The way he phrased I think we're talking about Ryan Leonard. Anything else wouldn't make sense and certainly not Michkov. If we didn't know before, this pretty much confirms he was on Montreal's no draft list.
Really ?
Sorry but It confirms nothing at all, but what you wish to see that could fit with your narrative . It's all assumptions, speculations and guesses ; kind of "he said this but you can see his left eyes-brows moving at that moment, so it confirms that he was lying about XYZ ..."

Good, more people are looking into Reinbacher now. He's going to be a good one.

Another poster here said that rumor came from Alex Gascon. Make of that what you will.

Yea for sure bobrov wouldn't risk his job to leak stuff unless instructed by Hugo.
The Arizona staff is a lot less coy about how badly their interview went with Michkov. It wouldn't be surprising he acted like that with more than one team.

Even the Lapointe comment “it was unanimous” is insignificant to me. People are running with this like it’s actual truth.

Scouting department is a team, and teams stick together. The only reason this was said was to calm the temper of some fans and solidify their pick.

I don't see the issue with it being unanimous.

They weren't willing to take Michkov at 5 because of the risks associated with him. If you remove Michkov from the picture, then its not shocking that Reinbacher's selection was unanimous. He was part of the 2nd tier in public lists alongside guys like Dvorsky and Leonard.

They said they were high on Reinbacher since the start of the season, and by December they already had him this high.

I really like you and have for years but you're being overly dramatic. Yes Bobrov's dad has all kinds of insight on the kid but good businesses still have to do their due diligence. Of course the evaluators and decision makers had to meet the kid before the draft. He was likely going to be available when it was their turn to pick. Afterall they were all in Nashville to work under the payroll and per diem of the Montreal Canadiens. I'm sure they met with Fantilli and Carlsson at the Combine knowing they wouldn't be available at #5...maybe even Bedard.

Like WTK so eloquently put it, the lines of communication were open to temper the expectations. Several beat writers wrote that they didn't think the Habs would take Michkov based on their insight. Hughes dropped some hints in press conferences right from lottery night. There's nothing they can do to control raving lunatics who barely know anything about the players and get all caught up in cult-like syndrome because Michkov was a huge phenom at age 16. I haven't seen one single person who wanted Ryan Leonard go apeshit about the pick.

The idiots crossing the line on social media should be held accountable for their own childish and antisocial behaviour. If they're not filling social media with lunatic rants about the Habs draft, they'll be doing it about some politician or some population group. Unfortunately much of this is inescapable in today's society no matter what strategies are used.

I guarantee you'd be all over the Habs brass even more if they said they weren't going to interview Michkov with the rationale that they didn't plan to take him anyway based on what they already know.
There's nothing overly dramatic about thinking that they dropped the ball there. Idea is this....if they indeed said to journalists that they wouldn't pick him, you don't need to have an interview with him. Period.

No, I wouldn't be on them. Why would I? I'd be on them for not picking THE PLAYER. But would have said also whether they interviewed or not, that they must know something we don't.

I dont think its true.

Just before picking Hughes passively-agressively said :

On apprecie votre passion.

That was a clear dart.

Truly, i believe they will simply coach the young men through that and dont give a shit about anything else. How else could they survive this market otherwise?

Listen, every single move is criticised. Every single one. Whatever they do

Gorton was an anglo.
Hughes had an anglo name
StLouis was a pee wee coach
Lecavalier was his buddy
Matheson was a weak D
Dach was a bust
Slaf had no upside

Habs are in an eternal damn if you do, damn if you dont situation.

So i kinda appreciate having a management team that dont give a single f*** and do their things.

What I find really great in Montreal is that people that said all you said were totally wrong.....as if we,d won a Cup. Somehow, shouldnt, we wait for results before saying people are wrong?

Personnally, never had a problem with anybody you named. Just saying....I will smile everytime we come to a conclusion on things that aren't concluded yet. Just like I love people already pencilling a Mailloux on a 1st pair in the NHL while the guy is so not there yet...and might never will be.

We can safely conclude on Suzuki. Or Caufield. But everyting else still needs to be determined.

I'm guessing he was well behaved with teams he wanted to be picked by and was likely a jackass in interviews with teams he didn't want to be picked by.

I know it’s Todd but it’s worth reading
I'm not a fan of Todd but this one was a good read. Thanks for posting the link!

He hit the nail on the head with this quote...

This was not a casual decision. The viciousness with which some fans turned on an 18-year-old kid was shameful, the certainty with which they trumpeted their ignorance a complete embarrassment.

Calling either Bedard or Michkov generational is such an unrealistic bar to put on undersized players who don't have McDavids skating. It's not impossible as their production was out of this world, but man is it a high bar.

Seriously. I don't understand what kind of magic people think these guys possess to expect generational production. Not without McDavid level skating like you said.

McDavid puts up the numbers he does because he is so fast he looks like CGI.

It's super easy and fun to say, also fun to think about.

I seem to remember generational talk about Shane Wright back in 20/21, when he was putting up outstanding stats at the u18s. ( 9g, 14pts in 5 games) Maybe I'm misremembering.

Wright was absolutely being called generational and being compared to McDavid. That's why so many were pissed when we passed on him. It's like you get it in your head that player x is generational because you read it somewhere when they were 15 and that label sticks.

We just drafted the highest ranked defender in the draft. The consensus number one guy on all accounts, and a right handed shot. That’s pretty f***ing awesome.

Do we need scoring? Absolutely. But when I think about it, although I may not have liked it in the moment, getting a terrific right hand shot defenseman with size that can anchor a top pairing? That’s pretty awesome, and arguably the toughest position to fill, other than a first line Center. I’ve been high on Reinbacher all year, I just expected him to be drafted later, but when all the centers went right away, Hughes did what he thought was the best thing to build a championship team in 4-5 years, a top pairing right hand defenseman. That’s a massive piece.

Right now as foundational building blocks we have:

Guhle
Reinbacher
Xhekaj
Barron
Hutson
Mailloux
Harris

That’s about as good of a young group of defensemen as there are in the league. A balance of terrific skill, speed, size and intangibles.

Maybe we should focus more on the positives and try to see the big picture, as we won’t know for a few years how things will turn out… we got a terrific young prospect who will help this team for years. Let’s support him as much as we can.

Did Geoff contact all the media and tell them to start lecturing people about manners regarding players? Suddenly all the habs twitter feeds are 'you should all be ashamed of yourselves' lol.

Good times

There was quite a bit of lunacy regarding Patrik Laine too.

Like, some people wanted him over Matthews. Guy had a legendary shot, is at least 6'4" if not more and is ppg, hasn't scored 50 yet. Matthews demolished the Swiss league to a higher degree imo than Michkov produced in a weak(er) iteration than usual of the KHL He likely would have killed it in Sochi. He's huge too, 6'3", a good skater, stickhandler, the best snap shot in the league... Not generational. And people expect this of 5'10" players, one with very good skating, the other with average speed and still physically weak.Theres so much that needs to go right there. The closest guy in the league to being generational (Draisaitl) is a behemoth.

The Arizona staff is a lot less coy about how badly their interview went with Michkov. It wouldn't be surprising he acted like that with more than one team.

Friedman reported that Michkov went to meet Briere and some Flyers hockey ops guys last Friday in Philadelphia. The Flyers closed down their arena and cancelled all the events they had that day to meet with him in secret. Then they met with him again in Nashville where they introduced him to all the scouts.

So it was clear he only wanted to go to Philly. It's very possible that the teams picking ahead of Philly knew that. So they weren't going to use a high pick to select him (and then end up having another Lindros situation).

I think it must be psychologically akin to someone still being enamoured with the hottest girl from high school even though she isn't hot anymore. That's the only way I can explain it.

The pecking order for top teenage hockey players is not static and changes constantly.

Going back to Reinbacher....I hope we don't solely see him to play alongside a Hutson. I don't want to limit Reinbacher potential 'cause he needs to stay back.

I hope they leave him in Europe (Swiss league or SHL) for another year while working on his puck handling and playmaking. The development team can help him see more options on offense and he can try more skilled plays. He can refine his skating as well. Obviously, he needs to get stronger as well. The ceiling is high there if everything goes right.

Why Philly though ?

I saw Jenny at the 20 year reunion. She's still hot.
