It won’t be a first and a first. It’ll be a second and a third and it will get us nowhere

Let’s see the throw away for Hayes coming in

Getting less than some of us want for one players doesn't necessarily translate into less for another.

Certainly less than we maybe wanted for McDonagh didn't change anything about the Nash or Grabner deals.

boy sure glad we let him help ruin the tank for 3/4 of the season for this return. i look forward to the goalie we pick in the 2nd round

I can’t imagine being outraged about this return.
For real. We were told for weeks “2nd and a prospect” and now we get a 2nd and a 3rd (before considering conditional stuff) which is my idea of “ok we’ll take the second but we don’t like any of your prospects so give us a 3rd instead).

Deal is fine.

Honestly don’t like the return but at least they didn’t make this guy wait until 3pm on Monday

I get a feeling Gorts wanted this deal out of the way. The offer from Dallas was the best and he decided to pull the trigger. I guess he has bigger fishes to fry on sunday/monday. Kreider/Shatty/Hayes? And McQ of course.

Hypothetically speaking, let's say Zucc is interested in returning to Dallas, but the Stars enter a bidding war with another team or two, which is entirely plausible. You don't think it's going to creep into Nill's mind that he would have to give up a FIRST ROUNDER to re-sign Zucc?
Zuc needs to atleast be an above PPG player and have a signicant impact. If he’s average and they get bounced out in the first round yeah no way he’s back in Dallas. I can see us resigning him which means free draft picks

I'm fine with 2+3 instead of 2+2 for the gambling upside. I mean, obviously Gorton is taking less for a chance at getting top end talent. Not sure how else we're suppose to accomplish the "find top end talent" task in this rebuild without taking some chances in trade equity or getting lucky in the draft lottery.

Also can't take away from the fact that the outrage is stemming from our love for Zucc. Very little but an overpayment would have been praised. The market CLEARLY wasn't as hot for Zucc as we wanted it to be.

Of course it is, which is why it won't happen. It was a throwaway condition.

Total fail by Gorton. How can you get that pathetic return? you just got played with those conditions. Winning 2 rounds to 7th team that is very unlikely if you wanted to give those conditions should have traded him to a better team.

Now Stars can't even use those 1st round picks to make themselves better which means they won't be able to get much more than Zucc to make a run.

So we potentially end up with three first round picks or three/four second round picks this year. We just need Dallas to get swept in the WCF and Tampa win the cup. Aye I’m all for the assets worse case scenerio.

This is what happens when a player is overrated. He's been our 2ndor 3rd best forward for a few years but the aftermath of this move is more a commentary on how lackluster the team is and less that Gorton did poorly... he's a 2nd line player.

Dzingel IMO got a much better return.

I'm not crazy about the conditions. Dallas will probably make the playoffs but they're a big reach IMO to get past two rounds. I mean if they do--that's great. As for Zuccarello re-signing with them---you know if I'm Jim Nill I'm kind of already thinking that ain't going to happen. Zucc is a good player and all but he's 32 next year. Would anybody here give up a first rounder to give Zucc a 5 year and say $30-35 million contract? I'll take it for granted right now and answer for practically everyone. No you wouldn't.

That 3rd to a 1st--I'm calling bullshit on that right now. That 3rd is going to be a 3rd.

It could be, but it strikes me as as relatively optimistic thinking.

I try to be optimistic in the inevitable sea of pessimism around here pre-deadline. Still, Dallas isn't exactly a hot bed for free agency despite the tax advantages and deep-pocketed ownership. They've been lousy at the draft table as well. Cashing in what they hope to be a late 1st round pick to keep a guy that performs well for them isn't that much of a stretch.
