Not sure why everyone is beating up on Nurse. Is he overpaid? Yes, by 2.5M. Is he a good player? Yes, he's a #3 dman.

Should Nurse anchor a top-pairing. Of course not. Could he be a solid #2 on a pairing that has a #1 D? Nurse would be in his element if he had a #1 D to play alongside.

Putting Nurse and Ceci together and expecting them to succeed is a fools errand. Ceci should be a bottom pairing dman at this point in his career.

The issue with the Oilers starts with Campbell. His caphit could have been put to better use.
Because he’s a 9.25 million dollar anchor

We would have to add some major sweeteners and would piss away any potential cup window unless we somehow fleeced the team getting him. Very, very unlikely. He is not worthless to the team on the ice, but he is definitely underperforming his contract.
"Cup window" I literally snorted soda out my nose when I read that.

Campbell isn’t overpaid by 4M
Ummmmm. Who's gonna tell him?

What, so I can debate with a bunch of wanna be GMs on HF? I'm too intelligent and I don't have the time for that. I can sense the intelligence of most posters on this site and I have no intentions of entering into a debate of such kind.

There are some very accurate reads on Nurse on this site... some I don't like, because the Oilers are my team... but they are true... his game has holes. Others opinions are so full of holes and lacking consideration for the situation... then you have the trolls who just want to get under the skin of Oiler fans... sometimes deservedly so.

You can disagree with me, but IMO, there would be many teams that would offer Darnell Nurse $7.25m AAV for the next 7 years if he were a UFA tomorrow.

Here's your list of comparable contracts (courtesy of CapFriendly)...

Between 6.25 - 8.25 who signed as UFAs and contracts expire between 25/26 - 30/31...

$9.25m... not very many... only desperate &/or dumb ones.
Every single one of those players is miles ahead of nurse so of course that got those contracts at the time they did. Nurse contact was horrid the second it was signed.. Like its night and day. Like not even close. I mean seeing how You're so intelligent (quick tip,,people who say they are intelligent often aren't) so clearly you would of know than...

We’ve been hearing this his entire career as an oiler.

Can’t put him with bear, cause bear sucks.

Can’t put him with Barrie, cause barrie sucks.

Can’t put him with Bouchard. Cause Bouchard sucks.

Meanwhile, Ekholm comes in and is able to play perfectly fine with Bouchard and elevate his game. Seems to me ekholm is just better plain and simple. Maybe nurse is the one that needs baby sitting himself.

And theld be very good
You are actually making the point you are arguing against because those guys you listed are all bad on D and make their partner look worse.
Ekholm is a stay at home guy. I have always said if Nurse would just forget about offense and focus on D he would be very good. Unfortunately he doesnt seem to want to do that.

It’s hands down the worst contract in the league, closest you’ll ever see to immovable
More nonsense. Even you know this is not true.

He might be 2nd pairing guy... but if I'm building a team I wouldn't want him on my 2nd pair. He a dumb player.

Nurse at 25% retained, McLeod, Holloway, Broberg and a 1st for Roman Josi and Cody Glass.

That’s the kind of overpayment it would take to upgrade on Nurse.

Why would Edmonton trade a top 4 defenseman, something they desperately need more of, for a 10.5 million dollar, 7 year contract for a forward that they don’t need that handcuffs them even more over the long term?

How does that make any sense when trying to improve their chances?
When you say a top 4 defenseman it's a bit misleading. When you say a 3/4 making 9.25 it's a bit more accurate. Nurse is the weaker partner on a second pair. He does have some intangibles like toughness that increase that value a bit. He'd currently be a bottom pair guy in Calgary for instance.

The value of Nurse on that contract is negative. Unless Edmonton can get an immediate replacement that’s better though there is no reason to ship him out.

So much hate towards Edmonton in here. You have a Coyotes fan saying he’d be worth 3 million. You have a Calgary fan saying only 4 teams would be interested at 4 million. Nurse may not be worth his contract but those comments are either fueled by hatred towards Edmonton or not having a clue about Nurse as a player. It’s one thing to say he’s overpaid but to act like he’s a bottom pairing dman is ridiculous.

The thing is...how much can you actually afford to pay a guy who needs a #1D as a babysitter? An awful lot less than $9.5M. Probably even more than $2.5M less if you want a competitive blueline.

I also just kind of disagree with this notion that Nurse would suddenly be fine with a true #1D as his partner. It's a moot point because that's not financially realistic given his awful contract...but even in the scope of a "best on best" tournament or something where the salary cap isn't a factor, i still just don't think that Nurse plays the sort of game that would be remotely complementary to a true #1D.

He might be more "individually skilled" than others in some respects, but the way he plays the game is just not conducive to playing with a smart play-controlling defenceman at all. Nurse plays the game going forward. For better or worse, that's what he does. "See puck, get puck, skate with puck". What he needs...is a babysitter who is content to just sit back, let him wander around erratically, skate the puck up...and clean up his numerous catastrophes.

That's a very different partner profile than a true #1D. While i'm sure that caliber of player would figure it out...it would quite literally be dragging the #1Ds performance down to do so, in favor of Nurse just spazzing around doing what he does. He's one of those sort of players who is very hard to play with as a D partner.

You are actually making the point you are arguing against because those guys you listed are all bad on D and make their partner look worse.

Weird though, because Quin Hughes looked just fine, great even...playing with Bear. I wonder why that is.
