Despite the Leafs horrendous losing streak, Morgan Rielly continues to impress

I'm saying it's a bit of both here. People are deluded if they don't think these factors can be related. Good on Rielly for taking advantage of the Rangers on an off night defensively, especially in the crease. You need to give the situation perspective rather than viewing it in a vacuum. It isn't to slight a player, but to understand some more.

Look at Stralman and how people hailed him an big offensive boost after recording 3 goals or whatever it was with the Lightning in the first week of the season. He's still sitting on 3 goals. Maybe looking at his competition during that stretch can tell you more or it could be a simple hot streak. Did the same trying to understand how Nash could play so well during the playoffs last year yet not add anything offensively. He was never actively bad.

Rielly is 20 years old and changed his playing style to a more aggressive style ever since the coaching change. Even if Talbot was crap, both his goals were rifled top shelf. They were NHL calibre goals.

Count me in as impressed.Havent had a chance to see him much this year, but he was a stud vs the Rangers last night

Now Gardiner,on the other hand-what the hell is up with him?He looked awful last night.

Confidence issues?

2 nice goals, good to see his offence coming along. Still has a ways to go in his own zone, as seen last night as well, but at least hes producing.

Stop. You're making the rest of us look bad.

He was arguably the best player on the ice last night for either team. Those two goals were rockets, those were the two Talbot had no shot on.

Burke was correct. Best player in the draft.

Die-hard Leafs fan and the answer is comfortably No at this point. I still have Galchenyuk, Forsberg and Lindholm ahead of him.

Argument can be made after that for Rielly/Trouba/Murray/Maata

Yeah, he has ways to go defensively but he has certainly exceeded most of ours expectation with his defensive game, he is not a liability, not even close.

Gardiner has hockey IQ issues. He's got silky smooth moves, but no brain to make proper use of them.

Rielly being a minus player doesn't do him justice for the game last night. First goal Franson ******* up bad. The game winning goal, I will say that Rielly did chase Nash a bit but he dished it off to Zucc and no one was covering him, so it goes in and Rielly gets a minus.

Basically Rielly I can't directly fault Rielly on the goals. Can he get better defensively? Of course. I'm a Leaf fan but i'm not going to say he's a sure fire #1D. I am excited about his potential and hope he continues to develop, he's an important piece for us as we build towards the future.

If Rielly can keep his pace from these last 2 games, he's on pace for 123 goals over a full season. Nervous Gretzky?

Reminds me very much of Brian Rafalski.

Rafalski wasn't nearly as aggressive as Rielly's been since Carlol was fired. Rielly is playing much closer now to how he played in junior--smart positioning and stick work in the defensive zone, gangbusters zone entry and eyebrow-raising puck control in the offensive zone.

While he does have work to do on his defensive game, he's not a liability in that end, he's about average. And when you consider his playstyle in that he controls the puck a lot, while not necessarily "defensive" game, that will keep the puck out of his net.

Although, there was one goal that was pretty blatantly his fault last night, I'm taking about his overall body of work.

He is so great, his advanced stats at his age are awesome.

If he continues to develop like he has, we might have our first real franchise player in decades

Gonna be a good one, not the best player in the draft but definitely what the Leafs have been lacking for ages. They finally might win a Norris with Reilly some day.

Oh yeah...I won't mention him cutting in front of Reimer to screen him for another goal against either.

Oops...I guess I did.
hard to hold that 1 against him, it was a shot from a spot that many didn't expect.

I really think Gardiner needs to go back to basics. Put him with a simple D man with high IQ who can help direct Gardiner.
