I'm still on the fence whether we should bring him back. I think I'd rather roll the dice on one of our young guy instead of him. You see what he can do when he has that one flash a game. His teammates have been all over the place so this can't be too helpful for him. Right now what hurting him the last couple of games is that he has 6 SOG in 6 GP. With his shot he should be getting minimum two shots a game.

I see the arguments on both sides.. I feel like you qualify him for one year and give him a full year under MSL.

But that is contingent on being able to liquidate more bodies from the roster.
This.

It's easy to liquidate bodies from the roster:

1. Trade Hoffman 50% retained or buy him out.
2. Send Armia to Laval.

It's a tough question because the risk isn't that high. Even if he has to sign for more than we'd hope, he'd still fit under the cap. The thing though is we may already have better players than him that will need a place on the roster : RHP, Belzile, Ylonen, Heineman, Farrell.

It's also the fact that he doesn't really look like he has it in him. St. Louis wants our players to play a certain way and there's some things he does, like his positioning and defensive play, that seems absolutely opposite of what St. Louis wants.

I'm fine either way. Qualify him, don't qualify him... It's alright. Won't loose sleep over it.

Either way, I like that management took a gamble on him in return for Dadonov who was never coming back here for next season. We flipped a "no way" for a "let's see" and that, in my eyes, is great asset management. Even if it doesn't pay out this time, it's a sign that this management thinks the approach to team building way better and smarter than anything we have had in decades.

Personally - I would qualify him for another, full "show me" season. We have kids that could fill the role but those players would also benefit from being in Laval, too. Laval should be a strong team starting next season too. Good, winning environment.

There's a recurring good point in this thread that the Habs can make room for Gurianov by sending a lot of players to Laval. It may even be the case that if the Habs don't draft that high next year, and/or there are a ton of injuries (again), and/or the Habs don't acquire Dubois, then next year will be another tanking year. At that point, bodies are bodies, so why not keep Gurianov?

I have no idea of what the rules are but there are rules in place on AHL teams regarding NHL players and games played that limits how many players you can put on a roster. Again, I don't know the rules but you simply can't bury a bunch of NHL players in the minors.

Unless there are some vets shipped out this off-season, there will be a roster crunch to make the team out of camp next year. I'm not sure what the Habs do with Gurianov but my guess is that Hughes will trade him at some point, maybe as soon as this off-season.

I'm sorry but I've been having enormous trouble trying to find the logic behind making such a trade.. and then NOT re-signing the RFA..

He reminds me a bit of Armia, size and skill, and great shot but doesn't utilize any of it nearly enough. I don't think that he is worth 3 million a year for what we have seen from him, not enough desire in his game.
See, I don't think Guri is a 3M+ guy either, but I DO think he's better than freaking Armia.. who is making 3.4m...
So it begs the question AGAIN : just what in the f*** was Bergevin thinking exactly with that contract, my god

2x 2.5 would be so ideal for me with Guri, always tradeable or sneaky value

The question is- will Hughes gives him a QO of 2.9 Mil?

I would give him 1year *2m$ show me deal maximum.

I wouldn’t care if he doesn’t take it and leaves . We have a lot of bodies on the wing already and coming up. Farrell, heineman, slafkovsky, Roy, 2023 top 5 pick, etc

Gurianov playing on the fourth line pretty well signals to me Montreal will not make him an offer this summer. At 3 million money could be spent better in other areas.

Gurianov walks and Armia buy out give that money to a Bunting type. At 25 goals and some grit on left side. Other than Slaf we have no natural left shot on team. Around 5x5 a Bunting type checks a lot of the boxes.

Or simply replace them by Ylonen or RHP or a new kid

The chances of injuries next year are slimmer, due to the law of probability
That’s only if injuries are random. If you have some players who tend to get hurt snd something about team preparation or treatment, maybe allowing guys to come back and play too many minutes too soon, it’s going to keep happening. Evans is injury prone, both body and play style. Monahan’s body is broken. Guhle and Dach get hurt a lot.

People keep talking about the log jam, but uts more of a problem if you are looking at guys like Farrell and Heineman up with the team. So don't.

If guys can be in the AHL without having to clear waivers then play them there and if they dominate then great.

A guy like Ylonen who needs to clear waivers you keep up because he has looked pretty decent , give him his shot.

I mean this is why you want to use your draft picks and develop them so that you get to the point where you have surplus quality and keep the best. We have had these guys for years, as long as they are continuing to improve hang on to them as long as we can to see what they have.

If need be pay a team to take a guy like Armia. Is the cost a 3rd, a 4th ? I'd pay it, and keep a guy who has managed to get this far.

Farrell so far looks like he could use time in the AHL.

But RHP and Slaf are waivers exempt, so do you send them down to make room for Armia and Hoffman? What if Heineman looks better than Slaf, and looks really good in his own right in preseason. Do you send him down to make room for Armia and Hoffman? I hope MSL and Hughes are ready to put him in the AHL or the stands and move out Hoffman in the summer, whether by trade with 50% retained or buyout.

Slafkovsky, Ferrell and Heineman should all get a full year in the AHL.

I'm very optimist about him. I think he can surprise people and become a really good player for Habs. If he have the chance to play more minute, that's going to be fun to watch.

This guy have tools, needed a change of scenary !

I say nothing.

This guy have Kostitsyn's syndrom.
