Nurse is a good player, a top 3 or 4 dman that can play on 1st pairing if needed, but that contract is straight up a top 5 worst contract in the league

I can't imagine a team willing to take on that

With a lot of retention, Edmonton could get a fine piece IMO, but at 9.25M, he's pretty much not moveable
A 6,25 Nurse could fetch one or two nice assets IMO

Brutal contract. I don’t see a way out of it. Oilers will need to see it through and find someone that can cover for him. The issue now is who can pair with Nurse and have a cheap contract?

The only sliver of hope is Edmonton's recent investment in advanced analytics... much too late of course, but it's still the best way to potentially uncover a Forsling type who can deliver exceptional results 5 on 5 in the short-term for $3M or less.

Otherwise I really think Brett Pesce is a semi-realistic option. The Canes need draft capital and/or young roster players who can out-play their contracts to help keep them under the cap, plus a decently priced #4 with term if they do trade him. The Oilers have all of that to offer (1st '24, Broberg, Holloway, Ceci) and would still have a few months to figure out how the hell to extend Pesce.

How many times has this been said only to have said player traded.
when people say that, they means it cannot be moved without retention. A large retention is worst than having the team saddled with that albatross contract. Nurse has 6 years remaining, I doubt edm will retain more than 1.25 million of that for that duration. Yet, moving Nurse at 6 x 8 million is still an impossible task.

Maybe when its down to 4 in 2026

With 6 years remaining (7 including this one), it's pretty much an impossible task, unless there's retention

Darnell Nurse at 6,25M could fetch a 1st + from a young team who wants a cost controlled solid dman for long term
no team is going to retain 3 million for 6 years

It's a lot of cash, but it frees 6,25 for them to spend on another player if they choose too.

It's not the best option for them, but trading Nurse at full cap, with 6 years remaining (7 including this one), ain't an option at all

Thing is, Nurse at 6.25 would have significant value. Nurse at 9.25 doesn’t, but nobody is getting Nurse at 6.25 for nothing, that’s abysmal asset management.

Yeah, I agree with that

A 6,25M Nurse could get you some real good assets
A young team who is looking for a solid dman with cap controlled might pay a 1st ++

Like I said, the problem ain't Nurse, it's his contract

If Nurse wasn't being relied upon like prime Pronger he would look a lot better.

If the Oilers can keep his minutes down a bit and have reliable second pairing to throw out for some defensive minutes we'd be talking about Nurse the same way we do Josi or Fox or Makar.

Nurse has nothing on EK though.

That's why the Oilers traded for Ekholm. Make no mistake, Ekholm-Bouchard is Edmonton's top pairing. The coaching staff knows Nurse-Ceci isn't good enough together, which is why they were messing around with Broberg on the 2nd pairing all preseason with Ekholm out.

Ekholm-Bouchard
Nurse-Ceci
Kulak-Broberg
Desharnais

That's Edmonton's healthy group of defenceman. I think the trade deadline will see the Oilers grabbing the best RD available, likely in a Ceci+1st+Bourgault+ package.

Which guys are the top pairings depend on chemistry play style and lots of other factors.

Nurse can do everything at a high level for 20+ minutes a night. There are not 30 guys in the league capable of that. And anyone who says Nurse is a #3 should watch some more hockey.

Nurse would be talked about like the likes of Makar or Josi or Fox? f*** no. He's Like five stratospheres below.

Nurse is INSANELY overpaid. Even at $6.25m he's not a positive asset. He's a $4-$5m player, max. He's a 3D-4D, and that still feels generous.

Didn't he and Ceci have a strong season together pretty recently? If Ekholm - Bouchard are that #1 D pair, then Nurse - Ceci could perhaps still eat some pretty strong minutes? That said, $9 million is still quite the chunk of change.
