The problem with the Cat is that he is not am 8 million dollar a year player.Looks to me that he might be closer to a Connor Darland player than a 1st line player.Really did playing with Kane inflate his stats.

Conner Garland
Is that why Debrincat has more goals, and points than Kane this year?

The trade was a calculated gamble for the Sens, hoping it could propel them into a playoff spot. Unfortunately a terrible November combined with injuries to every goalie we have plus Norris, prevented us from seeing the fully functional team for very long.

If he wants to extend long term, it’s a no brainer, this scenario would really only become viable if he refuses to sign anything besides his QO.

Even at that, if Ottawa were to retain up to 50% on the single year, I think they would recoup a decent amount, albeit the 1st Rd Pick would be later obviously.

Unless he isn't interested in staying or asks for an obscene extension, I really don't see the value in selling low on him.

They haven’t really talked extension yet.

But why haven't they talked extension yet? Could it be that Debrincat's agent has said his client intends to hit UFA, and that's the reason for the lack of talks?

Team is in a sale process. Talks should start by end of April.

If the NYI pick is 18-22 I could see them trading it for a player like DeBrincat. They need another top 6 score and he is a good age for their progession.
What about Dobson? DeBrincat/Dobson sounds like a somewhat sensible hockey trade though I don't know the isles defense would be ok with the loss.

I'd probably consider something like NYI 1st + Wahlstrom too. Having Greig, Pinto and Wahlstrom on the 3rd line would certainly help with the bottom 6 inconsistency this team had this year.

NYI don't have a first this year they traded it for Horvat. Also, who's playing 2nd line LWer?

Tkachuk-Stutzle-Giroux
????=Norris-Batherson
Greig-Pinto-Wahlstrom
Joseph/Brassard-Kastelic-Gauthier/Joseph

Chabot-Chychrun
Sanderson-Zub
Kleven/Brannstrom-JBD/Hamonic/Brannstrom?

Very unlikely NYI does this, but if Wahlstrom and Pulock who is willing to waive NTC was offered for Debrincat, I'd take that and run.

I don't think there's a prayer they'd be able to get Pulock but I think Dobson is a reasonable request. I'm not a DeBrincat fan so I'm probably badly biased on this but I'd probably do something like DeBrincat for Dobson or DeBrincat + Brannstrom for Dobson + Wahlstrom unless someone could talk me out of why it's a bad idea.

Tkachuk - Stützle - Giroux
Joseph/xxxxx - Norris - Batherson
Greig - Pinto - Wahlstrom
Joseph/xxxxx - Kastelic - Gauthier

Chabot - Chychrun
Sanderson - Dobson
Kleven - Zub

I like this better than watching DeBrincat stand on the LW with his stick in the air and fans swooning over bottom pair Brannstrom.

Dobson is probably less reasonable than Pulock from a NYI perspective. Guy is a 6’4 22/23 year old D with 2 seasons at ~50 points already.

Neither would be available for DBC, both much more important positions, one on a steal of a contract, the other in his 22 year old season putting up his 2nd season in a row at ~50 points.

NYI isn't trading a cost controlled future top pairing RHD in Dobson.

Mate - if all you know about a prospect is their draft position. Perhaps it’s within your best discretion to not talk about it.

Just say you haven’t seen him play, and move along.

again…show examples…proven examples of players coming from the same scenario To the nhl and having the same success

I agree it was a risk. A big one.

signing him to WO at retaining 50%—- what do you think you can get? Not many playoff contending teams will have $5M in space to afford him. It would have to be a hockey trade.

as was pointed out in the PLD thread, a team could just OS him for one year at a 1st+3rd comp in 24 picks and handcuff Ottawa. If Ottawa matches they can’t trade him next year at deadline. A different team say Toronto could OS him at a 2nd comp level for a cup run next year. Still handcuffs Ottawa.

Dobson will be 10x harder to get.

right now Debrincat is a 1yr rental. Retytn comp will be similar to Reinhart and Fiala if they can get an idea he will sign long term. They are not giving that return up for a 1 yr rental.

If Dobson is gonna be harder to get I'd happily take Pulock in a trade instead and forget I ever heard of DeBrincat. As to the rental comment, he's RFA. You don't rent RFA's. If you're alluding to him signing a contract I don't think it's even a discussion.

Editing this after reflecting on it this afternoon: this response sounded snarky and very matter of fact. Wasn't the intention, honestly. You were correct that there's a real possibility he's not interested in signing a long term contract there, I just find it doubtful. He wouldn't have to live in anyone's shadow there like he does in Ottawa was more my thought process.

Offersheet has to be signed by the player. There would literally be 0 incentive for him to sign anything with less than a 1st, 2nd, 3rd RD Pick Compensation, when his QO would put him in an even higher compensation bracket. Combined with the virtual lack of OS ever being sent, this is a non issue.

A contender would find a way to fit a 30+ goal scorer at 4-5M.

The team is being sold with the new owners coming on board who will want to make these decisions.
