Im not so sure about that. A cursory look to me makes me think the teams that might want Severson dont have the cap space for Severson while the teams with the cap space (Anaheim, Chicago, etc.) aren’t ready to make such a move. NJ is actually a team that is on the rise and could afford him, and they obviously weren’t willing to match our offer. If you have an example of a team that would compete with us and have the cap space, please share it.
They may not have the cap space now, but they could have space in 22 days when free agency opens. A lot can change in 22 days. Look at how the CBJ blue line has changed in just 72 hours.

People love to wonder how long Columbus can be bad and Jarmo still have a job and when they make moves to improve/take steps to improve those same people go what the hell is Columbus doing adding players when they were the 2nd worst team in the league!

Can’t wait for the apology tour in 2 years time

Thats a good point. Rushing the kids vs rushing the rebuild (which I dont think this is). Creating competition is a good thing. 8 is a lot of years but there are options to get out of the end of that deal
This. Acquiring Severson also gives us more depth when injuries hit the D.

Dom Lefvneirchsfcjsrhbkrnfrsnsv@^%@ just loves to sh*t on everything Columbus does with metrics no matter how slanted they are

They gave up about 80-100 goals more than a legit team would have allowed. No single player that ever lived fixes that mess alone. They are doing the right thing by trying to improve some at a bunch of spots. That and a new coach and a new system gives some hope.

Svoboda and Tyler interviewing Severson.

"They made a really great pitch would've been really hard for me to say no"
Sounds like they are getting ready to start a family and that played a role as well.

Columbus Blue Jackets... The family man's team

Knows KJ, Sillinger and Nash

Got his dog from Ohio

Big baseball guy .

Man he's got such a likeable personality, he's gonna fit into that locker room like a glove imo

NJ gave up @100 less than the CBJ so he can certainly fit and help improve what we did last year. He can't possibly make it worse.

Also few other points.

Remember when they hired Babcock and everyone went Gaudreau must hate his life now.

I wonder if they still think he hates his lifer after seeing them add Provorov& Severson on top of Babcock.

My guess would be that he’s smiling.

And another point. Everyone points out Columbus isn’t the most desired location for players and they have to overpay to get them sign.
Well how do you change that view? By winning, by icing a better roster.

NJ really couldn't afford him. It was pretty destined he was going to leave due to a glut of defensemen and the need to sign new contracts for Meier and Bratt. They also only have 5 of their forwards under contract for next season so they have A LOT of people to sign with the 34 million CapFriendly says they have available.

Meier and Bratt are looking for big money. They might want to resign Graves before free agency. They might have some eyes on some big moves of their own to help get farther next season. In any event, their blue line is getting crowded with Luke Hughes and probably Simon Nemec coming next year. They COULD have probably found a way to match our offer but priorities for them are different.

While I'm not planning to take the time to research every other team, I'm sure there are plenty of other teams who would find a way to add a defenseman. Now is the season for teams to try and play music chairs to get what they want. We'll be trying to do it ourselves with all the extra players we need to clear out.

I guess we now found out why the New Jersey fans sincerely wished him well and seemed to like him a lot on a personal level. Good stuff, this is how you make an entrance!

I’ll catch up on this thread eventually when I get a few minutes, but for now.

Severson was the Devils #1 D four years in a row until last season when he was their #2. Provorov has been the Flyers #1 D seven years in a row. They’re among the top 20 defensemen in total icetime over the last 6-7 years.

We aren’t expecting either of them to play that role. The frustrations you see from both of those fan bases are because they weren’t great #1s. They should be great 2s and 3s.

This will have a transformative effect on the entire team and can spend the time to develop our top prospects properly.

I have given up trying to explain it on the mains. Its a never ending flow of hot takes that just ignore the previous 50 pages

What are Columbus doing signing veteran defencemen for their Swiss cheese D core? They just had a terrible season, so therefore they must focus on drafting Celebrini, Misa and McKenna. It's so simple.

Personally, I think this signing is easily a net positive for the team.

People really think Columbus is/was as bad as their standings showed and cant make massive improvements next year really.

As the NHL’s latest article shows Columbus had to use 47 different players last year with 11 players making their debut.
They had a franchise record 563 man games lost to injury.

Going from Larsen to Babcock on it’s own can them take a massive jump.
See Trots affect with NYI’s average roster

Werenski is replacing Gavrikov as the 1D
Severson is replacing Peeke as the 1RD
Provorov is replacing AHL player as the 2LD

& people think they are an expected bottom5 team because they finished 31st last year?

That list doesn’t even have anyone else they’ll be adding or the jump Johnson/Texier/Voronkov/Marchenko can make

Tangential, but was reading the thread on NJD board for more insight on Severson and a lot of them seem to really hate CBJ. Anyone know why? Is it just due to Gaudreau? Obviously we’re in the same division, but we’re not rivals / have never really battled for a playoff spot or played against each other in the playoffs.

I don’t mind it (it’s better to be hated than pitied/thought of indifferently), I just find it odd.

Rick Nash was a big part of him wanting to come here

Knows what it's like to go through the rebuild and what it's like to come out on the other side and believes Columbus is about to do the same

Already chirping at Hedger
"You still on dial-up?!?"

Talking to Z already

Always wanted a long term deal where they could start a family. Columbus popped up as a possibility and they loved everything they heard about the city.

Didn't really have any talks about extending with Jersey, knew from the exit interviews they weren't bringing him back because they couldn't afford him.

Not gonna worry about coaching, he doesn't have any say, whoever they hire he knows that if he's taking care of his game then it doesn't matter they'll get along

No timeline when he's gonna get to town.

Jarmo:
Felt like they needed to strengthen the top 4 to take next step.

Went for provorov because they didn't want to lose out on getting help on D in the UFA market

Same for Severson.

Lots of opportunities in top 6

Great to have internal competition

Really important not to rush prospect's, new guys will be great partners moving forward.

Still believes in guys like Boqvist and Bean. Defense is gonna be a strength moving forward, top 4 should be good on both ends and munch minutes.

Severson is effective w/o being flashy. Good positioning and reads + size and physicality, also a good leader in the room.

Wanted to be aggressive to get the jump on UFA and believes Severson will be able to play well into his 30s

Monitoring cap space is important not only now but into the far future "7 years ahead"

Good defense makes good goaltenders.

Structure plays a big role, new coach will help take care of that(said very nonchalantly)

Exploring all options to make sure everyone fits on the roster(when asked about how many dmen we had) but reemphasized you can never have too many dmen, but still looking to see how they can make the team better.

Tough competition on July 1. Wanted to get ahead of everyone else. Worth the price of a 3rd rounder.

Real work begins when the guys get on the ice. Huge off-season for a lot of guys

Been watching the guys with 1 yr left all season. Severson was the #1 target. Did a deep dive into all aspects, on ice/off ice, leadership, character, etc. Leaned on Rick Nash from his previous experiences with him a little bit

Both Provorov and Severson can be impact guys. NJD reporter mentioned that we're getting a great one in Severson.

There is one Devils fan/poster there who has had an irrational hatred of the CBJ for as long as I’ve been on these boards (20+ years). There must be some personal issue there to have that white hot of a rage for such a non-offensive team as us. Otherwise, I think it’s just the usual East Coast/NYC/NJ disdain for all things Midwest.
