They did extensive due diligence on Demidov, it would stand to reason they would have done the same on Michkov.

Friedman already reported that Michkov played the process with his agent to get to Philly. I think they might have been the only team to know that he could get out to the NHL 2 years earlier.

Watching how Rotenberg is handling Demidov, I can easily see how a team would be apprehensive about Michkov developing there for 3 seasons.

On top of that, the culture buzz word they used for Reinbacher, I feel like also was a bit of messaging that they knew Michkov didn't want to be there and had a priority to go somewhere else. I don't think that is the type of person they wanted to bring in, someone who explicitly didn't want to be there.

Then you have the rarity of the Reinbacher profile, the fact the Hawks did the same thing with faced with a Demidov vs RD dilemma, and it's easy to see why they made the choice they made.
good points
so let's all focus on the guys we have and not MIchkov
or I could go on for days on Brady T over KK still stings
but we move on

I hope he comes back fully healthy and can become a solid #2 or 3 defenceman because the situation is dire.

The best dman on the team currently is a LD, Guhle. Then the next three are also LDs: Matheson, Hutson, Xhekaj. The best RD is a declining Savard who's getting bailed out a lot by Xhekaj. Then we have Barron who lacks consistency catastrophically and Mailloux in Laval who's not there at all yet and we have to think about the fact that he might never be. Engstrom, another LD of course, has leapfrogged him in Laval IMO

There is a Grand Canyon sized gap at RD at the moment. I might be overdramatic, but Reinbacher not panning out might derail the whole rebuild

Michkov isn’t here, time to accept it. He is not a Montreal Canadien. It’s not productive to be kicking and screaming, it won’t change that.

Reinbacher is.
yes it's very productive, maybe if they bitch enough they can create a hole in the multiverse where the habs did draft Michkov and it becomes our new reality....

the problem with that off course would then be that Michkov would have spent 3 years in Russia came in year 4, got injured early and for the whole year and Reinbacher would have been a 2nd time back to back Norris winner in that 4th year and those same people would be bitching why draft Michkov when Reinbacher was available, didn't the habs know Michkov was going to stay in Russia for 3 years and was a soft player. GOD the habs can't do anything right :thumbd::ha::mad:

Reinbacher is.

I'm very happy with Laine, Demidov and Hage even if we don't have Michkov. The future still looks amazing. Reinbacher and Fowler have great potential.

We have “team-sanctioned” video of Jeff Gorton telling the 2023 draft team they might be making a mistake in regard to pure talent acquisition, but we also must believe that Michkov falling to #7 was the result of a Habs-led psyop to embiggen Reinbacher.

I dig it. I’m on board.

It's hard to see Michkov doing well and wonder what could have been, but the pick makes sense if you take a step back and view it in line with the Demidov pick.

People are quick to say "Imagine the Habs with Demidov and Michkov." That was never going to happen. People don't want to hear that or try to make sense of it, but it was always going to be one or the other. They're different players, but both are still smaller Russian players (in this political climate, no less) who rely on skill to do damage. The team was never taking both of them.

I hated the Reinbacher pick at the time, but after picking Demidov I'm cool with it. It was either going to be Michkov/Cayden Lindstrom/Silayev (or some other RD, C) or Reinbacher/Demidov/Lindstrom. Michkov is here and playing well and Demidov is on Rotenberg "sign a contract or you don't play" island in SKA, that's the only reason the heat on DR has returned.
Right.... imagine Tampa Bay with Kucherov and Point. That would never work!! Nobody would want that here.
Michkov is not just a 'winger' he is an elite threat offensively everytime he is on the ice, just like Kucherov is, a very special talent. Having more of that is never a negative.

CC - NS - Demi
Slaf - Hage - Michkov

I could live with that. I’d take MM’s 27 points over Dach’s 9. On his ELC.

And tbf,

This board would be dead if no one ever ruminated over the decisions made by Habs management whether good/bad/up in the air.

It's quite literally the main point of the board - 'Discussion Board'.
Difference between "discussing" and "dwelling".

6 other teams passed on MM, but only one fanbase constantly behaves like he was born to be a Habs pick and it was taken out from under them.

We've missed out on TONS of players over the years, some guys who went on to be HOFers, but I've never seen this level of FOMO before.

"We should've picked ______" is literally the dumbest complaint I see on this board. It is what it is. It aint Reinbacher's fault, and we don't know the whole story, all we know is from hindsight.
Ok...yesterday all the positivity got me to drinking. Now today with this common sense, I don't know how I'll "cope". Bridge here I come.
