So, here's my series of takes:

1) Initial report: meh, I thought, given the market, that we could've done better. And there are conditions? It's okaaaay...
2) Oh, those conditions could each individually turn each pick into a 1st? LOVE IT.
3) We retained? Mm. Okay, downgrade from great to good. (Not because of the cap effect, but because we've only got one retention left.)

Overall, B+.

I can understand that, but I still believe Gorton could’ve waited a bit. With stone being the last major piece to go see where the dust settles afterwards. Teams would be rushing to pick up a guy like zucc.

Just to play devils advocate, waiting can also bite you. The rumored return for a couple of weeks now has been a 2nd + another piece...they finally got a team that stepped up and at least offered conditional 1st's and they took it. If they declined and waited another day or two, and Dallas turns around and makes a play on another winger with those picks and the Zucc deal falls through, that leaves us with a potentially lesser return that was being offered elsewhere.

To add to what I said earlier-if Zucc re-signs then we get a 2020 first. That class is deep. Here’s to hoping Dallas turns into Ottawa. Make it to the ECF and then bottom out after re-signing him lmao. Again, smart but risky move by Gorts

It won’t be a first and a first. It’ll be a second and a third and it will get us nowhere

Let’s see the throw away for Hayes coming in

1. dismiss the possibility of a 2nd becoming a 1st with some luck for Dallas from now until May
2. dismiss the possibility of a 3rd becoming a 1st with Nill getting desperate and re-signing a potentially stellar Zuccarello in Dallas's top 6.
3. dismiss the possibility of a 2nd round pick and a 3rd round pick having an impact on our future
4. assume Hayes will net a fruit basket with inedible pine cone decorations

I try to be optimistic in the inevitable sea of pessimism around here pre-deadline. Still, Dallas isn't exactly a hot bed for free agency despite the tax advantages and deep-pocketed ownership. They've been lousy at the draft table as well. Cashing in what they hope to be a late 1st round pick to keep a guy that performs well for them isn't that much of a stretch.

One other optimistic way of viewing this is that Dallas really likes Zuccarello, was concerned he would flee back to NY, and wanted to hedge against that by adjusting the benefits and costs of the deal accordingly.

One wonders if the market for Zucc was softened by teams wanting the players for several years being concerned about his previous NY discount.

I’m talking about making this team better in the future and not resigning our 31 yr old UFAs to tread more water than we have been.

TURN THE DAMN PAGE

A team with an additional 2nd and 3rd pick in the future + Zuccarello isn't better than we are right now without him? I'd like to hear the argument to be made for that. He'd be the 2nd best winger on the team as soon as he signed.

Change for the sake of change isn't necessarily a positive thing.

Zucc should have been dealt at last year’s deadline for a REAL return but since gorton can’t ever get anything done he missed his window and had to settle for this garbage deal. Dzingl brought back more. That’s a joke with Zucc’s resume.

I have zero faith in gorton making a good Hayes deal. We’re screwed.

You forgot to tell us how you're not biased in any way against Groton too.

What if they couldn't hammer out a deal in time but intend to resign Zucc this off season?
A 2019 2nd and 2020 3rd and a resigned Zucc to 3-4 years would make Gorton look pretty sharp.
I'm spitballing here folks... trying to think about this trade from every angle.

Certainly a reasonable take and point to consider. He could be looking to cash in as a free agent, but playing in a state with no income tax certainly goes a long way for that.

I'll feel a lot better about my theory if Brassard ends up in Dallas before 3PM Monday, though Nill said they're done. Cross my fingers for a signing I guess.

Or Zucc just ends up back in NY and the Rangers do.. whatever the hell it is they do.

Live threads for stuff like this is very annoying.

Not outraged by the trade but it's very underwhelming.
Also kind of surprised that there wasn't a team out there who would offer up two 2nds with some conditions (or similar) to trump Dallas

rumoured return for weeks was 2nd and a prospect (lvl of prospect never leaked).

Rangers get a conditional 2nd and a conditional 3rd. More or less the established value and this bored is up in arms.

Decent trade if it stays status quo. Grand slam if conditions met.

This trade shows that even though zucc was fire the last couple months teams were nervous about the start of the yr and a 1st was never on the table for him.

Smart post. I like this angle/view on the trade.

Gonna be rooting hard for Zucc. Never liked Dallas. Not a sexy landing spot for him.

They won’t make it out of the first round.

It would however be amazing if Zucc went BrassGod and got them there and gave us whiny fans a 1st rounder.

Eh I don’t love it but it’s not impossible Dallas wins two rounds - they have elite top talent.

If this was the best deal, which I assume it was, it is what it is. People whining about this are assuming someone else offered their dream deal and Gorton just turned it down.

I don't get that logic. Never did. Sure we can surmise that the market was what it was and this is the best offer Gorton could get, but that's assuming you have the same value system as Gorton. Maybe another team offered a prospect that you think has a chance to be a star, but Gorton doesn't.

I don’t want our 2nd best winger to be 32... it doesn’t line up with the rebuild.

I want our second best to be a kid... and before ANYONE starts with the wolves and lack of vets HANK is f***ing here and he’s the damn Captain no matter what the letters or lack of say on his jersey.

Bringing Zucc back so we can pick 8-12 again is horrific

The deadline is in 2 days. After that we can't retain on anyone else this year and the Zucc retention goes away at the end of the season. Hard to downgrade the deal based on retention unless you thought we would trade for more than 1 other retention deal in the next 48 hours which seems quite unlikely.

A Norwegian setting up shop in Dallas Texas for the rest of his career on his lifetime contract for age 31-37 just seems unlikely. He has been emotionally divorced from the Rangers for a little over a year now. Maybe his loyal trait will see him engage in earnest negotiation with his new team over the next couple of months.

Here's another way to look at it:

30% of retaining Zucc's salary got us a 3rd rounder. So if you want to take another look at it, it's basically Zucc for a conditional late first.
