every minute that passes rantenen’s camp will become more desperate to sign.

Really tight window of time for high stakes decisions.
Why is the pressure on Rantanen to sign? Maybe choosing where to play and live is more important to him than the difference between 95 million and 105 million?
A deal with Dallas is far more likely what’s best for the Canes in what they get back than it is what Rantanen prefers.

If he signs a deal today he’s worth 100 million dollars.

If he gets a concussion or knee on knee hit playing for a team he doesn’t care about with no deal he’s worth way less than 100 million dollars.

He wants to sign today desperately. Nobody wants to enter the playoffs without a deal. Most certainly not people pending deals that are 100 million dollars who just got shipped to a team weeks ago.
He could get hurt tmrw for the rest of the season and he will still be the top UFA of the offseason and still get his 13-14 mill a year contract.

Rantanen has nothing to lose at all and can take as long as he wants to make a decision

Seems like he wants to squeeze every penny from the new deal. If he goes UFA, signing for 7 instead of 8 years will make that a bit harder.

Then he can mail it in, if he wishes to.

I suppose he could sit and sulk in Raleigh until 7/1 and cost himself $20M in the process. Status quo isn't helping anybody.
What makes you think he is sulking? Carolina is cup contender this year, maybe he just does not want to leave? I hear he got an apartment recently in Raleigh too. I see no reason why he would accept a trade and sign anywhere except maybe Colorado.

You've never heard of insurance have you
Are you aware of the cost of a 100 million policy for a contact sport athlete? Ya think a firm would take that on for less than 5? 10? NHL injury risk seems extremely high.

What number is more?

Rantanen’s take home pay for this season year

Or

A policy to guarantee him 100 million dollars, or the difference between the new reality and that number, in the event he’s injured in the playoffs and cannot contribute in the manner he currently can. You think people are going to take this risk for a few hundred k? He’s got no deal rn. It’s full exposure. Is Rantanen paid if the league shuts down due to global conflict? Natural disaster?

So your rebuttal is that the dude would pretty much not get paid this year, or at best give up a non trivial amount of his pay: that’s the solution that I’ve never heard of? Who did you think would have to pay for the insurance? The nhl?

Rantanen’s gonna be that desperate to sign today. That’s the stars calculus. Pay off insurance or sign in Carolina or take the stars last and best offer. Y’all act like these choices don’t have real life pros and cons, costs, and that people are weighing those things to make decisions. Like they’ll just causally high five a bro and get insurance free and it’s not some complex option that has costs that make it less than ideal.

I guess Carolina has to decide if they think he is detrimental to the team and if that’s the case, just cut bait and get back what you can

He wants to sign today desperately.

Then he's a Dallas Star or a Hurricane already right?

I get that it makes sense to get a deal done now in case of injuries, etc. but LOTS of players run that risk and wait until the season is over before extending. Marner is apparently doing that right now in Toronto, just for one.

How do we know yet?

By the sound of it Carolina has given very little time for teams to get a deal done with Rantanen

You expect a 95-105M deal to be done within an hour?

Know what? That he wants as much money as possible? See what happened in Colorado.

How so? He just wants to test UFA. It’s not his fault that Carolina traded for him expecting him to be willing to sign now.

Are all players who want to test UFA markets primadonnas, or is it just the Finns?
Then just be transparent about it. Now its known he doesn’t want to be in Carolina where he most likely packs it in for the season. Hes been offered more than hes worth.

Maybe Wyatt Johnson because he won't extend?

The issue with Johnston is they are offering just over 8 million on a. 8 year deal which isn't a lot when the cap is going up by 10 million over the next few years.

All signs point to Johnston wanting to stay in Dallas, they just gotta make the numbers work.

I also dont think that they'd trade him for Rantanen.

All this hype and pressure is good for Carolina. If they're willing to give him 13m aav, and these negotiations with Dallas is legit info and not some rumor, Mikko and his agent will see that if he is going after big money, there aren't many options but some bottom15 teams. If he wants to be a part of competitive team, Carolina is maybe the only choice with enough cap space. If he wants to become a Dallas star, he will have to settle for under 11m I think.

This is looking like a nightmare scenario for the Canes if he doesn't get traded to Dallas and he sulks and plays poorly on Carolina and then leaves in UFA.

The Canes pretty much have to win the Cup to salvage this situation at this point.
