Because he won’t be in the NHL for a few years and NHL teams don’t really have control over his development.

I've had it with this "development" non-sense. Dude is a phenom, and a winger to boot. There's no real development to do here, just let time work its magic until his body reach his maturation and then profit.

Do you seriously believe the Canadiens "developed" Guy Lafleur? If anything, they almost ruined him. Or if you prefer a more recent example, Alex Ovechkin? Remember that random couple of down years he had in the middle of his career, when a coach tried to "develop" him? Just let the talent be.

His numbers are impressive mostly due to being a forward til recently. He is basically starting from scratch as a defencemen, great passing and solid shot but everything else is just…. Bad. No poise that I have seen retrieving pucks, poor decision making, not great in board battles and a below average skater. Think Josh Brook with slightly better offensive tools and worse skating and defensively.
That shows how confident he is to undergo this development. It demonstrates character and will to learn. I feel you're dismissing a bit too easely, i seen him play in some clips, he doesn't look all that bad for someone new at D.

Even as a forward 75 points isn't all that bad.

They probably had Simashev right about that rank though if they went with him....
They had him as their 2nd Dman on their list, no one knows where he was on their list though. Probably not super super far like you said.

I strongly disagree. There are serious warts in his offensive game that Bedard doesn't have for example. He plays a very individualistic game which only really works when you're built like a tank. It's like players in the NBA who are 6'2 (Kyrie) who try to play like Kobe. I have no doubt he'll develop it out of his game and learn to use his surroundings better like Gretzky but it's a serious concern for NHL teams

Possibly. But I think they were as shocked as anyone that we did what we did. All that talk about us potentially moving down if Michkov was available and all the good things we had to say about Leonard probably had them pretty confident they wouldn’t have any trouble picking Reinbacher.

What you can teach at 18 years old, you can teach at 21.

If they were so scared of his development being ruined at 21, why did they trade for Kirby Dach, whose development looked catastrophic at that age?

I’m done with this team. Goodluck guys, but MB sucked the passion out of me and this group isn’t doing anything to bring it back.

See you guys in a couple months.

Pretty much all of us wanted Michkov but it is what it is...I'm sad too. Let's see what we have in Reinbacher before we give up on the team.

Come over to the Orville Redenbacher side...

We have cookies.

Michkov was on their no draft list so Reinbacher was the right pick. Arizona had Reinbacher before Simashev so the Habs couldn't trade down.

This thread (and the GDT draft thread) will age like milk.

Just because Arizona draft like idiots (as evidenced by their pick) doesn't mean we have to as well...top 5 you go BPA every time, you don't draft for need. You let the Arizona's of this league do that.

Arizona may pick based on who is likely to want to play for their clown franchise, which might be a very select group of players.

The other teams don't have this problem to the same extent, because they have a real building, for starter, and their team is not always at risk of relocating.

He played the entire year as a 17 years old.
He's got plenty of time to learn.
That's why I brought up Caden Price as a comparison.

Price actually adapted to playing defense pretty well, his IQ is high enough to change his entire playstyle and he's got tools across 200 ft of the ice.

I mean, my eval is that Dragicevic's overall game did not evolve whatsoever over the season. He's the same player that he was back in October. Sure, he's good at setting up plays when the puck is on his blade at the O-zone's blue line but he's got so many warts in the rest of his game. And on the off chance that he eventually understands defense (which I doubt), I still dislike his mobility. He lacks lower body strength and I don't believe that his strides and edge work will be efficient enough at the pro level.

I mean, all the power to you if you like him. I may have a bad read on him. But I was not impressed at all in every single one of my viewings.

I'll cheer for who I want, the players or the entity.

I've cheered for this entity for almost 40 years and have VERY little return on investment.
I've cheered for them for 45 years and I'm still willing to be patient. Yea, I'd like a high-end scorer too but even more so I want to see an organization that is smartly run and has depth on all professional levels.
We're less than two years into this regime. They're CLEARLY not Bergevin or Houle level--all reactive and emotional--and that gives me hope. HuGo still have contracts to clear out from the previous regime that may bring good returns (Anderson; Edmundson) and that Calgary pick in '25 is looking damn juicy too. And we have absolutely no idea who they can and will target in FA when all that dead weight is gone.
If at the end of Hughes' contract they look like they're spinning their wheels I may join in the braying for blood but it's waaaay too early for that. And I'm certainly not going to go cheer the goddamn Flyers because the brain trust didn't draft the player my limited knowledge base thought they should have.

He took over some games, in a strong men's league, at 18, in a subpar team that just got promoted into the NL.

There's absolutely nothing he does wrong on the ice. His gap control, info gathering, transition on both sides of the ice, physicality in winning 50-50s puck protection and closing spaces, his all-around passing game and his shot selection are all great tools he's got.

It's also funny how some are saying that he has no offense in his game when he was pretty much running Kloten's PP at the end of the season.

I also won't talk about the factual info/stats that paints him as having one of the best D-1 for an European dman since it was brought up endless times.

Anyway, no one cares about all that when feelings are hurt.
More I watch him the more I wonder why everyone is saying he only projects as a top 4.

Why not a top 2?? This guy is a beast

Based on the videos I watched on this kid his skating looks amazing. Looks like he has good agility and his straight line speed is very impressive. I am not too familiar of his overall game, i wonder if physicality is a big part of his game or just the odd hit on occasion. However it looks like he competes hard and has all the tools to be a top pairing guy, his puck handling does not look the strongest but time will tell. I am calming down a bit after the let down of no Michkov. The fact is most of us have not likely seen either player play much especially Michkov. Also the aspect of maybe it was a horrible mistake but no sense crying over spilt milk, what is done, is done. I am excited to see how the kid develops and I hope him and Guhle form an elite pairing for over a decade. Up in the air currently but is he likely to play in Laval this coming season?

I would usually agree to be patient, but this was the key moment to capture. I can't get over this one.

Kirby didn't have bad habits as much as he was injury plagued on a team that didn't give him the right opportunity. It's not like Habs developed him. He immediately gelled with Suzuki and caufield

Let's face it, what you say may be all true but it's still cope and rationalizations for what is a most likely a decision made out of corporate cowardice.

I'm not scared of looking at the truth in the eyes, however ugly it is.

I guess our crew really wanted Reinbacher knowing Arizona had this huge boner for him...

Michkovs gonna be a star. Thats a certainty.

I had him 2nd.

With that said, i do believe Reinbacher has the 2nd highest upside of all players in the draft after the the generational talents. (Cb and MM)

Reinbacher is beautiful, hes love, hes life. DO NOT hate on this player. He is all we ever wanted.

Ill say this though. f*** HuGo. I think its apparent now that they cant build a team for shit and are terrible. Passing on Michkov is a direct ticket to gulag and then hell. It sucks because no matter what David does, hes gonna be a bad pick because Michkov is gonna win an Art ross or two.

I cant disagree tbh, i dont know the player a whole lot, i was just looking at RD who could have been taken later on given we did not waste our picks on Newhook. I din't do my due diligence. It just seems to me that we could have played our cards better.

Okay, you explain it. Why wasn’t he drafted 2nd? He clearly had the 2nd highest ceiling. Explain why he went so low. Explain why he was the SECOND Russian taken in that draft?

Players are evaluated on two criteria. Ceiling and risk. Being able to figure out how likely a player is to realize his potential is the secret sauce of drafting. Lots of factors go into this. Maybe they didn’t like his work ethic or his ego. Maybe they felt he regressed this year… all of that would make him a riskier pick.

We don’t have access to the info they do. So I have no idea why they didn’t take him. Personally, I’d have taken the risk - based on what I know. If I knew more, maybe I’d pass.

We will have to wait and see how it shakes out. But I think it’s pretty clear that they passed on the guy with the higher ceiling because they didn’t feel he was worth the risk. RD on the other hand appears to be a safer pick.

And sidenote: YES development matters. Guy Lafleur himself has talked about this. A player needs opportunities to build confidence. Confidence yields results. That’s how you devielop as a player. You only have to look at Doug Wickenheiser to see what bad development yields.

Seider came from nowhere. No one expected that from him. A lot were puzzled by Detroit’s choice.
Not so much to people really paying attention. His stock rose went sky high in the months or weeks leading up to the draft. More than any other from that draft from what I remember.

Though his development curve is pretty amazing, it’s not like he was a non entity going into the draft. Lot of people on this very board were super high on him.

Reinbacher looking better than Seider in his draft year (from what most are saying anyways) is not a trivial thing.

I’m not going to shout anyone down here who are pissed or disappointed. I get it. But this kid’s got a LOT going for him. A lot of fans are allergic to it being a “needs” pick or a “safe” pick which he kind of is in a way. But this kid can absolutely be a stud. He’s just not Uber flashy. He’s pretty damn polished already while I-think there is some solid untapped offensive potential.

He can absolutely be a huge piece of the puzzle. Very convinced of this. Someone else said it and I think it’s pretty true that he’s the safest pick after Bedard. It’s safe, it’s needs AND really high upside. As long as you don’t confuse upside with flash

At the same time, it's totally fine to disagree. I mean, I'm sure some here hold him in higher regard and see him differently. That's the beauty of scouting, you get different perspectives on a player.

So… Hedman lite?
