I feel redeemed.
I think his biggest hurdle will be ensuring he can draft enough just good enough players.
He doesn’t need to do much, realistically. Just has to keep the depth coming.
If things go to plan- they never do, but bear with me here- Dallas foreseeably has its top nine of now and the future pretty much locked in. You can interchange the parts, but for the next three seasons some combination of Hintz, Robo, Wyatt, Stank, Bourque, Seguin, and Mush should inhabit seven of the nine top 9 spots. You can hope for Duchene, make a quickly fleeting case for Dellandrea, or say we’ll resign Benn as a case for the last two places. In any case, the top 9 you’ll see for the better part of your next few years is predominantly set.
Same goes for the defense. Miro, Harley, Bichsel and to a lesser extent Nils will be firm pieces. You can argue for Lindell and sign Tanev too. There’s a couple spots to figure out long term, but it’s once again nothing glaring in the top half of your roster’s talent.
Oettinger is your goalie of the future, but honestly I’d say that’s probably the least stable spot just due to how goalies are, and not much coming in ways of a backup. I’d put some scratch down that they’ll spend a pick in the first three rounds on one soon.
The money and contracts space out really well to accommodate this too. All they really have to do is have the farm churn out quality bottom sixers with a top 9 guy every now and again, along with bottom pair guys that can flirt with top 4 minutes the foreseeable future if things don’t go haywire. They won’t need it next year, but in the next couple as guys age out and money’s a priority, it’ll be necessary. It’s kind of bare down there as of now.
