Whatever Miller is going through is none of our business. Lets just hope he will come back stronger and productive. And as a fan, the sooner the better.
Where does the line go, where it is none of our business?

As an example Pettersson's well documented knee injury is everyone's business. His mental side too has been allowed to be criticized to no end here and I've not seen anyone make a stand like this for him...

Thats just ridicilious.

This is unprecedented in the league for a player of any relevant profile.

If he was trying to play through his issues and struggling on the ice you would be calling him names.

If they wanted to not have speculation they should have handled the PR better.

Okay, but you’re not answering the question:

What if he’s taking a break due to needing a mental break?… as they stated.

If they are being transparent, which I believe they are, then what else is required of them? Nothing - it’s on the ridiculous fan base and media to not to create this fiction. Also, being unprecedented doesn’t really mean anything.

A: What TF is a mental reset? Did anyone use this phrase before Rick Dhaliwal tweeted it? It's such a perfectly vague throw away statement that means nothing specific. I've never heard it uttered by anyone until someone whispered it in Dhaliwal's ear.

B: IF JT "stepping away for personal reasons" (teams words) is about mental health (I'm skeptical), wouldn't the way to "normalize" the situation be for the player to make a statement about the situation and own the narrative?

When Simone Biles pulled out of the Olympics because "the mental wasn't there" she issued a detailed press release to explain the situation and why she did what she did. It nipped the speculation right in the bud.

If the player wasn't prepared to do this, then why on earth didn't the team just put him on the IR for whatever nagging injury kept him out of most of the preseason?

None of the way this was handled makes any sense if the goal was to minimize people talking about it.

Lost me at “what is a mental reset”….

… seriously? It’s a break based on needing to resolve a barrier/ challenge based on an emotional or mental situation.

To dive into it any further is to breach personal boundaries; and this is where the fan entitlement comes in. We aren’t owed the information on what challenges JT Miller is facing. It’s personal. The team understands that, the media, and fans apparently do not. The fact they were this transparent is good and refreshing, and it’s pretty gross there’s people legitimately thinking they *should know this information.

And they spelled it out more specifically than you’re alluding to above. Make whatever excuses you like for those that wanted to speculate, but they by no means needed to release any further details and the wild conjecture is on those that made it, and perpetuated it, not the club.

When did the Canucks say he needed to take mental break? Because there was no mention of that in the original press release. They said he was taking an indefinite LOA “for personal reasons”

The criticism of the Canucks PR department is kind of funny to me. Sure, I guess there's a world where they do something that stops fans and media from speculating, but this is Vancouver. They've said before that they're committed to being honeest with the fans, so if they played this off as an injury, and Miller left the team, it would get out and people would be all over the team for trying to hide a bad situation. I think what they said at the outset was clear enough without giving a play by play of Miller's problems leading up to him stepping away. What else do people expect them to say?

This. Like, do ya’ll want to hear JT is having problems in a personal relationship off the ice and could use a break? Do you want to hear he’s having panic attacks ? Or is depressed?

It’s wild to think more needs to be said here and conjecture is deserving because they “left room for it” as all these speculator apologists are claiming here.

Okay, replace mental break with “personal reasons”.

Nothing changes about anything I said.

Question for you PuckMunchkin

Lets say you work a customer facing job and you had a mental breakdown, would you want your employer or fellow employees telling customers why you were away from work? I know i sure wouldnt appreciate that.

no one is asking to see miller's medical records here. they're just asking for a little bit more transparency than 'personal reasons with no eta for a return'

I guess i just dont understand why folks feel entitled to an answer.

The team has said hes leaving for personal reasons and that should be a good enough answer for everyone, nothing else needs to be said.

i don't think anyone is entitled to an answer but i also don't think you can complain about speculation when you give no information

Yeah I see both sides of this argument as being relevant. And having no information does lead to speculation. Mental burnout (which can have a variety of causes) can lead to substance issues and there's often no known timeline involved. Us fans just have to be patient.

Better than saying he has "concept of a plan."
"we're gonna have a very good team in 2 years"☠️☠️☠️☠️

James elmer benning. 2021. team year ends media interview.

we all know what happened 2 years after that. We literally in a race for Bedard.

getting PTSD. Last time a famous gm told us “we have a plan” was the worst run in franchise history.
To Tocchet's credit, he said those magic words but about Pettersson earlier in the season--back when Petey was finding himself deep in the wilderness every night on the ice:

“He came out early with us, 20 minutes before with the twins (Henrik and Daniel Sedin) and (skills coach) Jason Krog and needs to work on certain parts of his game,” said Tocchet. “One of his better practices and there is reason for it. He’s going to need that approach for awhile and get his confidence.

We have a plan to chip away at his game.” Tocchet per the Province

My fav Benning quote is when he said he can turn the team around in a hurry dated 2014.

The team has been doodoo water for almost a decade after that.

There are other variables at play.

Are people paying money for tickets to see me in this situation? Often buying them in advance? Betting money on the results of my work?

I also think mental health has a bigger stigma in North America than it does in most of EU...

I would not mind being open about my mental health issues. Ive had bouts with depression. Miller whould be diagnosed and should be on LTIR but I guess that is not how the NHL operates.

They didnt state that.
