Like Armia, he was seen as a disapointment by the Jets because he was a high draft pick and they were hoping he was going to be a first or second liner, well Montréal saw him as a grinder with size and he has been useful to us for 3 seasons before slowing down. With Dadonov’s retention and Gurianov joining the Habs, they now have about 4M left under the cap for TDL. Maybe as high as 6.5M, considering Slafkovski, Caufield and Xhekaj are done for the season and could thus be LTIRed.

But even at 6.5M, that’s basically just enough to reactivate Monahan if he returns healthy.

If the Habs make further moves this week, it thus entails either fetching a conditional pick for Monahan (as an insurance policy or LTIR asset) - or, more likely, Gallagher will have been officially shut down for the year.

The more I think about it, the more I like it. It's a no lose situation. If this kid doesn't work out - fine. Dadonov was pure trash and wasn't returning. And now we get something to watch that isn't the same crap we've had all year long. No risk with potential reward.

Dadanov likely would have returned a 4th, maybe a 3rd at most.

Good trade. They can try him on the top-6 in the last 20 games, have a close look at him, then decide what to do. They will have the cap space to qualify him if they think he showed enough. Better to have that than a 5th round pick. Nishushkin bloomed at 26 with Colorado, another high pick, big Russians winger, the Stars gave up on. Good gamble.
