Going into the season their goalies were Toskala and The Monster (who was a rookie with no North American experience).

Was it really a shock that goalie tandem couldn't get the job done?

The Hockey News thought Toskala was the 6th best goalie in hockey then, and most leaf fans agreed.

Some of us were ridiculed for mentioning the little fact that Toskala stank.

Considering Luongo's contract and the situation the Nucks are in.. That's horrible.

Haven't heard about the CBA clause that reverts the salary back to the OG team for contracts over 6 years?

Your primary premise for not wanting him (contract) is not a valid argument anymore.

No but if he retires we do not benefit in any way. No matter what he's still a terrible contract.

One thing we have to keep in mind re: Luongo is the "Luongo Rule" of the new CBA. Even in Luongo retires, we will have the cap savings we inherit from Vancouver applied to our cap after he retires over the remaining length of his contract. So if he plays 7 years with us and retires with 3 years left, we'll have paid him 44 mill or something and his cap hit over that span was only 37 mill or something along those lines. As far as I know, that 7 mill will be applied to our cap over the 3 years he's retired. Paying 2.3 mill a year for someone not playing? No thank you.

Exactly.

Bob is 100% correct.

I really suggest everyone tune in to attune their way of thinking.

If this firing is to do with Luongo, we might be in trouble.

Personally I think he should have been fired anyway but that's just my opinion.

The Luongo deal has to be avoided and if Burke took the fall, then good for him.

He really is a man of ideals.

Agreed. As I've said, I like Burke and still do. I didn't want him to be fired but at the same time realized there was every reason to do so. But for the apparent reason out there, that's not the reason he should have been.

He gets my respect for standing his ground.

It's the worst trade that I've seen thrown out in the past 10 years. Disregard kadri even Gardiner straight up for Lu is overpayment. And no you're not ****ed in the head but just a massive homer. Ask a neutral fan who wins that trade I mean its obvious

I am a massive homer? You just said the difference in the aforementioned trade was Ryan Kesler. Really? Both of them couldn't get you Kesler alone.

Then somebody at the Hockey News should have been fired. That is complete nonsense.

But to be fair, three consecutive GMs of the Leafs made the same mistake. Ferguson, Fletcher and Burke all thought Toskala could be a starting goalie in the NHL.

I would argue that Burke's version of that same mistake was the biggest, because by the time he arrived on the scene Toskala's track record indicated that he was crap.

In toronto it's never the goalie's fault.

My thoughts precisely. Call me an idealist, but if he had to be fired, he should have been fired 8 months ago after our epic collapse, or in June if we didn't make the playoffs... based on his results. He shouldn't have been fired for his views on Luongo or his style or any of that garbage.

Bud wake up kesler is damaged goods. Vancouver's window is closing they had a great chance to win the cup and I don't blame Lou soley, but he was a big part of the meltdown

I wonder where Burke goes next? Surely he won't stay as an advisor if he gets a GM opportunity from another team.

Uh, no its not.

If he retires, the remaining years on his contract count for 5 mil against the cap. The money doesnt matter, the cap hit does.

It's only a portion of that. Some journalist did a chart on what the Leafs would be on the hook for if he retired at various ages

In what universe is Gardiner worth Benn or Duchene?

In what universe is a 34 year old goalie with 10 yrs on his deal, an absolute albatross of a contract, worth a top prospect like Gardiner?

According to a lot of Canucks fans, Luongo is worth that if not more. They really should put the crack pipe down.

My guess is that eventually he'll wind up with a team in a non-traditional market that needs a high profile GM to help sell tickets and the game.

I don't get the ripping of MLSE.

Are they not allowed to fire a GM after 4 and half years of no results?

4 and a half years of never meddling and giving that GM absolute full control with no oversight?

what did MLSE do wrong here?
