Confirmed Signing with Link: [DET] Bobby Ryan signs with the Red Wings (1 year, $1M)

Explain to me what young player we have that can shoulder 82 games on a team that's inevitably going to get their shit kicked in.

Playing experience is not always a positive if you're getting ruined night in and night out.

To be fair, there's no chance in hell that the upcoming season is 82 games.

We'll be lucky if it's 50+. The 12-13 lockout season started in late January and was 48.

Weigh the pros and cons.
Pro: Ryan plays and scored 25-30 points as a 34-year-old - if he doesn't backslide.
Con: He takes the icetime of kid who could help the rebuild. Kid ends up on waivers and develops for some other team.

I could see some logic in awarding these jobs to veterans if they were good, since we don't have any cap issues.
I don't see much upside to mediocre, past-their-prime veterans when they aren't needed.

I just don’t see any kids in the system ready for a roster spot that he’d be taking.

I really don't mind this, was always a fan of Bobby Ryan during is time with the Ducks. Would rather have him play than Abby.

I don’t get the hate. He costs nothing but a million dollars to a Billionaire family and can be flipped for assets if he has a good season
I dont get it either. And while its highly unlikely any of us know how bad Ryans alcohol issue was, im hopeful a sober Bobby Ryan will look much better then he has in years past.

The problem isn't that. The problem is that there are some fans who have their head so far up their ass about "PLAY ALL THE KIDS ALL THE TIME!" who will complain when the primrose path isn't laid for their young kid du jour to have a full time top 6 roster spot. That they equate not playing kids you drafted because they're not ready to not rebuilding or not being interested in getting better.

Bobby Ryan is getting shit on in this post because he's 34 and no other reason.

E: If a player is going to have a strong chance at being an impact player... You'll see it. Like with Nyquist. He was buried and made it f***ing clear we made a mistake right away. Larkin was taken and made the NHL at 19 because he made it clear he was too good for the NHL. Tatar same deal. At some point, the kids have to be better than whatever plug is in their way. We can't say "Oh, our roster is f***ing garbage and we're so damn bad." while also pushing for our young players who are putting up okay numbers in lower leagues but aren't blowing the doors off to get the time. You don't get a bonus to your chances by being 20-23. You just don't. Because if you get tossed out there on a terrible team as a rookie, you are going to fail the vast majority of the time. Guess what, they're going to have training camps. If Svechnikov is superior to Gagner, it'll work itself out. If Zadina or Timashov are better than Ryan, it'll work itself out.

People should be allowed to criticize a certain signing without being lectured nonstop

But since its Yzerman, we're supposed to just have blind faith. Got it.

No, it's that it is a completely inconsequential signing. Gagner's signing was bitched about. Merrill was bitched about. Ryan was bitched about. Any time we add a player who isn't a 23 year old rookie it's bitched about. I don't want to hear this. It's not about blind faith. It's that Yzerman is signing ZERO risk deals that can be buried or traded with no ill effects and people are treating it like it is complete trash. It's not criticizing a certain signing. It is criticizing EVERY signing. That's what the issue is. "Oh no, we shouldn't add Torey Krug! That's too much money for too old!" "We shouldn't add Kevin Shattenkirk, that's too much money and too old." That's what is tiresome about it. It's not blind faith, it's having any amount of faith that the GM knows what he's doing and isn't just tossing away money to toss it away.

E: You can't promise roster spots to rookies. You're going to have injuries. That's a given. You have to have a roster. If you don't sign guys like Bobby Ryan, what the f*** do you do when Anthony Mantha shatters his hand again and you're putting Timashov in the roster to replace him. Then Timashov or someone else gets hurt. You'd be signing a Bobby Ryan anyway.

They're over there celebrating like this Bobby Ryan is a great signing. It's insanity.

Bobby Ryan is the newest Filppula. The newest Trevor Daley.
Just a waste of time and not a smart move for rebuilding team that finished miles behind the second worst team in the NHL.

I don't care about Merrill. He's either in GR or he can play defense.
We needed a defenseman even before Seider went to Europe, so we're not costing any development time with Merrill.

HE SIGNED FOR 1 MILLION. HE CAN LITERALLY BE CUT AT ANY f***ING TIME IF A KID SHOWS AT TRAINING CAMP AND HE'S READY. This isn't Daley at 3x3, this isn't Filppula at 2x3, this isn't Abdelkader at 7x4.25

And honestly, who the hell is celebrating Bobby Ryan? We're just saying it's not a bad signing as he's veteran depth that can be yeeted into the Sun at any moment.

It's the usual contrarians that only have one tune. Nobody should be surprised or give them the attentiin they want.

This is a perfect no risk/potential nice flip candidiate. As long as we don't step on the Krug landmine I'm happy.

Chill on the all-caps. You're hurting my eyes.

Bobby Ryan is literally the last thing this needed.

MBH. What his your projected line-up for us this coming year?
(Who are these signings keeping buried?)

Remember a bunch of guys will now be locked into Europe until their season ends (Seider)

I really hope Svechnikov does well. He is healthy and Ready. If he deserves a spot on our roster... he will get it.
He's the only one I feel like didn't get a legit look. He got almost no ice time on the Wings but looked good to me when he was out there before Blashill stapled him to the bench.
