D. Toews vs Q. Hughes

So according to Avs fans:

MacKinnon is a top 3 player in the world
But also Makar is better than MacKinnon
But also Toews is better than Makar
Also Toews is a top 10 defenceman in the league
Also Girard is a #1 defenceman and better than Hughes
And also Rantanen is a top 10 player in the league

Some of the Avs fans here are very questionable. I won't judge the entire Avs fanbase by them though. There are a ton of great fans. And the team is way too fun to watch on top of that.

Let me address some of them:
The Mack we’ve seen so far this year isn’t a top 3 player. But lately he is looking like his old self while Makar has been more consistent this year less brain dead plays compared to Mack. I see Toews being better than Makar some nights but overall Makar has been the better he creates so many chances while being good defensively. Toews is just excellent defense knows how to play with his stick and use his body to separate puck carrier (still think he’s underrated a little bit) he doesn’t create much offensively but he has good slapper from the point. LOL at Girard being a #1 dman feels bad that I thought this way once when Makar was in his rookie season I think earlier that year. We all suffer from little bias at some point right? Rantanen’s production has been outstanding since being in this league he has 1,14 PPG in the last 5 seasons I’m not saying he’s a top 10 player but it isn’t far fetched to say so IMO.

At 524 posts you obviously have a lot still to learn grasshopper.
One player plays on a bad team and has to carry the D and the other plays on an elite team with a great deal more support both offensively and defensively. Any stats that ignore the teams relative strengths and weaknesses are mostly worthless.
For example, Hughes is second on the Canucks in points at 31 points only behind JT Miller. The next closest D is Tyler Myers at 10 points so Hughes has 3 times as many points as the second closest defender.
Makar has more points per game than Toews and Girard is also elite offensively. The Avalanche also have star players in McKinnon, Rantanen and Kadri. The top goal scorer on the Canucks is Horvat who has 13 goals which would place him seventh in goal scoring on the Avalanche despite the fact that the Canucks have played more games.
There is no possible way to compare the offensive stats of the two players and say that Toews are better.
So there you go.

My point stands, why are you suggesting it isn't close?

He has proven he can play well in a highly offensive system (COL) and he can play well in a highly defensive system (NYI).

It's not an easy comparison because they're very different players. As an Avs fan I would rather have Toews, but only because we already have Makar AND Girard. Toews is just a little bit of a bigger, steadier defenseman while also still having great puck moving skills and offensive awareness.

It's probably more like...

Makar > Hughes > Girard

with Toews not really being directly comparable.

If we didn't have Makar, and we weren't pushing for a cup super hard for the next 3 seasons I would trade Toews for Hughes just to have that gamebreaking #1 PP QB potential somewhere. As is the Avs need Towes more. There's only one #1 PP unit to be on.

Vancouver reasonably wouldn't make that trade because they aren't pushing for a cup right now and Hughes is a young stud with huge potential.

I know it sounds crazy but there is no entity called "Avs fans". There are however different people with different opinions.
