No team would ever trade for that contract. Ever.

Jeff Skinner@50% retained, Noah Ostlund and 1st for Darnel Nurse @50% retained
New Winner for the worst proposal I have seen this week. Trade a ppg winger at 50% retention, an excellent prospect, AND a 1st round pick, for an overpaid low IQ d man who can't break 45 points when he has two of the best players in the league in front of him.

No thanks...

Darnell Nurse is overpaid by quite a bit. Hard stop. How much? I say $2m.

At negotiation time, he obviously oversold himself and Holland over bought.

I believe he his trying to do more than he is capable of… trying to be elite, like he is being paid but he is not capable of.

The thing that frustrates me is the Oilers didn’t lock him up long term prior to him having a good year, in a season like none other we have ever seen (COVID North division). I get that the Edmonton Oilers are not going to sign a UFA of Nurse’s calibre… they just don’t choose Edmonton.

We all know the Oilers (of Edmonton) have to overpay almost everyone. It’s rare if they don’t. I suspect Holland felt forced to also pay the McDavid friend tax.

Darnell Nurse is a low end 1st pairing D who has truly never had a great D partner (Schultz, Bear, Ceci). If he plays within what is his game, he will still be overpaid but would be far more effective. He needs to focus on net front presence… be big, physical and nasty… skating the puck out of the zone and joining the rush occasionally.

I don’t think you have a great understanding of the salary cap if you don’t get how much value Nurse under 5 mil for 6 years holds. I thought skinner only had 2 years left but with that being said his pysical presence beside Power on the 2nd pair would give Buffalo one of the best Dcores in NHL history.

You’re acting like he’s not a serviceable #2-3 dman. Yes he’s overpaid but he’s probably as good as a player like Rielly ( leafs fan ) or Brodin. Very physical and decent offensively/Defensively

I’m also assuming you aren’t on this site much if you haven’t seen a McDavid proposal this week

Yes as my join date and post count attest I am not frequently here.

He is a 2nd pair D man. The package you are asking for, HUGE overpay for a 2nd pair d man. Ppg winger at 50% retention, top rated prospect and a 1st. No 2nd pairing D man in the league is worth that. You are out to lunch.

Name 60 dman better then Nurse and I’ll pay for your trip for an all inclusive trip for you to Cuba. Also I’m a die hard leaf’s fan I have a Toronto maple leafs bed set at my parents still I’ll acknowledge Morgan Rielly is not better then Nurse. So for your extreame ignorance/bias I’ll ask you for these 64 dman ( technically in order for him to be 2nd pairing 64 dman need to be better then him ) these dman you name must be better then Morgan Rielly and Shea Theodore aswell. In order for you to be unbiased

The suggestion to get rid of Nurse doesn't make a lot of sense even if he is overpaid. Who would replace him? Nurse would likely be scoring in the range of 55-60 points a season if he played on the powerplay regularly. He has also never had a defense partner that should be above 3rd pairing to play with as well. He certainly does make errors and is overpaid but he is still a good player. Getting rid of him just because he makes 1.5-2 million more then is ideal without a replacement strategy is pointless. The Oilers would need someone to replace is 20+ minutes, 40 even strength points, and the +20 a season he brings playing against the other teams best players every night.

Cost notwithstanding, do you believe there are teams out there that would be interested in Darnell Nurse at $7.25M for the next 7 years?

Nurse at 7.25 is far too risky for what he brings, to be comfortable trading for him you need closer to 6.25.

Length of contract and skill set you need to get him at a number you can potentially retain more one. A team wanting him would be looking for a solid #2/#3, 7.25 is too much for that

Now with more snark
The thing is in this day and age, it's not that the player is good or bad it is the player is playing up to his salary, over it or below it. Nurse at 3 mil a year would be a steal. His contract today will be bad for a few years then it will level off and if he is not part of the long-term picture, he can be dumped for 3 years with retention. It is the post-salary cap reality.

Oh please name a few... I'm curious at which teams would be on-board with adding that guy for that cap hit for that term especially when you consider what 95% of oilers fans actually think about him on their own forum.
What, so I can debate with a bunch of wanna be GMs on HF? I'm too intelligent and I don't have the time for that. I can sense the intelligence of most posters on this site and I have no intentions of entering into a debate of such kind.

There are some very accurate reads on Nurse on this site... some I don't like, because the Oilers are my team... but they are true... his game has holes. Others opinions are so full of holes and lacking consideration for the situation... then you have the trolls who just want to get under the skin of Oiler fans... sometimes deservedly so.

You can disagree with me, but IMO, there would be many teams that would offer Darnell Nurse $7.25m AAV for the next 7 years if he were a UFA tomorrow.

Here's your list of comparable contracts (courtesy of CapFriendly)...

Between 6.25 - 8.25 who signed as UFAs and contracts expire between 25/26 - 30/31...

While the proposal sucks. Let’s not pretend Jeff Skinner is magically a PPG winger now after having 1 season where he barely eclipsed PPG.

I agree with you that you can't discount the 2 seasons where Skinner had 23 & 14 points but to be fair, you also can't discount the 33 goal - 63 point season he had two years ago before his PPG season he had last year.

Skinner has had over 60 points - three out of the past 5 seasons.

Yes, many of them.

There is maybe 4 teams in the NHL who would take Nurse even at $4mil. The guy is terrible and will only get worse as he gets older.

The guy is Phaneuf-lite, all physical tools with negative hockey IQ. At least Phaneuf earned his contract and had some good years. Nurse had one "good" season where he racked up points playing a bad Ottawa team over and over again. Nurse is overpaid by like $5 mi, he's a bottom pairing guy on most teams in the league. He is terrible.

Not disagreeing with you, but you’re kind of in the ballpark. The question is, in what role can Nurse be effective. That’s what sensible teams will pay for.

If the answer to that is that he’s more effective as a 2nd pairing D, you might be right, with the 4 M. It depends on the range. But in a world where smart and effective top pairing D, like Toews, make 7.25, it’s hard to make a case for top pairing judgment liabilities like Nurse.

In the end, I think you are right - you may be just too intelligent for these kinds of discussions. Enjoy your season.
