Its great for him, but I have to imagine it takes them out of the running for Meier.

Grier isnt going to take a lesser guy and they arent going to trade him when hes red hot or incur the wrath of the fanbase.
When has a UFA to be ever returned a 20 year old this good. Was never the norm. San Jose should trade him but they ain't getter Mercer.

Mercer is a great young player. He always had that tenacity, but I thought what would take his game to the next level would be adding a bit more of a shifty dynamic element. Instead he's gotten better by doubling down on his crash the net style and firing home greasy rebounds.

Regarding Meier - it would be unprecedented for a young ELC player the caliber of Dawson Mercer or Seth Jarvis to get moved for a rental, especially if SJ is unwilling to let teams negotiate an extension with Meier and his agent. They can ask as much as they want, but there is absolutely no basis for it.
Speaking of Jarvis - he has 4 goals and 6 points in his last 3 games since being told he is "in the mix" for a trade. Gamers take these requests personally it seems.

Meier is an RFA. The answer is DeBrincat getting the 7th Overall++ last year.

That's not a ready player what Debrincat returned.

Mercer was never in play for Meier even before his current hot streak.

Devils still have more than enough assets to make the best trade offer for Meier without including Luke, Nemec or Mercer. Grier needs to tone down his expectations or he can go through this process again this summer, but I don't see how the trade offers are going to get any better with teams missing out on having Meier for this playoff run.

Mercer will fill a hyman type role for a long time. He works hard, great on the forecheck, really good hands, and can play with skilled players. Been sayin since last year Devils need to just perma stick him in their top 6.

How about this kid heating up over the last 5 games? 9 points including 7 goals and a huge game winner tonight in overtime to go along with a goal and assist earlier in the game. With his name being involved in the Meier rumors i dont see how the Devils would let this kid go, hes going to be a great player.

Good for him, will look good in teal. :)

Yeah he's just a fantastic all around player. I've been using the Parise comp since day one and it still holds. Skilled, intelligent puck hound who is a lot faster than people think.

The kind of versatility he provides is really valuable. He's excellent on the PK, great in the neutral zone, and a beast on the forecheck.

There's a very real chance he ends up a top 3 player from his draft:

Pretty impressive totals, especially considering how little PP time he gets vs a guy like Raymond. He's been super clutch too - leads his draft class with 4 GWGs

If only we had taken Perfetti or Jarvis or Lundell or Quinn or Askarov ahead of Holtz...

Devils have the pieces to beat almost every offer without including Mercer, Nemec, and Luke.

It’s really just about if the Sharks any of the Devils prospects.
Because he’s an rfa that will likely get permission to seek an extension if the Sharks get their package, I don’t see San Jose settling for anything short of what they want. They can just trade him at the draft if they don’t get their way in the next week.

They’ll get less than if they trade him for a playoff run now. Plus, teams that are in now may just decide to wait a year and get him for nothing but money, or pay less as a rental six months before he hits UFA.

I don’t think him re-signing in SJ is a realistic scenario/the smart move for either party.

He is really good, liked his game against the Habs this past week I definitely understand why the Sharks would want him and why the Devils don't want to move him.

Well then they dont have the pieces do they?

Your evaluation isnt the same as the leagues

They will, just probably not to NJ

There will be teams not willing to wait for him to reach the open market.

The return now will depend on how desperate teams get and how possible it would be to re-sign him. If he’s only dealt as is they’ll obviously get less, but I doubt that’ll happen.

I like Mercer a lot, but I can't see him catching Stutzle, Raymond, or what Sanderson looks to be.

He's already better than Raymond. Significantly out producing him at ES.
I could certainly be wrong, but Raymond's on a far worse team with less elite offensive support and I think he's having one of those 'figure it out' sophomore years that people often call the sophomore jinx.

I like Mercer a lot, but last year I saw hockey sense plays from Raymond that aren't teachable. I think his ceiling's higher. You may well be right that Mercer has been better this year, but I predict Raymond when it's all said and done.

Mercer looking like a serious goal scorer and really unique player. He's fun to watch.

It's embarrassing how the Devils are schooling the Rangers and Islanders in long term franchise building. Well, the whole league ,really. Buffalo, possibly Ducks, CBJ and Detroit doing the same thing too. But as a Ranger fan, kinda of makes me want the entire Rangers management fired and restructured.

Seriously, this Devils team is starting to look scary, from an opposition perspective. Once all the pieces are in place and matured, say in 2-4 years or so, and I am honestly not sure what teams will be competing with them for the top spots in the Metro and East in general. They've laid out an efficient asset management style, chosen the players that will be key to that. Now I don't want to suggest the wouldn't have drafted a winger with one of their top 5 picks in the past decade at some point. They very well might have taken Slafkovsky instead of Nemec in 2022, but at that point, the club had compiled so many key assets, that they could afford to gamble on a winger at that stage. As they were able to do with the Holtz and the 7 pick. But you generally don't see Devils gambling top 5 picks on wingers. Generally, until after they have some high end center and D assets. Same as Montreal have to some extent now that they turned Romanov into Dach, but any way. But they only would have been doing that AFTER taking mostly centers and Dmen in the first rounds. Mercer I believe was drafted as a center, as it often happens that top talent center prospects often end up at the wing anyway. Probably where Chytil should be playing for the Rangers lol. But it's cool, we have another power winger in Brandan Othmann coming up, instead of like Wyatt Johnston or Svechkov or Raty or Stankoven or 10 other centers that are looking like they are developing into top tier NHL center prospects. And hardly a center to speak of. Honestly, it almost doesn't matter how good Othmann ends up at this point, they already failed at that pick just relative to who they should have taken.

Anyway, from a non-Devil fan perspective, the Devils are doing to a terrific job rebuilding, what looks to be a contender for the next decade. They've even sorted their GK, with Schmidt still developing in the wings if something happens to Vit. And as good as Vit has looked, as I think he has the look of at least a long term starting goalie, Akira looking equally as gifted long term if not more.

So I'd say the Devils are in a pretty envious position, throughout the entire league honestly.

Going to be scary seeing Hughes, Nemec, Hughes, Hischier, Bratt, Holtz, Mercer or whomever PP1 and PP2,,,,,, However, no idea how the coaches are going to decide game to game how the lines will go. They could probably just select straws and it'd still work out fine.

Agree with alot here and I have always liked Mercer who isn't a flashy player but a solid one.

Also the Devils have drafted quite well recently but were a mess of a franchise for years before getting back on track and drafting 1,1,2,4,7 over 6 years really helps turn most franchises around.
