Without 25% retained you won’t get much value for him. He’s worth more to Edmonton than he is to the other 31 teams

He is not better than Cam Fowler, and I am not a huge Cam Fowler fan (ask the Ducks board) and Nurse makes about 3 million dollars more....Nurse should pay Drai/McDavid 3 million dollars a year...and his agent an extra million a year for pulling that deal out.
Nurse is more of a 6 million dollar defenceman

I get he is overpaid ,but he really had the Oil over a barrel as there was no way to realistically replace him...He is a legit top 4 defender, and they are never cheap...Saying this there is likely no chance he is on the trade block

Isnt he Oilers #1 dman, if they trade him what kind of message would that send McDavid & Draisaitl ?

He is never getting traded. Oilers get to keep that one. He has had one exceptional year, last year. And he was rewarded. This year, he looks like a $6mm dman again. That's where he should be. Oilers should have waited to sign that one. They still need a goalie and lock up JP next year. Not going to happen with terrible contracts like this.

He's getting paid elite number 1 or 2 defenseman money, something that he's really not. So if there's no retention, the Oilers are at the mercy of lesser offers, or taking back a bunch of bad contract dollars.

It is a hard to swallow contract. Most teams won't view him as a top pairing defenseman unless they can pair him with an absolutely defensive stalwart

I think the longer we go the more $9 Million + contracts for defensemen we'll see. Then fans will say, yeah, that is about average for what he is.

Regardless there is no chance he gets moved by Edmonton, and not because no team would want him. The Oilers don't have anyone else who can play 1st pairing minutes. His average TOI is 26+ minutes a night FFS.

Nurse is a top pairing D . He just isn't a number 1 D . Ideally you want him paired with a better D

Hedman Nurse
DD Nurse
Nurse Jones from a few years again
Prime Pronger would be good .

Nurse also needs to get back to playing a sound game after 16 goal season he thinks he Paul Coffee .

Chychrun makes $4.6 :)

And I do agree, max retention is overkill. Still, it will take retention + an add I think to trade him.

As bad as Nurse has been ...He hasn't really bad . Chychrun isn't even close to as good this year .

I get that Nurse is polarizing and hasn’t been in top form this year but people who think he’s a $6 million defenseman starting in 2022-23 are seriously over-exaggerating what kind of blueliner you can get for reasonable money these days, especially one that has and can put up points…which, like it or not, pays.

Sry - Every team would probably want the player, but not one team would pay 9M+ for him. Hell, if you play 55yr old Yandle 45min/g, would he be worth 15M?

I'm not crazy about the price, but I don't think anyone is getting a top pairing D who scores 40+ points a year for under $9 million on their contract coming off their RFA years. It's going to be the standard price for any D in that category.

There will be no discussion on retention.
Then his value is probably something like a 4th round pick to a select few bad teams with a lot of cap space. But I doubt there is any market for him at his AAV. Not a trade that makes sense for the Oil either.

like Seth Jones, this was a dubious contract the moment it was signed. This guy isn’t realistically tradable.

He's having a perfectly fine season. He's overpaid, but our defense without him would be a complete disaster.

(Not that it isn't already)

Toews signed for less and is a significantly better player.
You can always nitpick contracts, there are obviously some great contracts (for the team) in this league, if those players got to renegotiate their contracts now, they would get paid a lot more. It doesnt really mean anything when discussing Nurse contract, its apples and oranges.

Nurse is a great player, but that contract is hilariously bad.
6.5-7 is a fair deal for him.
9.25 or whatever it is, will completely ruin his trade value.
What were the Oil thinking with that one?

Id like him on the Canucks, but not a chance with that contract.
Id rather hold on to OEL and Myers contracts than Nurse. That says a lot. Lol

Granted Toews signed that deal after a 28 point season and is a UFA again in 3 years where he'll almost certainly want a lot more money.

Also is Toews looking as good having to play the minutes Nurse does on the Oilers? Colorado has Makar ahead of Toews and better roster depth overall. Put Nurse on Colorado and he would look really, really good I don't have much doubt.

It makes no sense for Oilers to trade Nurse since they are in a win-now situation. Draisaitl and McDavids contracts are ticking.

IF they were to trade Nurse it would have to be a hockey deal, they would have to get big needs back and not futures.
And..One of their biggest needs are on defense. And they cant replace Nurse.

Some people think its easy to just sign players to whatever they think is fair....Every team and fanbase usually has to deal with some player with a contract that seems high...

How about people stop bashing and just understand that hockey is a business and players have the right to go for the most dollars they can get,and then we dont have to all try and defend this kind of thing when it happens...Which it does for every team

Why would the Oilers miss the playoffs? Division isn't strong and they have been pretty decent this year.

There's still ample time for them to turn it around, but since their hot start to the season, the Oilers have been sputtering, playing less than .5oo hockey, which won't cut it going forward.
