Money is first and foremost.
Who plays center is secondary.
The $ are for years and years. If he at anytime doesnt care for who is or isnt getting him the puck he can force a move.
Counterargument: He has already shown he does not play entirely for the money in his last contract. Much more importantly, he can make up some of the money in endorsements. (Don't know if he still works with Dunkin etc). Moreover, if his scoring totals plummet, bonuses go away.

counterpoint.
his bonuses will be limited to signing bonuses. Guaranteed and one of the holdups. He isnt ELC or over 35.
Second, no way he can make as much in endorsements as he can with say an 88 to 96 M contract. Especially loaded and lock out proof.
Lastly especially where Mass State Income tax will double for him under the new contract.

Good counters, especially, unfortunately, doubling of the tax. Still, I have some hope now that Pasta will take 11 million instead of 13 million.

Sadly I think you are correct on your take - IMO and money is also how you can compare yourself in pro sport, and that is not negligible.
I like to think that who gives you the puck, friendship, team spirit and winning team mentality, the city should be more important that maybe what it is.

The sticking point is the cap hasn’t been finalized with the league- the escrow all that good stuff

Nothing else
That's essentially it.
I didn't buy my kid a pony because I'm not sure how much disposable income I have for a long term commitment after three tumultuous years and a bit of uncertainty going forward. She understands and offered to help pay for the stable costs but ... we're going to Wait and keep discussing it. We both want her to have a great horse at a nice stable but still have to keep the lights on at home. She wants a pony but won't leave home if she doesn't get one.

So, if 88 makes it lets say a week before the trade deadline and there is no signed extension what does Sweeney do?
Try to get him signed even harder? LIke, even entertaining the idea of trading Pastrnak at the deadline is absurd. This is either the last or one of the last chances to get a Cup for Bergeron and Krejci. You are not giving them that chance by trading away one of the most dynamic offensive players in the league.

Pastrnak is probably walking if he's not re-signed by deadline. That's just my gut feeling.

Bruins should not trade him for the sake of having an insanely good year. Whether or not Pastrnak stays this is probably Sweeney's best/last shot at a cup with a team as good as this.

That said, Sweeney's shelf life will probably be determined by how long they can stay a playoff team with/without Pastrnak. So that could go a bunch of different ways...

Am I happy the Bruins are doing well? Of course. Am I anxious about getting Pastrnak re-signed? Absolutely. Sweeney's GM speak of aggressively trying to re-sign him and hasn't finished the deal? Not really happy about it.

If Pastrnak is walking, Bruins should take the playoffs run and let's the chips fall where they do. After thst...Bruins best chance of getting something is offering a sign/trade with the extra 8th year as bait. Sign and trades seem extremely rare, but it would be a crime to let him walk with zero in return, franchisewise.
