I was following him last year, I think he was even scratched for a few games, the Devils fans comments weren’t too pretty, so I’m a bit concerned

He's a good D man. He's not a first pairing guy, but he's good. It's just that the mistakes he makes are massive and costly when they do happen. If you expect him to be a first pair guy I think you will be a bit disappointed. But if you are ok with a solid 3/4, you will be happy with him.

I think a lot of the ire we have for Sevo comes from the fact that our defense is actually pretty damn good these days, and we have Hughes and Nemec basically ready to enter the league.

Jarmo didnt want to risk coming up empty handed in FA and I dont blame him. 3rd seems a bit high to trade for his rights but I guess a sign and trade is worth it. The player is obviously worth more than a 3rd.
I wonder what this means for Boqvist.
Yeah, I think it’s a bit higher of a pick because it wasn’t just his “rights”, he was actually signed. Normally if it’s just the right to negotiate early, it’ll be a late round and/or conditional pick. But I’m fine with a mid-3rd for him signed.

As it seems now, he likely slots next to Werenski in the first pair and Werenski is also not a defense first guy, so I don’t know…

Yes, Jarmo also loves his “toughness and leadership”, so he’s definitely staying, I just hope he doesn’t get to play more than 10 min a night

Well that I can definitely get behind. He's no doubt an expensive tough guy that needs limited minutes. Will be interesting to see how Babcock handles him -- next Commodore?

I know plenty will dislike this move but guess what this does?

You don’t have to worry about the blueline for the next 5 years.

Werenski
Jiricek
Provorov
Mateychuk
Severson
Svozil
Bean
Ceulemans

Now you can put all your focus on offense and net.
These moves created a lot of stability

It's a good pickup, but lot of question marks:

-Term of the contract is insane
-Again others mentioned but he's likely a 2nd pairing guy who is likely going to be on our first pairing, with another offensive first dman
-Finally I hope he wants to be here. He was looking at UFA in a few weeks. Again I don't think there is much of a chance that he pulls a Jeff Carter but there must have been a concern for us to give up a 3rd just to make sure we had him

I immediately looked at his PK/3 on 3 time and noticed he was 4th/5th in PK time, which isn’t that encouraging, even though NJ does seem to have a few above average DEFENSIVE defensemen.

The question really is how good he and Provorov can play DEFENSE. And, is Provorov (or Severson) happy to play on the PK regularly and with focusing on defense?? Because that’s what we need, playing alongside Werenski, or in general.

They may not be perfect for what we need, but, they look about as good as we could get, looking for a couple “mobile/two way defenseman”. Relevant to what you think of Severson playing “1st pairing”, 1 of them IS going to have to play alongside Werenski.

Severson being the RHD probably gets the edge or “1st look” next to Werenski, however, it almost seems like Provorov might be the better fit still.

Werenski-Provorov
Bean-Severson
Boqvist/Jiricek-Gudbranson/Blankenburg

Re your last point, this is different than Carter. Severson signed with the intention of joining CBJ. Carter did not: he signed with the intention of playing the contract with Philly.

I like the move. Seems like our own version of Weegar.

As someone said, this has to signal at least two of Boqvist, Peeke, Blankenburg, Gudbranson, and Bean are gone

I would have to think Boqvist and Peeke have the most value. I could see either one in a package for a forward.

I am still uneasy about the direction we’re going. It feels like we’re pushing our chips in a year too early. But this is what jarmo said he was going to do, so no real surprises.

I also think this makes it harder for Jiricek to make the team, and it’s no longer a lock which isn’t a bad thing.

Cap space is now getting pretty low. And we better be done trading draft picks (unless we acquire more)

Overall I like the move. Money is fine. Term is really bad, but that’s the cost for a UFA.

Well, that's what I think happens with Peeke, Bean and at least one bottom line forward.

I think we could have waited a month and saved the third round pick. I also think 7 x $6.2 million would have been his best offer in free agency given most team’s cap issues and we would‘t have the 8th year on the contract.

I don’t mind adding Severson, but I think this is now the worst contract on the team and it hasn’t officially started yet.

Also, I think we have just shortened our window if we ever have a window.

Yeah, 7 x 6.25 with four years of full NTC probably would have been his best offer in free agency.

So we paid a 3rd rounder for the privilege of committing to pay him that much when he's 36.

All valid points. Most concerning to me is Jarmo rushing the process.
