We found a better or at least an as good Michkov the very next draft.

Michkov is possibly a better Caufield. Say we trade Caufield and replace him with Michkov, I don’t think that radically improves our top 6. Caufield is looking excellent at the moment btw.

A good serviceable D is Reinbacher’s floor. Not his ceiling. Like WTK said RD are rare as hell much more rare than wingers.

We trade Caufield and we get I don’t know…a Reinbacher back? lol. So we just skipped a step lol. And again, maybe we don’t because of how rare they are.
plus I would say Caufield seems to have a good attitude and Michov by all accounts doesn't (if you're to believe whats been written about his attitude off course)

Attitude question marks but like you said, don’t know if they’re valid. In the clips I saw of him I didn’t love the effort levels but again I don’t know if I had a big enough of a sample size.

Caufield also had a pretty amazing Cup run while being in his junior eligible year with only a few NHL games under his belt.

Michkov could very well be better than Caufield but as of now, I’m loving Caufield’s game.

Michkov might be very good…. But Hutson is just few points behind him and has to play at a more difficult position.

You could but there's a shortage of RD out there, which is why teams were tripping over themselves to try to Reinbacher in our draft and why Chicago took Levshunov at 2 last year.

Caufield doesn't get you a top pairing RD. Laine won't get you one.

Going back and looking at past trades it’s very rare a top forward gets traded for a RD, the last one I can really find is Hall for Larsson. I wonder if that’s the type of value Montreal would get if they traded Caufield for a RD. Typically if a team has a top RD they don’t trade them.

Absolutely, if it was so easy to trade scoring wingers for top pair D I think Toronto probably would have explored that by now.

I don’t care about Laval, we need him to develop already.
You don't have to care for Laval lol. But Laval going deep into the playoff and winning the calder will give him extra games to play. He is going to miss 50-60gp this year. Playing the last 20 + 7-20 playoff games will be good for him.

Michkov will end up significantly better than Caufield. The comparison would be pretty much akin to saying Kucherov is a better Zuccarello (and I love Caufield, but they're worlds apart).

If we're lucky, Reinbacher comes back in time to play with Laval during a long playoff push! It will give the fan base some hope for next season.

In the best of worlds, Reinbacher represents that shutdown RHD with offensive upside and a good transition game that Lane Hutson needs as a partner. If not, Hughes' most likely only avenue will be finding such a pairing partner on the UFA front, but that could end up screwing up the internal Cap structure..

As an aside, if Laine stays healthy and scores plenty of goals, I expect Montreal to extend him for 8 years at Suzuki money minus 1 dollar.

Demidov will likely make a lot more than Nick well before Nick’s contract ends. That whole thing is just stupid.

This poor guy got death threats when he was drafted. No Michkov has turned into a star. The pressure will be ridiculous.
The pressure will be less if Demidov hits.

I thought it might be the case, but this fan base has shown that it doesn't matter.

We could win 5 consecutive cups and there will be a core group whining that we took Mittelstadt in the 7th round over some goon who played 5 career NHL games.
