They weren't even considering Michkov.. it was Reinbacher or Leonard for them. That was their debate.

Seems to work out, there isn't really anyone with Reinbacher's defensive polish at the top end of this draft who is also a right shot, and the defenseman will push the forwards down.. many of whom I like better or on a similar level to Ryan Leonard.

Anyway the only players I would pick ahead of Reinbacher at this moment it's Michkov, Leonard or Benson. For sure I would rather have Reinbacher over Benson on Habs perspective, Benson is my favorite prospect in 2023 draft, but too small for Habs roster, if Habs don't have Caufield type of guy, they would certainly considering Benson. But they can't have Benson and Caufield in top 6 when playoff comes.

Reinbacher is the best choice for the playoffs run, I believe he will shine on smaller ice, his 2nd year, not great, not bad... just play with a bad team, 3rd coach, that's don't help his progression. He show really good flashes in his 2nd year also.

Reinbacher at AHL level will prove that he is a really really good two-way D. I'm fine with this pick at this moment, in draft day, that's a another story. But after, I like what Gorton and Hughes are trying to build, we have really really good assets to makes good trade for a young great talented forward and still a another high pick this year to draft a beauty forward.

i still think we will regret passing on Michkov or Leonard. Nothing inspiring here, I really believe we drafted a 3-4 dman with a really high pick.
Flame me, hate me, it's just a message board.
Until I see Reinbacher play I will hold judgement but tbh I am currently not all that excited about this pick. Again though I need to see him in NA to really assess.

Of course my amateur assessments mean nothing😁

I was a Leonard myself, but in the grand scheme of things, this kid will absolutely help this D core as we move forward

Hey at least we didn't pick Wright, he's down at 44
Philly was intrested by Habs pick at #5.... Rumours are saying they were ready to trade Cutter Gauthier for that pick. Gauthier is #1 on the Button's list.

Actually he has him at #33. Roy at #30 and Hutson #16.

Friendly reminder that he had Romanov ahead of Caufield, Denisenko ahead of Kaprisov and Zegras, Rasmus Sandin ahead of Harley and Seider, etc.

Not even a knock on him, all prospect ranking lists usually look stupid 2 to 4 years out.

I've watched Reinbacher this last week and there's another game in an hour but his team is so conservative with the defense, rarely do they pinch. He is sharp and aware and he can skate well and move the puck and knows what to do and when. Montreal defense have the green light to go anytime it looks like, not so with his club, That is why I'd like to see him freed to see how he does.

That Niskinin player might become a dominant Dman.

100% agree with you. Reinbacher have top pairing D potential, for sure. People need to be hype with a young D like this in Habs system. Me too, I wanted Michkov, Leonard or Benson. But right now, I have big hope with Hutson, Guhle, Mailloux and Reinbacher to become a dominant top 4 in the future.

Regarding when he comes over, the latest will be in late March. The regular season ends early March, but they are in a relegation slot, and that is a 7-game series. If Kloten wins that, they stay in the top division and his year is done and can come over.

But if they lose the relegation series, they play another 7-game series vs. the top team of the 2nd division. If they win, they stay in the top division. If they lose that one, they get relegated.

I asked Thibault Chatel if Reinbacher will stay the whole way through or if he will leave after the regular season and let Kloten deal with their playoffs (since he won't be there next year). Chatel told me he will stay until the end.

That means there is a good chance we don't see him before late March/early April right?

Montreal season ends on April 16th with 9 games in April.
Laval season ends on April 20th, but only 4 games in April.

Yup. That could happen if they have to play a Game 7 in their first series. And if they lose that series and have to play another series, and that one goes to Game 7, then he will come over later and will likely play a few games in NA. Hoping Laval qualifies for the playoffs and they get an deep run.

The best case scenario would be that they win the first series quickly and their year is done and he comes over sooner.

Again, I wouldn't expect Reinbacher to instantly board a flight once Kloten's season ends. I still don't think that's a certainty. He has other commitments in Switzerland until the summer, not just his gig with Kloten. The situation will be evaluated once Kloten is done.

We have really short memory here, at the training camp there was a moment we thought he might start the year here, for a 18 yrs old dman it's really impressive. I loved the way he close the gap, that he jumps in the attack really well and that he is agressive on the puck carrier but not too much. If he did train 2x a day and really is a student of the game, he will be a top 2 in 4-5 years. I was really not a fan of the pick, almost punched a wall because they passed on Michkov, but this is not Timmins/Bergevin era, most of our draft picks seems to be the right pick so I will trust HuGo on that one again

He didn't. Until the summer, he just doesn't have the time. He also skipped many, if not most practices. Even when he returned from Canada, the first thing he did was go to work.

It's certainly much easier to grant the benefit of the doubt seeing how Slaf is turning out

What an absolute dork

It's not optional. The internship is part of his education. It's a flexible model designed for sports students but between studying, attending courses and holding down a 50% job it's impossible to live a normal life of a hockey pro. Something has to give and that's obviously not the games but team meetings but also training and practices.

I get it, and I respect a program that doesn't completely bend itself over for the benefit of academics involved in sports. It's just funny that he's potentially compromising his d+1 so that he can become a recruiter. Giving me vibes somewhere between Louis Leblanc and Hermie the wannabe Dentist Elf.

Yeah, I respect your opinion and I agree it may not be ideal for his immediate development but at the same time the college system isn't much different and it doesn't necessarily hurt prospects in the long run.

His education should be done this summer (if he passes) so he'll be able to fully focus on hockey for his d+2 season which I believe isn't always case with college students. Also, he may be working as a recruiter during his internship but his courses go way beyond that. It's a pretty solid foundation for the time after his hockey career.

I think some kind of education definitely helps when you're done with hockey, even if you earned lots of money over your career. It may even help during your career if you know how to organize your life or how to deal with money.

are we any closer to figuring out when Reinbacher's season ends?

So in the Swiss League (2nd division), teams need to register in order to have a chance to move up to the National League (1st division). Only two teams did that (Visp & Olten). They have both made the semi-finals of the playoffs and their respective series begins this Friday.

Kloten has to play a 7-game relegation series against Ajoie (the other team in the relegation spot). If Kloten wins that series, they will remain in the National League and Reinbacher's season is officially done and could make his way to NA. And then Ajoie has to deal with the other team.

But if Kloten loses to Ajoie, then they will have to play another 7-game series with the 2nd division team to see who will be up and who will be down.

The best case would be if Kloten beats Ajoie and his season is done because Kloten remains in the top division, which would delay his arrival by a week or so.

If Kloten loses, then it would take either Visp or Olten to win the 2nd division playoffs. If neither of those two teams win it, then even if Kloten loses to Ajoie, they will remain in the top division.

However, the big delay would be if Kloten loses to Ajoie AND has to play one of Visp or Olten in another 7-game series.

Obviously the early date Thibaud mentions is if Kloten sweeps Ajoie. And the latest includes the potential series with Visp/Olten goes to 7 games.

At this rate Michkov will get here before him! :D

Maybe even Habs' 2025 pick from the convoluted Calgary conditions will get here first.
