Nothingburger. That’s a horrendous *turnover* by Warren Fogele if anything.

You can assign some blame to him for missing the net, but what percentage of blame do you assign to Nurse for forgetting there are two NHL hockey players behind him and leaking a totally preventable 2 on 0?

*A lot of blame. You can’t take a bad angle shot like that when your team has numbers and miss the net and clear the puck for the other team, it’s gonna spring an odd man rush even if Nurse stayed back. That shit got you benched when I played.

As for Nurse, he was trying to jump in the play as late man. The play and space were there to be made.

If anything his D partner Ceci should have recognized and backed off, all he did on that play was get in the way and cause oilers to be bunched up on that side of the ice

You're excusing Nurse 100%, or to what degree exactly?

I'm asking you to assign relative blame. You blamed Foegele (which I agreed with, in part), and Ceci - but Nurse can see Ceci in front of him and still chose to commit. Even if the puck goes on net, that's going the other way for Vancouver a lot of the time depending on who controls the rebound.

This is just a risk you can't take for an offensive chance. Look when 25 turns around, he's at the offensive hash marks as the last man back. Mind boggling.

Nurse has probably the worst contract in the league right now. It is absolute cap death on account of the term length. The return will be less than EDM fans will want. Retention will be a must.

Worst contract in the league? Oh boy.

Look I am no Oilers fan, and I love to laugh at Nurse as much as anyone but.. Yeah not close. He's not even the worse contract on the Oilers, which would be Campbell.

There really shouldn't have been much "risk" here in jumping up in the play. Look at how wideopen the middle of the ice is for Nurse the trailer, with EDM having total control of puck.

Janmark deserves more blame for having zero vision. Then Fogele with the awful defacto turnover that doesn't count as one. The fact that an NHL player couldn't see/recognize that and complete the pass to him is embarassing. It should have been an A+ scoring chance for Nurse.

There's definitley some knocks on Nurse, and plays you can put under a microscope, this isn't it. This is shitty depth Oiler forwards being shitty.

There should be an automatic hyperbole/exageration filter for any thread or post that mentions Nurse.

They blind hate and ridiculous statements in this thread are like reading an MadLib book done by a 6yr old.

Darnell Nurse is overpaid by quite a bit. Hard stop. How much? I say $2m.

At negotiation time, he obviously oversold himself and Holland over bought.

I believe he his trying to do more than he is capable of… trying to be elite, like he is being paid but he is not capable of.

The thing that frustrates me is the Oilers didn’t lock him up long term prior to him having a good year, in a season like none other we have ever seen (COVID North division). I get that the Edmonton Oilers are not going to sign a UFA of Nurse’s calibre… they just don’t choose Edmonton.

We all know the Oilers (of Edmonton) have to overpay almost everyone. It’s rare if they don’t. I suspect Holland felt forced to also pay the McDavid friend tax.

Darnell Nurse is a low end 1st pairing D who has truly never had a great D partner (Schultz, Bear, Ceci). If he plays within what is his game, he will still be overpaid but would be far more effective. He needs to focus on net front presence… be big, physical and nasty… skating the puck out of the zone and joining the rush occasionally.

I think the reality is, he's a $5M puck rushing offensive defenceman with a penchant for total brainfarts and bad dirty plays. In this day and age, maybe that's a $6.25M UFA for a desperate team willing to pony up top dollar.

But the real problem is...what exactly is his role or deployment? He's too mistake prone and lacks basic ability to make a functional outlet pass, so he's not going to be a defensive "matchup" defenceman. He had his big contract year playing a ton of butter soft offensive minutes leeching off of playing with McDavey and Draisaitl and happened to score a bunch of goals doing it. But is he really the guy you want as your primary offensive D and "puck mover" when the only way he's really any good at driving offense from the back end, is by skating it up himself...or jumping kamikaze style into the rush to follow up and finish a play?

The other aspect of this is...how much can you actually pay a guy who realistically needs a "babysitter" rather than being a guy who can carry a lesser partner? Sure, he's had some lackluster partners over his career...but he's also generally been an intermittent liability in those minutes who hasn't flattered their partner much at all (they often end up seeming to take the blame as scapegoats for the whole thing). At some point, the salary crosses a threshold where you really have to expect that player to be a "babysitter" not the "babysittee". Just in terms of salary structure...it doesn't necessarily make any sense to have the "cheaper" player anchoring and stabilizing the pairing, and you really can't afford a babysitter that expensive. Certainly not at $9.5M.

It's basically like some others have stated. Nurse's deal is arguably one of the very most unmovable in the league, all things considered. As the Oilers are continuing to discover...it's incredibly difficult, if not impossible to build a truly contender caliber defence around a guy who lacks a clear role and is overpaid by as much as he is at the top-end of your salary structure.

The hyperbole/ exaggeration comes from both sides.
I think most reasonable people can acknowledge that it’s a terrible contract that is only going to get worse. And at the same time acknowledge that he’s not a bad D. Just significantly overpaid.

It only comes from haters. There isn't a single Oiler fan who preaches he has a good contract, or say that he's unfallable.

It's everyone who says he's a $4million dman, isn't a top pairing guy, a complete siv defensively, a pylon, a one season wonder, etc... It's just dumb at this point.

Why laughable? $4 mil for a bottom pairing is already pushing it. The guy is a bottom pair d-man on most teams in the league, he doesn't even crack the NHL on some.
He’s not a bottom pairing guy, he’s a 2nd pairing guy overpaid by roughly 3 million. Nurse at around 6 million would be ideal/perfect

Huberdeau for Nurse this offseason if Calgary doesn't keep any of their UFA D.
Why would Edmonton trade a top 4 defenseman, something they desperately need more of, for a 10.5 million dollar, 7 year contract for a forward that they don’t need that handcuffs them even more over the long term?

How does that make any sense when trying to improve their chances?

Phaneuf was actually a very good dman in Calgary. It's just all the media and expectations went through the roof when he went to Toronto.
Three things happened to Phaneuf when he left Calgary.

1) Can't be mentioned
2) Hitting rules changed
3) Hip problems

But make no mistake, he was a beast in Calgary

There's a lot of shit in this thread lol

I think most people can agree that:

1- Nurse's contract is one of the worst in the league, because both longevity and cap
2- Nurse is overpaid by 2M / 2,5M per year
3- Nurse ain't a bad player: ideally he's on a second pair, but can play on first when needed

I think that Darnell Nurse at 7 x 7 is worth something good, but I don't know how Edmonton would feel about retaining 2,25M for 7 years to send Nurse away

It would be doable but Edmonton isn’t an attractive market, how do they get a player to replace nurse without giving a similar overpayment?

You can get a solid player for 7M per year IMO, problem is, they would have to find a way to somehow patch the hole that a now traded Nurse would make

At the end of the day, I don't think that Edmonton can/should trade him, as of now at least

Not sure why everyone is beating up on Nurse. Is he overpaid? Yes, by 2.5M. Is he a good player? Yes, he's a #3 dman.

Should Nurse anchor a top-pairing. Of course not. Could he be a solid #2 on a pairing that has a #1 D? Nurse would be in his element if he had a #1 D to play alongside.

Putting Nurse and Ceci together and expecting them to succeed is a fools errand. Ceci should be a bottom pairing dman at this point in his career.

The issue with the Oilers starts with Campbell. His caphit could have been put to better use.
