Yes, Darnell Nurse is the first rookie D in history to lack poise in his own end.
The guy was in over his head last year, playing bigger minutes than he should have due to injuries and our poor depth. He played the primary shutdown role at the WJC 2 years ago, would he really have been given that role (or even made the team) if he was so devoid of hockey IQ?
Poor reference. There's a lot of politics involved in world play.
Jacob Trouba (RFA Rights)
Darnell Nurse
Thoughts?
Oilers are lacking in right handed shots, Jets with lefties. Both are equally dominant players in terms of physicality. The way I see it the pairing would shake up to be
Klefbom - Larsson
Sekera - Trouba
Davidson - Fayne/Reinhart
Enstrom - Byfuglien
Nurse - Myers
Stuart - Postma/Morrissey
Jets get fleeced...Nurse's ceiling is slowly getting lower and lower. He went from top pairing potential to 2nd pairing potential but right now it doesn't look like a sure thing either. He still needs to do a lot of work to be a #4 or maybe even a #3 whereas Trouba is already there.
And yes, I know Nurse has 2 better defenders ahead of him...he still wouldn't be a good #3/4 even without them 'blocking' him.
They do? Nurse costs a lot less and doesn't need to be protected. I wouldn't do this as an Oilers fan.
Yes, this is a much better argument.
Even if there were "politics" at play (which sounds ridiculous), wouldn't that only land him a roster spot? Wouldn't getting placed in the shutdown role be based on his play? Or is the coaching based on "politics" too?
Can winnipeg afford toruba?
This! I've never seen a guy so lost in his own end. Plays with a grenade on his stick can't make a breakout pass to save his life. The low hockey iq is the scary part. Maybe he can develop into a solid D he definitely can skate has all the tools but it's a wait and see.
really bothers me how quick people are to writing off nurse after his rookie season. guess 90% of all NHL prospects are busts and useless too.
I'm Edmonton I don't do this. Not because Nurse is better, but because Winnipeg is going to get pushed around this year and western rival shouldnt be bailing them out of that hole by providing toughness. Byfuglian has the whole team to look out for.
