The reason why you take the ‘fans’ response with a grain of salt. I’m in the business and I hardly know 2% of the eligible draftees. Fans parrot what they read and hear (the dreaded consensus). Wright is the presumptive 1OA , how dare the Canadiens take that Slafkovsky player. Michkov is a generational player: how dare the team take an Austrian defenceman in his stead. The dreaded consensus rears it’s ugly head again. No independent assessment. Just blind adherence to the prevailing consensus. And anger when that consensus is ignored.
Thx Chester............you always restore my faith in humanity after your well thought out posts.

I had a feeling Kent would not pick Michkov. Wanted so badly for SJ to pick Michkov. I'm 10000% sure habs GM would have pick Will Smith at #5.
my current theory is that Hughes got a young forward (Newhook) because he knew the fans would moan because we were going with a D in a draft stacked with forwards

We have to consider that his progression came out of nowhere, which means that he started from scratch, which while makes it more impressive. It also could stop fairly fast and it looks probably more impressive than it really is.
If i have learnt something trading stocks...

People are afraid of those stocks that trade at all time high after huge run-up... Well know what, that is where the money is made my friend.

Don't be afraid of Reinbacher development curve or fear that it could stoo fast. Be excited by it, because it can continue at that pace for a while and land a a magnificient player.

Its 100x better seeing this than seeing a player like Wright stagnate. That my friend is a huge red flag.

My current theory is that Hughes got Newhook because he likes him and see untapped potential in him.

So he took a forward with the same size as Michkov? I could understand for Dach. Very rare you will find a 6ft4 center like him. But, this team is full of Small forward. Sakic is also not dumb. We will see how it goes with Newhook.

Honestly to me it felt like they settled too. Feels like they really wanted Smith and michkov was never an option.

I hate that lmao but F it. I agree Reinbacher looks incredible. Hopefully he can prove the Habs brass wrong and exceed expectations
Once the forwards they wanted were gone..................they took the Dman..........we will never know the real reason they and Arizona passed on Michkov.

I see Reinbacher much the same way I did Ghule when we drafted him. 25+ minutes a night, great two-way play, smooth skater #2 potential with a very high floor. Reinbacher is a step ahead in terms of development at the same age, so the potential to hit Seider territory is very much there imo.

I wish more hockey leagues would come together and offer a hockey streaming package so we can easily watch overseas games. Would happily pay $400-$500 a year for access to a dozen+ leagues to follow draft eligible players and Habs prospects.

I'm sure we'll get some leaks over time. Already I saw a report about michkov giving the Habs attitude during the interview

Have the 3 Coyotes fans gone bananas becaue they didn't take MIchkov???
I'd be pretty livid with the Coyotes management given they weren't going to take MM, they could have traded down to Washington or Detroit to overtake Philly.

If Montreal was dead set on Reinbacher (i.e. settling for Leonard would have been a big letdown) they knew he wasn't going to be available past Arizona's pick. But Arizona could have easily added something from Washington or even Detroit and gotten their D at 8 or 9.

Interesting.....................wouldn't a journalist want to ask Boborov his thoughts on a Russian player?
He then, may or may not also tell the truth, or give the political answer?

Unless none of those team wanted to pick Michkov. Then it becomes harder to get good value as you get out of the top 10.

I think he's trying to recreate the Dach model. They could have grabbed a couple of forwards with 31 and 37, they could have taken Cristall and Heidt and said, there's your forwards. But any forward they'd draft would be 4 years away if they make it at all.

True enough though there was lots of chatter about Washington and they haven't been shy about Russian players. Lots of pre draft talk that if MM slipped he was not getting past Washington at 8.

right. getting Newhook means we get to scratch our potential top 6 forward itch and get the big D we need

Amateur scouting is not easy science when you think of it . You have to compare a Switzerland league defenseman with a USHL forward or a Q backup goalie...

Seems logical for Washington to draft Michkov with the history they have with Ovechkin and maybe an easier time to get him over.

Going back over all that was said around the draft, the only teams that really seemed eager to trade up were the Flyers and Nashville (who knows for who, they wanted to make a splash at home).

The thing is being willing to take a certain player at 8 doesn't directly translate into being willing to trade assets to pick him higher.
Ultimately, this draft was the first in a decade where no trade happened in the first round.

I think Hughes wanting to move up was only a game to confuse Grier about his intentions. Im pretty sure Reinbacher was their guy all along. had SJ picked Reinbacher, there is a good possibility Habs trade down. But thats only my opinion, no certainty about that, we will never know.

Timmins once described their draft list as something that was basically in 3D. And the draft isn't just about following your rankings, it's also knowing where other teams might take a guy you really want so you can take it before them.

How many times do people have to say it for it to sink in. Newhook is NOT a small forward. he is 190+ lb. Michkov is small at 170 lb.

I doubt they trade down. IMO they liked Smith. It is possible that they might have been offered a package they thought was better though.
