal.

Based on what? A hot streak in the playoffs? Look at the guy's balance of work. He passed through waivers last year for a reason. Sheesh.

My brain can't comprehend this, they wouldn't re-sign him for 3M? Is Bernier really going to sign much cheaper than that?

I would've signed him to this deal too. But I can't say with any confidence how the rest of Ned's career is going to go.

If you look at the guy's history, he's actually been a decent goalie prospect for most of his career. Sub 2.00 GAA at both WJCs he participated in. He posted decent stats for the Checkers outside of his first year in the AHL, when they weren't terribly good.

Canes fans are all of a sudden slagging the guy but it looks to me like he's always been a pretty strong goalie prospect who got stuck playing on some weak teams while making the transition from junior to the pros.

Goalies almost always pass waivers because NHL teams only have two goalie roster spots and aren't going to fill one with an untested goalie.
