I don't know why anyone is surprised by the Habs not picking Michkov.
@WeThreeKings shared with everyone before last year's draft a report from Russian media stating that the Habs were one of two teams that would refuse to pick Russians. Nothing has changed since last year to have made me change my mind that they would change that opinion. So all that being said, I for one am not one bit surprised by the snub.
However, I cannot happily accept another typical safe choice by this once proud franchise that has fallen so far away from what they had represented for so long. A standard of excellence to be envied.
We are now fans of the 21st century equivalent of the Howard Ballard Leafs. An ownership that is more concerned about the bottom line than winning Cups. Boys and Girls, until we as fans hit them where it hurts, this disappointment will continue.
Here's a little table for all you optimistic fans thinking that the rebuild will be short. Just look at what they will face in their division:
Boston: Pastrnak still in his prime, Marchand old but still effective, McAvoy, would be #1 D with Habs. And despite being counted out for years, always find a way to stay among the elite teams.
Toronto: Laugh all you want, they are still an elite regular season team. The Habs #1 center would be #3 on the Leafs.
Tampa Bay: Again, like Boston, an ageing, but still elite team, with several core elite pieces still in their prime. I predict a bounce back season due to the fact that they were bounced early in the playoffs. The extended off season will help a club that has played a ton of games over the last 3 seasons.
Florida: Only question mark is on the back side of the ice. I do not see another finals run next season, but they have more that enough scoring punch to overcome that deficiency. If you don't agree, I just need to remind you to re-watch their games this past season against the Habs again.
Buffalo: Young team that is finally showing signs of coming out of their never ending rebuild. Dahlin, Power, Thompson, Cozens have more potential than anything the Habs can ice.
Ottawa: Another young team with an interesting upside potential. Many might disagree, but they have at least one elite player, Stutzle, which the Habs don't have ANYWHERE on the roster.
Detroit: Similar to Ottawa, but just like them, they are ahead of the Habs, simply by having Seider on the roster.
This my friends, is just what the Habs have to face in their own division, never mind the Metro division. They are easily the worst team (on paper) in the division, and I only see the Flyers as a potential rival for last place in the conference next year, and they just picked Michkov.
And the ironic thing is that I don't hate Reinbacher. It just seems like a positional choice, as in my mostly uninformed HO, this was not a BPA choice.
I do feel sorry for the kid though, as I feel that he's going to get a rough ride from many fans and media who absolutely hate the pick.
SIIIIIIGGGHHHHHHH.... go Habs go.........
