Pasta gave us a good discount last time he was up for renewal.
This time he's getting paid. He might get market rate and more... cap likely going higher.

Bruins hesitant to go that high so trying to walk it back down a little bit. Basically heard that’s their “wow holdup” number.
I’d be pretty surprised if we offered over 11 and pasta didn’t take it

If we did that is scary to me

Only 7 guys in the league make over 11

Only 1 winger makes over 11 and that’s Panarin at 11.6

So maybe he wants to be paid as the highest winger in the league ?

But he is reaching if he is asking for over 12 he is not close to McDavid/McKinnon level

Guaranteed Pasta's agent is using the Panarin deal as a comparable. $11.6 AAV, signed before anyone knew that the cap would rise as much as it looks it will over the next 8 years, and a player who is productive but doesn't score as many goals as Pasta. Goals > Assists.

At this point getting Pasta for $12Mx8 during his prime years would be very reasonable, especially given that there will be elite players before the end of his next contract who will be signing for $15+M. Pasta's camp has most of the leverage. They know Pasta can easily sign for $13+M if he decides to go on the market. DS has been great at re-signing stars, but he might have to dig a little deeper in his pockets in the case of Pasta.

$12M is not “reasonable”. The only way he gets $13M on the open market is if he goes to a bad team. Maybe he would but I don’t see it.

Both sides should just play ball now

Don needs to realize the new generation isn’t all gonna take pay cuts
&
Pastas camp should know he ain’t McKinnon or McDavid and plays wing not center a less valuable spot

And they just meet in the middle at 11

If pasta wants to win like he says then he kinda has to stay here or sign with another contender in free agency at a major major discount

The only teams that can afford over a 10 million dollar player this off-season is

Chicago
Anaheim
Detroit
New Jersey
Buffalo
Arizona

And possibly Carolina

And I’m not even sure those teams could sign him cause most of the teams with cap space only have about 10-12 players under contract

Boston has the 7th most cap space this off-season
Either a contender finds a way to clear 12-15 million and signs him

Or he goes to a horrible team and becomes the highest paid player in the league and is forgotten about

Or he stays in Boston for 10-11 million and continues to build his legacy as the greatest goal scorer in the history of the team on an iconic club where he is comfortable

I will disagree that $12M is not reasonable given the comparables, given Pasta's age, and given when those comparable contracts were signed relative to cap hit. Obviously I hope he signs for less than $12M, but it is certainly reasonable. My guess is $10.5-11.5M is what will ultimately be what he signs for in Boston, however if his camp wants go total hardball then I'd still pony up $12M if I were in DS' shoes worst case scenario.

I don't think he will ultimately decide to go to a bad team either, but he can still get $13M+ on the open market, and that is likely something his agent has pointed out in negotiations.

There's no 2nd thought needed to giving him 12 per.

He already gave the team a big discount on his last deal and he's worth every penny. Stop screwing around trying to cheap out and save 500k-1m a season. You don't jerk around elite players when it's time to deal.

For the record, I’m not happy this has continued into the season.

However, Sweeney has earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to retaining his guys. His track record, to this point, is flawless. This has been his strength since he took on the role of GM.
It hasnt been perfect. Krug situation is an example. Lost him for nothing also

I'm not siding with Sweeney. But perhaps ... Point, Kucherov contracts are a point of reference. And some form of hometown discount is sought out/to maintain a competitive team

As I just posted. Why didnt TBL doll out 11 or 12m per to Kucherov/Point? One could argue ...they deserved it. But they took a hometown like discount

I dont know if the Bruins see Pasta in the same light as Matthews or Mckinnon. And also the organization would unlikely overpay for Panarin or Marner as NYR/Leafs did (Pasta agent comp... well if were him I would use these two wingers contract as examples)

Since DS has been GM. Dont think he has "given in" and overpaid any one player. Will he/Jacobs budge for Pasta?

if he does go for nothing it should leave a gaping hole in the front office.
I agree.....but

If the Bruins play well in the regular season. And make it past the 1st round.

Regardless of what happens with Pasta situation. Don bodyguard Neely ... will come to his defense.

If the Bruins are dead set on 10 or 10.5m per. But Pasta/agent wont backdown from 11.5m ...

I think the situation becomes silly. Someone needs to bite the bullet....

I could see Pasta/agent, argue they took one for the team (current deal). Now its time to honor/pay a little extra (scratch our back).

I will have an ulcer if something doesnt get done before the trade deadline :(

This deal really has to be 8 years 11M. I mean its just begging for an 88M dollar deal
