Speculation: Derek Stepan Negotiations (9/19-Dreger: "Unlikely" Stepan signs before season opens)

I agree on those numbers. I just wish that both sides would get to it already. It's like with the CBA negotiations. We all know where it's going to end up, but neither side wants to be the first to acknowledge it for fear of weakening their position.

for all we know, it could be structure that is the hold up.

They could be at term (2 years) Dollars (6.5 for arguments sake) but difference in year one to year two.

Year two being more important for Stepan because that is the QO number.

I believe the 30% variance year over year applied to all contracts?

That would mean something along the lines of

Year 1 - 2.85
Year 2 - 3.705

total 6.555

Who knows
 
i hope the deal gets done before too long. but i suspect this drags a bit. i think glen takes the lowered cap very seriously. not sure how much it dropped, but he seems to feel that, if the cap drops 20% all salaries need to drop accordingly. so i dont expect much movement from sather, even in light of the kadri deal. probably considers it a mistake by toronto.

The cap ceiling is $64.3M this year, as agreed upon between the NHL and NHLPA during CBA negotiations last winter. Next season, it'll be based on this year's revenue.
 
First off I'd like to say I find the Rangers HF board one of the most enjoyable to read of all the teams. You all have some very entertaining posters (both good and crazy), and for the most part, very informative debates/discussions.

Being a very big Callahan fan, I distantly like to follow the Rangers, and often find myself visiting here during the season. Until Cally is resigned, I'll Naively hold out hope he may some how find himself on the Avs with his next contract, although I see no way he leaves the Rangers. Of course I was rooting for the Avs to try and steal McDonagh as well.

Now with all that out of the way,
I've been watching this negotiation with Stepan closely since it reminds me of ROR last year. His agent has to know after last year's ROR debacle that some team will eventually be willing to try give him an offer sheet for at least the 2nd round compensation, especially once the season starts and injuries start to occur. Basically forcing the Rangers to match or lose him for poor value. Heck, an idiot like Feaster gave ROR 5m AAV with a 6.5 QO, and I think Step and ROR are very comparable value wise at their respective points in their career.

Just curious if you all see any reason Stepan should/would settle for less than 3.36m AAV when he'll likely get that sooner rather than later from an offer sheet (which he may already have on the table but has yet to sign)?
 
$3.2M is more than the Rangers want to pay and less than Stepan wants. Perfect for both sides. Something like $2.9M in 13-14 and $3.5M in 14-15. The $3.5M becomes the QO when Stepan is arbitration eligible. The 2nd biggest bridge contract behind Duchene who was the 3rd pick in the draft. More than Subban and Couture. More than Neal.

While I would somewhat agree that value wise the players are similar, I thinkt eh situations are a bit different.

Colorado, if I am not mistaken, was not spending ot the cap last year and could easily afford RO'R at the numbers he got.

I think that Stepan wants to be in NY and that may be why no offer-sheet has been signed to date.

The tight space that teh Rangers have to work within, the desire to remain in NY and an understanding of the economics may all be at play here in why Stepan would be willing to take a little less now to help the team remain competitive.

That said, should a team step up with an offer sheet that pays him 6 per over 7 years, he'd be a fool not to sign it.

I'd slap him if he DIDN'T sign it.

If he was arbitration eligible. He would be a 5.5 million dollar player.
Based on the formula.
 
If he received an offer sheet, I would hope Stepan would at least give the Rangers a chance to amend their offer by showing it to them before he signed it. No reason to really go that route and just cause drama if the Rangers are going to match anyway. Say here is what I have received, I'm going to sign it unless you go to something near it.

After all, it's just business and leverage.

No sense to bring Duchene here. His contract should be a base for death sentence to his agent (business wise). I would question Matt's sanity as well. Or at least his guts.
I agree your projections look accurate. I just still can't get over the fact that 5 million palyer will be offered Zherdev's QO after being robbed by bridge contract.

Wait. So you're unwilling to look at a comparable deal in Duchene, but then you bring up Zherdev's deal who is nowhere near a comparable to Stepan?

cheers. so that's a little less than a ten percent drop. i'd guess sather is factoring that into his offer.
 
In the end it's gonna be like 2 years 3.35 per. Everyone knows it. So just sign the damn papers already and let's play some ****in hockey. Christ.

Duchene should have gotten a long term deal and be paid more than my beloved Step whom I would trade for Duchene in a minute (i.e. not immediately ;) ).
Look, I believe that although CBA allows to apply one-size-fits-all approach the players with elite properties shown in early years should be somehow exempt from provisions that allows their clubs to pay them less then they worth should their status be different. The provisions in place intend to compensate the clubs for expenses they incur to develop the player into NHL caliber performer. Players who are NHL ready early cost a hockey organization less. Plus the introduction of cap forced clubs to go the young NHL ready source more and more often. That makes CBA outdated and unfair. IMHO the Offer Sheet practice should be expanded by reduction of penalties for such in form of 1st rounders charged. This way it would be obvious for Sather that he should better buy out Richards in order to keep Stepan. But Slats decided "Hey, We will give Him a Bridge. He is no McD, no one would give top picks for him". I just wish he was wrong. Good GMs give long term deals thier best and do not require from their own guys to cover for mistakes made with FA.
 
That's disappointing. I really expected them to get it done this week. Sucks to hear there's been no movement.
