If anyone is thought the difference between stopping the rebuild short and going all-in was losing Morgan Barron and a 2nd, I’m not sure what to tell you. Especially with the chance to resign one of the pieces we got back who is much better than Barron.
No one is saying that.

Having the 18th ranked prospect pool matters slightly less when you have one of the youngest teams in the league and are a playoff lock, however much of an outlier they may be. What they need is their young players to start to live up to their billing, more than anything else.

It does matter slightly yes, that’s true. But it’s not that it matter a lot less when you lack much needed young quality center depth.

I can do both. Why can’t you? I was at the game yesterday and had a wonderful time, that doesn’t stop me from speaking the truth about the team.

They will get better. But they need young center depth desperately. If Kravtsov isn’t returning they need another wing too.

They have work to do.

They need to stop acting like it’s “definitely,” the right thing to buy all the time. It’s not. They need to do a little more stockpiling of talent at forward still.

Once they find a solution to this issue they will be way more insulated long term, but they have ignored their opportunity to fix this problem too many times.

And again, to make sure I’m clear, I’m not saying they shouldn’t have traded for Copp. I’m just saying that this idea that “people don’t know what they are talking about,” if they are not all aboard for renting is bullshit.
What? They haven't been buyers in 5 years. They just very smartly upgraded their roster without giving up any top prospects. It did cost some picks but so what when they recvd some very good value in return.

They’ve turned down too many opportunities to sell off assets for hauls of high end futures in favor of immediate gratification.

But again this is not a discussion about the trade for Copp. I think it’s an overpayment but I’m not gonna flip out. I like the Vatrano and Motte trades if you feel compelled to buy.

I’m arguing alternatively that they need to stockpile more, though. So they either need a plan to do both or a plan to recoup somehow later.

I agree with your latter contention.

But I maintain we still need two young centers and another young winger; guys like Berard and Panjuniemi exist to fill out the roster as cheap replacements for bottom 6 guys, not as legit top 6 talent. There is none of that in our pipeline.
Like I said, any holes are gonna be filled via trade primarily. Rangers have the assets to do it when they need to.

They had 8 1st round picks in 4 years and a bunch of others.

They stock piled a ton of assets. I'm in agreement that they shelled out big contracts way sooner than they should have, but its not like they stopped acquiring assets after.

Yes I know. Trade Kreider, Mika, Panarin, and Trouba. They should bring back a major haul including the young centers you crave. Problem is they won't be back in the playoffs for another 5 years. IN REALITY they have a young team that is currently 3rd in the east and just got better. There is plenty of ammo to continue to get better this off season. I'm just enjoying the ride this year.

They stockpiled a shit ton of defense and then two of their forwards bolted. Another (Howden) washed out.

If those players panned out even marginally we aren’t having this conversation, but they didn’t, so we are. If Lias Andersson was Derek Stepan and Brett Howden was Andrew Copp we’d be fine. Instead we have to replace these guys with similar young talents.

Somehow I think this is still a playoff team with no Kreider but plus Jason Robertson and Anton Lundell.

Why wasn’t Vegas asking themselves what his no trade list was, if they didn’t receive it from Ottawa?

Georgiev will return a pick this offseason. If Kravtsov is being moved, there is likely another pick. Maybe someone really wants Strome's rights depending on the depth of options in free agency.

Still have a 1st. Possibly still have a 2nd if Winnipeg decided to defer one to 2023 or if they make the ECF. If they don't have a 1, it means they got to the final 4. I'm good with that.

I'm not worried about not having the draft picks now, they will get a few this summer. The system is good, just not overly deep. Drury did pretty good this draft, nothing else tells me he can't do it again.

Hopefully this isn't a repeat next deadline and we have the internal depth to get things done, maybe one trade

Yes, but that ship has sailed and the guy we decided to sign is going to score 50 and is a leader so it's really not that bad. Mika, Panarin, and Trouba are pretty good also.

Yes, but now we are short another center and the 50 goal scorer is going on 31 not 23.

It was a buy-now move that will have to be paid for if we want a long term contender. You’ve gotta sell somewhere else or recoup somewhere else or get value somewhere else (Brayden Point in the third).

Hence the bitching - we have work to do. It does matter that our prospect pool isnt stocked. It does matter if we are buyers at the deadline. It does matter what we trade Buch for. It does matter if we run Kravtsov off by being inflexible. Etc.

One or two moves in the wrong direction is ok, but the org has to stop the bleeding here.

You gotta better chance at hitting the powerball than hitting Brayden Point in the third.

And we already got our version of that. The goaltender in the 4th.

It’s not quite that dire but yes, and I was implying that - they will have to get creative or lucky.

Kravstov and Georgiev will be very motivated to give it their best during the playoff run. It will mean increasing their value tremendously as Drury has probably made it clear we are not trading you guys until your value has been properly established. Who knows Kravstov may want to remain here depending on how it goes ....
