Love him as our 4th line centre. I just really would hate to see Tipp overplay him and he seems like such a prime tipp overplay candidate.

Tippett seemed to like what McLeod brought at the end of last year despite not producing. I wouldn't be so sure he'll play Ryan over McLeod just because Ryan is a vet. I'm sure situationally Ryan will get some tougher matchups at times but one of the things McLeod has going for him is that he's good at faceoffs too. McLeod was at 50.6% in his first 10 game stint which is pretty good for a rookie. Ryan's FO% last year was 52% and he'll get more draws on the right side and be an improvement over Turris and Haas who were both well below 50%.

DNB did a great interview with Derek Ryan over on The Athletic

Here’s a particularly interesting snippet regarding his free agency experiences and thoughts on joining the Oilers:

“It seemed like the Oilers were a natural landing spot for you this offseason. What was free agency like for you in July?

It was stressful. I’ve been through it twice now and it’s a hard experience. It’s hard on myself and the wife and the kids and everybody. In a couple of days, you’re trying to make life-altering decisions. It’s really hard. But I know that Edmonton was definitely on my radar before we even got to free agency. There were several other options out there, including staying in Calgary. It didn’t really work out, numbers-wise, to stay there.

Going to Edmonton, I thought I had a chance to win. I think that Edmonton has a really good team. They’re on the verge of becoming a serious contender. I thought it was a natural fit for me to have some opportunity to play, to contribute. A lot to gets said about the top guys here in Edmonton. They’re some of the best players in the world, but there’s something that the Oilers have lacked over the last couple of years — the depth in their forward core. Having me and some other guys that we brought in, and other guys step up, hopefully we can contribute more and help out those top guys who do a lot and carry a lot of the load.

I think it’s going to be great. I’m excited to get going and contribute what I can. I agree with you that it was a natural fit.”

Nice to hear that the Oilers were on his radar before free agency, seeing himself as a good fit to be a good depth piece on a team he feels is going to be a contender

Was happy to get him. Loved seeing him with the Golden Bears all those years and he's a smart player that anticipates decently. He brings consistent effort and going to the areas and is a well rounded 200ft player.

Tell me this guy isn't going to end up as a coach. He's so thoughtful and breakdowns play very well. Very good interview.

Yup. He's a good guy to have in the room too I think. Will do wonders for the young guys he plays with too. Part of being able to do the little things that make you successful at this level is just knowing what they are.

You can see how much value he added to the development of guys like Dube / Backlund / Mangiapane in Calgary. Will be a huge value add to guys like McLeod / Benson / Holloway. There's a lot more to actually learn as a guy without the tools from a guy like Ryan than there is from guys like Draisaitl / McDavid / Nurse. When you're a guy that doesn't have those kind of tools.

Don't get me wrong, I think being around a transcendent talent like McDrai has a ton of value; I think the fire from guys like Gretzky / Messier / McDrai can pass on to those around them and make them far better than they would have been otherwise. Even in say Tennis; a guy like Mardy Fish learned that fire it takes to be elite from spending so much time with a guy like Andy Roddick.

But that's much less useful to most guys than what you can learn from a guy like Ryan, because not everyone even has the tools / brain / stamina / raw willpower to compete at that level.

I've seen enough. This guy sucks. Just another veteran that gets a contract that allows him to coast into retirement. Horrendous anticipation, frequently flat-footed, terrible hands and always chasing the play.

It's time to waive him and call up an AHL lifer with a heartbeat.

Zero desperation in his game and it's infuriating to watch.

He is much much worse of a player than i thought he'd be, but then again so is foegle.

This guy is done
McLeod is a massive upgrade at 4th C

Holland needs to go get a 3rd line Center

I'd like to see what we have in Holloway later in the season. Any stop gap C will do in the meantime. Hell, Malone or Cracknell are probably an upgrade at this point :help:

Damn, he truly has been brutal this year.

At this point, what can Holland do, though? He has too many holes to fill (real goalie, solid LD, 3C, etc.) and doesn't possess too many chips.

He's definitely been brutal, but it's funny to see so much vitriol towards the player, and Holland, about this move. He was about as sure a bet as any signing to be at worst a solid 4C. The move was almost universally lauded. Many 180s being performed on this player.

It has absolutely nothing to do with how he is utilized, or the wonderful 'system' he is now playing in.

I still think he can be a good 4C, but I'm not sure what needs to change

I do too. He's been bad but also a lot of bad luck. He looks lost out there, I'm confident he would do better on a team with a system that he's more used to.

I don't get how you can say he was a near sure bet. Don't sign forwards who scored 2 goals & played under 12 minutes a game on a team worse than ours last year, and are on the doorstep of 35, to 2 year deals. FULL STOP.
It's moronic. We have an old stupid gm who is mentally incapable of putting talent around the 2 best offensive players in the world.

You seem like a really smart guy. Can you explain why almost every player gets worse here? Or is it all because "hOlLaNd hAs DeMeNtIa"

Derek Ryan was a good depth Center. I go way back to U of A days with watching the player. The Oilers wree asleep on this player for the decade he could have been useful. he's old now. I figured he might have it left in the tank but obviously not. Anything else?

Everyone knows he was a good depth centre once upon a time. Like everyone has been saying the hot 9 1 start doesn't change the fact he is a washed up player.

I really wish people would stop staring at the simplistic win loss record and see we are carrying a lot of downright junk on this team.

We are. I haven't maintained different. In topsix i think Yama and Nuge ought to be improved on. Thats been my sum take ongoing. In bottomsix we continue to carry a lot of junk deadwood. But knowing that leads me to support the coach more, in that theres still holes in the roster. Moreso when we have so many D down.

In the last multiple games Mcleod is our best bottomsix player. Thats an indictment on what the Holland cat has dragged in.
