They may not have the cap space now, but they could have space in 22 days when free agency opens. A lot can change in 22 days. Look at how the CBJ blue line has changed in just 72 hours.Im not so sure about that. A cursory look to me makes me think the teams that might want Severson dont have the cap space for Severson while the teams with the cap space (Anaheim, Chicago, etc.) aren’t ready to make such a move. NJ is actually a team that is on the rise and could afford him, and they obviously weren’t willing to match our offer. If you have an example of a team that would compete with us and have the cap space, please share it.
This. Acquiring Severson also gives us more depth when injuries hit the D.Thats a good point. Rushing the kids vs rushing the rebuild (which I dont think this is). Creating competition is a good thing. 8 is a lot of years but there are options to get out of the end of that deal
NHL contract grades: Blue Jackets add Damon Severson in sign-and-trade
Severson could be a good fit for the Blue Jackets, but Columbus' defense still isn't inspiring enough to turn things around.theathletic.com
Dom Lefvneirchsfcjsrhbkrnfrsnsv@^%@ just loves to sh*t on everything Columbus does with metrics no matter how slanted they are
Sounds like they are getting ready to start a family and that played a role as well."They made a really great pitch would've been really hard for me to say no"
NJ gave up @100 less than the CBJ so he can certainly fit and help improve what we did last year. He can't possibly make it worse. They gave up about 80-100 goals more than a legit team would have allowed. No single player that ever lived fixes that mess alone. They are doing the right thing by trying to improve some at a bunch of spots. That and a new coach and a new system gives some hope.
NJ really couldn't afford him. It was pretty destined he was going to leave due to a glut of defensemen and the need to sign new contracts for Meier and Bratt. They also only have 5 of their forwards under contract for next season so they have A LOT of people to sign with the 34 million CapFriendly says they have available.Im not so sure about that. I guess we now found out why the New Jersey fans sincerely wished him well and seemed to like him a lot on a personal level. Good stuff, this is how you make an entrance!Svoboda and Tyler interviewing Severson.
...
Man he's got such a likeable personality, he's gonna fit into that locker room like a glove imo
I think of it more as part of the healing process. He wore #28 with New Jersey. The wounds might be too fresh for me to accept another 28
Tyler Wright is offended. He wore #28 with New Jersey. The wounds might be too fresh for me to accept another 28
In Columbus after Jarmo?Hope Jim Benning gets a GM job somewhere
I have given up trying to explain it on the mains. Its a never ending flow of hot takes that just ignore the previous 50 pagesI’ll catch up on this thread eventually when I get a few minutes, but for now.
Severson was the Devils #1 D four years in a row until last season when he was their #2. Provorov has been the Flyers #1 D seven years in a row. They’re among the top 20 defensemen in total icetime over the last 6-7 years.
We aren’t expecting either of them to play that role. The frustrations you see from both of those fan bases are because they weren’t great #1s. They should be great 2s and 3s.
This will have a transformative effect on the entire team and can spend the time to develop our top prospects properly.
What are Columbus doing signing veteran defencemen for their Swiss cheese D core? They just had a terrible season, so therefore they must focus on drafting Celebrini, Misa and McKenna. It's so simple.I have given up trying to explain it on the mains. Its a never ending flow of hot takes that just ignore the previous 50 pages
There is one Devils fan/poster there who has had an irrational hatred of the CBJ for as long as I’ve been on these boards (20+ years). There must be some personal issue there to have that white hot of a rage for such a non-offensive team as us. Otherwise, I think it’s just the usual East Coast/NYC/NJ disdain for all things Midwest.Tangential, but was reading the thread on NJD board for more insight on Severson and a lot of them seem to really hate CBJ. Anyone know why? Is it just due to Gaudreau? Obviously we’re in the same division, but we’re not rivals / have never really battled for a playoff spot or played against each other in the playoffs.
I don’t mind it (it’s better to be hated than pitied/thought of indifferently), I just find it odd.
