At the end of they day, they're pretty similar. Both overly not impressive IMO. I personally like my defensemen to be actual good defenders. This is something that has been holding this team back for years, defenders who can actually defend. Neither of these guys are good enough imo. Severson is great in the offensive zone and just bad defensively. Unless you can find a stay home dman to cover for him like a Ryan Pulock, guys who excels defensively, Severson is going to continue to be a problem.
The way I see it, Severson will continue to decline defensively as this contract ages on. Your practical steps are to put on the 3rd line RD with a stay at home LD who can help him. We have a guy who is making 6+ million who can't be trusted to carry a pairing without another above average defensive dman. That is what it is, but let's not pretend there's no problems. Worse case scenario he declines even more and this is a complete albatross that will need to be bought in roughly 2 years. Best case, Evason tells him he needs to develop more snarl to his game and not treat the puck like a live grenade in the d zone. Unfortunately, I'm pretty certain he is what he is at this point.
As far as Provorov goes, the guy will want 8 million+ which is hilarious for the caliber of player that he is. You sell him to the highest bidder and go after a real defenseman like Dobson in the offseason via trade or other defensive options that can help cover for all "puck moving dmen" that Jarmo stuck this team with. Whether that be someone like Pelech, which would be a cheaper option or ideally Dobson who would cost Chinakhov +, you help solve a problem this team desperately needs to solve, defenders who can defend.
