I don't give a damn about no shooting percentage. Way to often they lose the initial draw clean and the puck gets cleared (where's the stats on that?).

there are quite a few who feel face offs are meaningless so can’t comprehend how the initial puck possession effects the game.

At the risk of being too optomistic (somthing I have rarely been accused of) I think games like last night will go a long way in the development of this team. They skated with one of the best teams in the league and didn't look out of place. They played different styles to match the Bs. They were excellent defensively. And, while they didn't score, they were without their best play and their second best player has been majorly struggling. If they can manage to get their powerplay, the results will start looking different.

There is still much to like. Results do not tell the full story.

I'll hang up and listen to why I'm wrong.

It's a lot of fun as a long time fan. You can see them focus in on an area, and build on that. Obviously we want to see that pace of evolution speed up, but you can see them starting to get it collectively, at least on elements of the game. The next step is- how do you score playing this way. I think they have to adjust the breakouts to do what MTL and BOS does, and on dump-ins coordinate. Thing is with a young team, sometimes they forget the other elements. Once they get the collective reps where it's pre-conditioned into them, that's when you have a team that's ready to take that next step.

I'm going to keep an eye out for this: The two-man zone entry with a dump in. Puck carrier is slower than the other guy who has speed, puck carrier dumps it to where his speed guy can get the puck on the boards to start a cycle. Right now they are trying these 1 on 3 dump-ins that fail the other way, and if you put it on a counter transition player like McAvoy, it's numbers the other way.

If they fix these two things, I think the offensive zone time, chances off the rush, and goals start coming back. Especially if they are firing from home plate.

This is where I'm at.

Quinn feels like the majority of coaches in this league. Interchangeable and unremarkable. His "brilliance/stupidity" is entirely dependent on how talented his roster is or how much shooting%/save% luck he's getting.

There are definitely aspects of Quinn to criticize but the vitriol feels so over the top. I think if he got shit canned and replaced people would be really disappointed by how little changes if the roster remains untouched lol.

Exactly. I don’t know if it’s people who haven’t been around for a slew of coaches or what but these complaints are word for word the complaints that fans have for every single coach of every single team unless that team is absolutely humming and in the middle of a great streak. It’s the same stuff we’ve heard about every coach for this team as long as I’ve been on this board.

I like Gallant, but between Gallant and Babs, the former was let go twice in a very surprising manner. The situation with FLA was a mishap where you had a guy who was mostly an AHLer that maybe got a little power hungry, but with Vegas it was another surprise dismissal as well. But in both situations, my read was that he was canned because there was disagreements with the higher ups.

With Babs, you are going to get a personality who can be bigger than the team in front of the media.... and I don't think of that as a negative. Especially for this market. Both guys can squeeze a lemon if they have to. Babs gets a lot of winning miles when he has a backend with the right horses. I don't give a shit if he hurts a player's feelings. The players can feel better about themselves when they look at their next paycheck.

The Gallant stuff is weird for sure but Babcock would be a horrible coach for this team. I’d rather keep Quinn by a large, large margin. Babcock is an absolute dinosaur and is riding his supposed accomplishments from a time he had multiple HOF players at his disposal.

I disagree. Outside of that rebuild year in TOR, he's made the playoffs every year. Not all of those teams had a lot of talent. Those post Lidstrom DET teams, and getting in with guys like Marner and Mathews as teenagers, great players sure, but the track record is there. I think you would get the best of all worlds, especially if Babcock can pull what Cooper did and win by playing different styles.

Half the league makes the playoffs. That’s not some big accomplishment that I’d take a coach living in a bygone era based on. Quinn can easily coach this team to just make the playoffs. Babcock is the ultimate make a change just for the hell of it option. Hard pass in my mind.

Cooper imo won by having a stupidly stacked roster to the point even he couldn’t mess it up forever.

I never really go all in on pro or anti this coach or another. About Quinn I'll just say that what continues to frustrate me is a lack of creativity or conviction in his lineup decisions.

He leans too much on having his top two lines rolling and he's unwilling to either reconsider how he constructs the lineup or divides ice time.

It's great to see Kakko getting more time when he deserves it, OTOH he 'loses' the fourth line in two games where they score the only two goals. Moving Chytil onto Panarin's line when he's excelling and Strome is playing like crap is out of the question, OTOH moving Howden into Chytil's spot rather than Rooney is never even a thought, even though Rooney's played well and Howden has struggled off the fourth line.

On a roster brimming with kids it's a useless task to try so hard to insulate them. Spread the talent. Stop with this 20 - 20 - 13 - 7 icetime divide. It's not working.

This is really not a winning issue. If he plays the 4th line more, this board will bitch about Quinn playing his “teachers pets” as opposed to Lafreniere & Kakko. Or grinders vs skill.

I'm not evaluating anything based on what this board's reaction will be...? That's a really weird response.

Just saying that are he to play the 4th line more, this board would be bitching about him playing the 4th line more.

You're overthinking this. The answer is actually quite simple: they miss Lundvist's offense.

The Chytil thing made perfect sense. Why would you break up a line with two kids who are vital to the future of your team when it’s outchancing opponents 5 to 1 or whatever it was?

I don't know where to find the stats but the defense was one of the top scoring defenses in the league last year if I'm remembering correctly.

Caps had/have Kuz, Ov, Orlov, Samsonov all out for COVID protocol
Pitt has a slew of injuries/players out as well
Isles went to the conference finals last year with virtually the same roster

Those are the 3 teams ahead of us. We have been one of the most fortunate teams this year so far in regards to injuries/covid (knock on wood). The context is important

The Rangers year in and year out are one of the least injured teams and the Pens are the most injured. I assume it has something to do with Jim Ramsay. And our 1a player has been MIA because of Covid this year. So it has not alluded us completely.
