a couple things:

first, the 8-year term isn't a big deal at all given that the cap is about to go up and the last two years have zero bonuses (this has been said a few times in here but it bears repeating)

second, the single biggest micro issue for the jackets last year (imo) was the complete inability to make the first pass to exit the zone. the image of andrew peeke standing behind the net and scanning the ice for half of his shift only to throw a puck into traffic and turn it over 15 times a game is burned into my brain.

the guy they just got has what might be the best first pass in the entire league.

It’s about ceiling. As constructed, this team’s ceiling is not very high.

They need more Johnson, Jiricek, Carlsson types. Looks like we won’t be getting any more of them anytime soon.

They don’t need more of them.

They have 2 potential 1C and 2 potential 1D’s.
Enough is enough, otherwise you are looking at Buffalo/Edmonton/Detroit like dark years.

Severson

Voronkov
Dumais

They have a Cup contending ceiling no doubt

Seriously. If this removes having to watch Andrew Peeke for 20 mins a night it can't be that bad.

You may be right about the ceiling but that’s dependent on three “ifs” - and I hate playing the if game. These ifs are:

- If Carlsson/Fantilli is the real deal and KJ proves to be a top 6 center
- If Babcock establishes a responsible structure that improves the GAA
- If we solve the issues in net

If those ifs are positive, then I think the ceiling is high. I’m confident on the first two; the “net if“ is a huge if.

If the ceiling for one of the youngest teams in the league is not very high, then you also don’t believe in the long term outlook either.

(Which is fine, but clearly jarmo doesn’t agree. And I don’t either)

Devils fan.

I absolutely love Severson, I think he’s tremendous despite the shit he’s taken from some of our fan base.

Arguably our best overall defenseman last year, the advanced stats are not wrong on him.

Despite his reputation as an offense guy, he’s a two way force that really excels playing next to another puck mover.

Enjoy, I will cheer loudly when he comes to our building.

This seems to be the way contending teams have built their blue lines

Werenski 6'2 213lbs
Provorov 6'1 201lbs
Jiricek 6'3 190lbs? But growing
Severson 6'2 205lbs.

Not a ton of nasty but some and good size

Aha! What a coincidence that Pierre Lebrun wrote about this today :)

Yep, and he fits Babcock's system perfectly. As does Provorov.

As others have pointed out, this defense is already better than any defense he had in Toronto. Now if they can just stay healthy.

And on that note, I also appreciate that Provorov and Severson have both been extremely durable throughout their careers. That's a good not too mentioned aspect of these moves. If they come here and suddenly start getting hurt a lot, then I'm going to start wondering wtf the team trainers are doing.

As a fan of both teams this deal really works for us. Severson just didn't have a future in NJ. We talk about our future D here but NJ has Luke Hughes and Simon Nemec didn't even get a sniff of NHL time last year because of the D depth. Upcoming D is not a NJ concern right now.

He'll be solid and be given an opportunity to be a bigger contributor here. His size and game seems ideal for what Babcock might want to do. I'm assuming this leave room for NJ to extend Ryan Graves if they would like but if he hits UFA he could still be a good addition here if Jarmo is just blowing up the D and completely rebuilding it.

What's up with the "Blue Jackets were the only club granted permission by New Jersey to speak with Severson"? Surely New Jersey would want a bit of a bidding war and talk to multiple suitors?
If teams aren't sure they can sign and trade, they won't pay assets for access. The exclusivity is why Jarmo paid a 3rd, otherwise teams might as well wait for him to hit UFA.

These guys will get the money from everywhere.

Top4 RD’s are really wanted in this league
yeah someone phrased it as "we basically traded bjorkstrand for severson" and given our wing depth that's still a steal for the jackets.

similar ages, similar aav. i think severson is a better player at his position than bjorkstrand is, while playing a far more valuable position that also happens to be a far bigger need for the team.

I don't think it should be framed that way. Jarmo could've retained Bjork and still acquired Severson (and not used the foregone Bjork cap on Gudbranson).

Not like having the pick specifically used in this trade is the only thing that made the trade possible.

But the reason they ended up trading Bjorkstrand was landing Gaudreau
