Confirmed Trade: [DAL/CAR] Mikko Rantanen (signs 8 years, $12M AAV) for Logan Stankoven, c. 2026 1st round, c. 2028 1st round, 2026 3rd round, 2027 3rd round

I consider it highly unlikely that the Stars and GMJN2.0 will give Rantanen the kind of money it seems like he's wanting without first having an extension in place for Johnston, and rightly so. Any contract has to fit into the Stars' cap structure, where Hintz and Heiskanen (and eventually Johnston) are the new benchmarks. He's a phenomenal player, but this isn't the Avs. I suppose this is why he hasn't been able to work out an extension with two, and apparently three, teams up to this point.

f***, it fell through?

I’m assuming he really just wants to go to free agency at this point, and I don’t blame him. He was surprised to be traded, the Carolina tries to rush him to sign, then they try and get him to agree to a deal with Dallas- it’s a lot, figuring out your future, and he probably just wants to play good hockey right now.

Hard to blame Rantanen.

You don’t just decide the next 7-8 years of your life just cause someone is pressuring you. Especially in a place he hasn’t even played yet.

They probably have to blow him completely out of the water with their offer.

I mean... if he goes to a new team in free agency, he'd also have not played there and he's probably signed for 8 years. But yeah, he earned to right to be a free agent, so he shouldn't be pressured to make a decision that affects the next 8 years of his and his family's life just to do a favor for Carolina. Carolina messed up that trade, maybe they though Rantanen was RFA :sarcasm:

Only Winnipeg and NJ have less GA/GP
What team have better championship caliber D then?
I guess my issue is more that Nill didn't go after a better player than Ceci to bolster the #4 spot or 3rd pair (or safeguard against injuries), but there's always acquisition cost to consider. The GA/GP is great in part because DeBoer-coached teams always have defensive buy-in from their forwards, and that's a credit to both the staff and the players. Assuming Heiskanen is back to 100% by playoffs they can always just play the top 2 pairs 30 minutes a night.

What does this mean?

The Avs chose not to give him what he wants and traded him, so what exactly are you suggesting?

Then Dallas isn’t a serious team and serious about winning

Hintz/Heiskanen contracts mean zero today on the market

To me it seems that Rantanen both wants to go UFA, but also does not want to get traded from Carolina. Rantanen is probably angry at Carolina for ruining his plan of hard balling but ultimately signing with the Avs, but at the same time Carolina is a good team where he has a realistic chance of winning the cup again so he does not want to get traded to a worse team that expects him to sign with them.

Why his camp doesn't just broadcast that his plan is to go UFA in July - in other words, don't bother asking him to sign an extension today - seems to suggest he is willing to sign with a team now, but what that list of teams looks like is anyone's guess.

My guess is that he'll get dealt today with no extension and go to market July 1.

every minute that passes rantenen’s camp will become more desperate to sign.

Really tight window of time for high stakes decisions.
It isnt really.

He can stay with Carolina, or his new team and then have that team allow others to talk to him, court him then and if he makes a decision, that team can trade him with an 8th year and get a little bit back, like a 2nd, which isn't much, but they can still get some back. He gets more with an 8th year, the other team acquiring him gets a lower aav..

If he signs a deal today he’s worth 100 million dollars.

If he gets a concussion or knee on knee hit playing for a team he doesn’t care about with no deal he’s worth way less than 100 million dollars.

He wants to sign today desperately. Nobody wants to enter the playoffs without a deal. Most certainly not people pending deals that are 100 million dollars who just got shipped to a team weeks ago.
