After thinking about it, with how many first rounders spoiling under the Oilers... Can't they try and do something like Nurse ++ for Grubauer or Gibson and call it a day? I can't imagine that's worse than Pickard and it doesn't railroad Skinner...

The Oilers do not have enough to attach to Nurse to move him. The only shot of moving him is for an equally bad contract like Huberdeau.

True. I guess their future firsts aren't projecting to be very high. Not like in previous years where there were a lot of top 10/15 range picks.

I was thinking like two firsts unprotected and crossing your fingers hoping they don't win the lottery again, but I guess that wouldn't trick any GMs in taking that contract if they gear up to try and win a cup.

If the Ducks young D are making Fowler expendable as soon as this season, why would they want Nurse at an even higher salary for 6 more years? He'd be in the same situation as Fowler, only harder to move.

The only one of those names I'm interested in is Gibson. I think he'd be an exciting mentor for someone like Wolf who probably kept tabs on a lot of California based NHL goalies as he was growing up.

Grubauer and Merzlikins I think would be more an obvious in the way type of thing. Gibson at least seems more capable of being mentor like to Wolf than the other two (even if much of it is based on his performance from like 5+ seasons ago).
We aren't going to get paid to take Gibson. I don't think Wolf is going to need much in terms of mentorship after this season either, we missed our chance to ease him in slowly when we traded Markstrom. We would be taking one of them on to split starts 50/50 with Wolf and to reach the cap floor, I really couldn't care less if they are a good "mentor" or not

Yeah I didn't mean we'd get paid to take Gibson. Just that he's the only one I'd be interested in.

Didn't realize that moving fowler was for the kids. Thought ducks would move him for assets before his value tanks too much. My mistake.

I think it’s more than possible that none of these goalies are traded in the next 12 months.

Grubauer is probably a buyout next summer, barring an up year.

If Elvis can be somewhat decent maybe they can trade him with retention.

If Gibson can be somewhat decent this year maybe they trade him with retention. I guess Grubauer can be traded with retention too if he has a decent year.

After seeing Korpisalo be traded, for a huge upgrade, no less, it’s not off the table that any of these three guys can be moved. I just don’t think all 3 of them will be. They may have to explore other options to get rid of them, and I could see both Elvis and Grubauer being buyouts in the coming offseason. Gibson probably won’t be bought out, but I wouldn’t be shocked if he were to be.
A Grubauer buyout next summer would cost Seattle ~$8.4m across 4 seasons (caphits of roughly $2m, $3m, $1.7m, $1.7m).

Trading him at 50% retained would cost $5.9m over two seasons, with caphits of $2.95m both years.

Trading him at 50% thus saves them $2.1m in real cash. They'd have a $1m higher cap hit in year 1, but they'd be better off in years 2-4 (albeit roughly equal in year 2).

Georgiev for Grubauer retained could make sense if the Avs believe Grubauer can return to how he played for them before. Georgiev wouldn't be an issue going the other way as he's on an expiring deal.

The destination for Elvis is Columbus. He's here for the year unless he magically becomes a top 5 goalie in the next few months. He has a solid skill set, but has been awful, then really bad the last two years. He's supposedly had a great camp and looks like a NHL goalie again. We'll see. Regardless, unless someone really wants him with no retention...He's staying put. Now, he has a great year...let's see what the offseason brings. Would only have 2 years left next summer.
As much as all of this is true, Columbus is starting next year with 3 NHL goalies unless one is traded or bought out or waived. The two younger cheaper goalies probably aren't going anywhere so that Merzlikins can have a roster spot. I can't personally see Merzlikins being in Columbus 12 months from now, barring a long term injury to one of the 3 goalies or an overpay trade offer for Tarasov / Greaves.

The way I view it is we will need a 2nd goalie next year because Vladar probably isn't coming back. If we are getting paid to take on one of these bigger contracts then it's free assets for a position we will need to fill anyways. Plus it helps us reach the floor.

Ducks have loads of cap room for at least the next year two seasons. By the time they may need it (if several young players earn massive paydays), Gibson will have a year left on his contract. They aren't going to pay to move him now, Verbeek has said he's looking for a hockey trade.

That said, I think Gibson needs to come out strong this season when he's back in game shape. Before last season, his numbers were worse because the backups got the easy/bad offense teams and he faced all the top teams. If you go back to the seasons where Stolarz and Miller were putting up better numbers, the majority of their starts were against bottom 10 offenses and Gibson didn't get to pad his stats against them. Last season was probably the first one where he might have been out played by another Ducks goalie for long stretches.

Nope, the Ducks are desperate to shed both these two contracts at any costs, so they can be the first team to break through the salary cap floor and see if there's original hardwood underneath.
