No. And even at his worst he’s much better than JJ. Severson and Christiansen as a bottom pair ain’t bad at all.

The clown is being paid $6.25 million/season for 6 1/2 more seasons. The question isn’t whether he is better that 59 year old JMFJ, it is whether he is doing the basic things you expect from an NHL defenseman. If he isn’t going to battle for pucks then let him sit and watch. I hope someone on the team gets him a pretty pink tutu for Christmas.

I’m talking about him being scratched.

Me too. Scratch his ass again on Friday. Maybe he’ll learn a lesson.

Everybody whines about this team needs veteran leadership and stuff like that. So let’s hold a guy that was drafted in the same draft as Ryan Murray to play some freaking defense. Severson is the 2nd highest paid player on the team. You can’t let the 2nd highest paid player be a bum. Not a good signal to everyone else.

At his worst he’s still better than JJ or Harris. We can try to move his contract later, but not playing him and giving minutes to other two guys hurts our chances of winning games.

We aren’t making the playoffs. If a highly paid veteran defenseman isn’t going to work enough, you sit his ass and show your displeasure. You tell the media he is a healthy scratch. You play JMFJ ahead of him. You let him sit on his ass and ponder what got him in that spot. You let all the young defensemen (and young forwards) see that you are sitting a 30 year old guy who is sadly one of the 6 best defensemen not because he isn’t good enough but because you don’t like his effort and/or decision making. Then during and after two or three scratches you clearly tell him what he is doing wrong and what your expectations are. In his next start if he does something wrong, you bench him for a period. This is about setting a tone. You don’t punish Fantilli because you don’t want him to play scared, but you sure as hell punish a veteran who doesn’t play defense the right way.

If you want to do that then please call up someone better or trade for a 7D bc JJ is an AHL quality D rn.

I’ve been in favor of improving the defense for years. Nobody has been as critical of this defense as me for the last 4 years. I would offer Voronkov, Minnesota’s first, and Severson for a legit right D with term today if we were allowed to make trades over the holidays.

We need to get you away from your keyboard.

Severson’s contract is awful and a huge impediment to us ever being a Cup contender. So yes, we might have to do something like trade our Russian unicorn scoring monster to get rid of him. It is really going to hurt to get rid of Severson. But we should.

Severson’s advanced stats have shown him to be a net a positive. His offense is borderline elite. We shouldn’t be giving up great assets like Voronkov to get rid of a player who is doing fine

Right now, his contract isn't horrible and with the cap going up, his play will need to drop off a cliff on a constant basis to be considered that

For WHO!?

Voronkov is one of the most unique players in the NHL.

Severson isn’t some negative value or impact player, the way you’re attempting to make it seem.

Provorov is a better skater.

And that’s it.

At the end of they day, they're pretty similar. Both overly not impressive IMO. I personally like my defensemen to be actual good defenders. This is something that has been holding this team back for years, defenders who can actually defend. Neither of these guys are good enough imo. Severson is great in the offensive zone and just bad defensively. Unless you can find a stay home dman to cover for him like a Ryan Pulock, guys who excels defensively, Severson is going to continue to be a problem.

The way I see it, Severson will continue to decline defensively as this contract ages on. Your practical steps are to put on the 3rd line RD with a stay at home LD who can help him. We have a guy who is making 6+ million who can't be trusted to carry a pairing without another above average defensive dman. That is what it is, but let's not pretend there's no problems. Worse case scenario he declines even more and this is a complete albatross that will need to be bought in roughly 2 years. Best case, Evason tells him he needs to develop more snarl to his game and not treat the puck like a live grenade in the d zone. Unfortunately, I'm pretty certain he is what he is at this point.

As far as Provorov goes, the guy will want 8 million+ which is hilarious for the caliber of player that he is. You sell him to the highest bidder and go after a real defenseman like Dobson in the offseason via trade or other defensive options that can help cover for all "puck moving dmen" that Jarmo stuck this team with. Whether that be someone like Pelech, which would be a cheaper option or ideally Dobson who would cost Chinakhov +, you help solve a problem this team desperately needs to solve, defenders who can defend.
