Montgomery seemingly had concerns working under Dolan, didn’t want to coach in a big city apparently, he’s working out personal issues and he’s had no more success in this league than Quinn

I’d be floored if he’s an option at this stage

Forgive the stupid question, but why isn't Gallant the obvious choice here? What concerns do we (or the NYR brass) have about him?

Gallant has seemingly become a bit of a mystery in the sport.

On the one hand he seems to get results immediately; on the other hand he seems to be get tuned out rather quickly. Whether by his own doing, or just weird circumstance, he seems to wear out his welcome quickly and his teams don't necessarily look the worse for it afterwards.

So the two biggest questions are: Why doesn't he last, and are his teams achieving because of him or regardless of him?

Thank you for touching on this.

To me, this termination points to something going on in the locker room.
I don't agree. I think this termination is more about Quinn simply not getting the best out of his top two lines in important games. And that's a valid reason to replace him, even though I think he's done a great job with the kids, Zib and Buch

A little bit concerned that the team looked at Quinn, then looked at what was on the market right now and determined they like the options out there better.

Seems like Quinn's college coaching experience didn't translate into the pros very well. Quinn wasn't the worst coach we had...Talbot, Low, Ferguson, and Stewart were among the worst IMO.

And if you go further back, Red Sullivan might been "the" worst.

Highly, highly doubt it. Dolan wants to win now. He doesn't want some sort of developmental, young, unproven coach.

If Dolan is hoping for a Tom Thibodeau type coach like I think he is then that’s a mistake. The Knicks and Rangers roster situations are not comparable imo. To me young and unproven doesn’t have to mean not win now, I look at the Wild as a example of that. I rather Drury convince Dolan that a young coach can win right away then going with an experienced coach just to appease Dolan.

I like whats on the market better too.

Well not everything on the market, but enough where I'm comfortable making this change. Not to mention that there are bound to be a few new candidates who will become available in the coming weeks.

According to the Brooks article, this is the early list:

Gerard Gallant, Rick Tocchet, Bob Hartley, John Tortorella, Mike Babcock and Patrick Roy

Tocchet's record is uninspiring and the almost universal dislike by HFArizona fans would give me pause.

Torts seems like wrong guy for this type of super skilled roster.

Babcock has the resume of success, but younger Toronto stars rebelled against his mind games.

Roy would be risky due to lack of success at pro level.

From what I read on main boards Galant was partly fired due to resistance to use of analytics. That's what a couple posters mentioned. Galant resisted input from Vegas and Florida analytics departments.

Hartley? One Stanley cup but it was awhile ago. Won cups in Russia, AHL and Juniors. He does have a history of working well with star players. Hossa and Kovalchuk in Atlanta. Gaudreau in Calgary. His Avs were loaded with talent.

This is Drury's most important decision this offseason. Far more important than any trade. We could be waiting until the play-offs are finished.

I already do not like the next coach

Sort of being sarcastic, yet all the coaches for the most part do the same things. They all make weird lines, and they all switch them up. All of them pick favorites and play them more than they should. They are all stubborn in the face of reality.

Yeah but if by some miraculous circumstance, you became the Rangers head coach, most of the posters on here would be saying the same shit about you too!

Yes Montgomery had a very public alcohol issue. It's been a few years now and he seems to have it under control.

Plenty of people have overcome substance issues and go on to have success in their lives.

I would think Montgomery wouldn't have interest in NYR b/c the worry he had about our ownership 3 years ago turned out to be true.

Whether that's true or not. Beggars can't necessarily be choosers.

LOL, exactly.

In the 24 years I've been here, I think we've had a horrible, idiotic coach, whom the team won in spite of , at least 6 times.

And every time you'll hear, "No, we didn't hate the last coach nearly this much. This one is different."

The man spittin' truths...

Quinn had several limitations and I don't think he could take the team to the next level. Definitely the right move. Seemed like a decent guy. Good luck to him.

I like the job Martin did with the defense this year. Deserves a medal, but you can't force him on the new coach. That's like the NY Jets trying to force Rhule to accept the coordinators of their choice. Wait a second, we ended up with Gase. Hmm Anyway, let's hope our next coach works out.

True, but with some guys those questions are little more pronounced.
yep, can't disagree. most of the time esp. in team sports there's not nearly enough time (per tenure) to pass a really informed and objective judgement.
There's Arsene Wenger and there's Mourinho...

Probably would have hung onto Martin but that’s just me
Totally agree aside from:

A). Drury is cleaning the slate completely

&

B). He's going to allow the new coach to pick his own assistants

Martin was very good IMO but you have to say "OK Coach... the team is yours... who's your assistants?"

Otherwise that coach comes into a room w a pseudo established culture & regime

Wait, maybe I just talked myself out it lol
