Hughes. Not that close.
The Avalanche have a great D group but I think it’s become overrated, outside of Makar.
They are an elite group offensively but give up a ton of goals defensively. I know some of it is goaltending but that’s not the whole story.
You'd think after over 30k posts on a hockey forum you'd know more about the game. You're right. It's not close. Toews is much better right now. At almost all aspects of the game. Analytics, points, etc. Hughes could grow as a player sure, but what are these takes by Canuck fans right now? The proof is right in front of you.

At 524 posts you obviously have a lot still to learn grasshopper.
One player plays on a bad team and has to carry the D and the other plays on an elite team with a great deal more support both offensively and defensively. Any stats that ignore the teams relative strengths and weaknesses are mostly worthless.
For example, Hughes is second on the Canucks in points at 31 points only behind JT Miller. The next closest D is Tyler Myers at 10 points so Hughes has 3 times as many points as the second closest defender.
Makar has more points per game than Toews and Girard is also elite offensively. The Avalanche also have star players in McKinnon, Rantanen and Kadri. The top goal scorer on the Canucks is Horvat who has 13 goals which would place him seventh in goal scoring on the Avalanche despite the fact that the Canucks have played more games.
There is no possible way to compare the offensive stats of the two players and say that Toews are better.
So there you go.

He's on a Canadian team, and he's been overhyped to the point that Canucks fans couldn't possibly comprehend that he isn't a top 10 defenseman in the league. Toews is a top 10 defenseman.

Don't think Hughes will ever have a season as good as Toews is having. Truly two-way elite player. I think Girard is a better player than Hughes overall.

Toews is legit.

That was from before the season. You can see how high Hughes’ WAR was in his rookie year on the graph. He had a rough sophomore year, but he’s been better this year than as a rookie despite playing next to Luke Schenn and Tucker Poolman instead of Tanev. Both these guys are legit. One is in a much better situation though.

That was before this season. Curious to see what it looks like now. You should also know that the WAR model heavily favors players on good teams.

Yes it was before this season. Both good points, I don’t think it’s a coincidence Hughes struggled without Tanev. Toews has had better results although with much more capable parters. When separated from Makar, Toews hasn’t missed a beat and has been arguably better than Makar separated. The Hughes Twitter thread shows Hughes’ micro stats card which is impressive to say the least.

The team has given up the 10th most goals per game in the NHL. Obviously they could improve on that a lot.
Best defense is playing in the other end and defending well in your own end.
Might want to talk to Kuemper about that. He’s been until the last couple weeks(and he’s still been average) one of the 2/3 worst starting goalies in the NHL this year.

Quinn Hughes is doing what he's doing without a very good team. Also Devon Toews didnt produce like this in NY

I dont think Toews is so much better defensively it negates the gap in offense and transition

Nobody produces in New York. Toews has been better than Makar defensively when they have been separated, whether those results are a fluke or not is yet to be determined. He also puts up about the same amount of even strength points as Makar. Overall, your argument is sound though.

So according to Avs fans:

MacKinnon is a top 3 player in the world
But also Makar is better than MacKinnon
But also Toews is better than Makar
Also Toews is a top 10 defenceman in the league
Also Girard is a #1 defenceman and better than Hughes
And also Rantanen is a top 10 player in the league

Some of the Avs fans here are very questionable. I won't judge the entire Avs fanbase by them though. There are a ton of great fans. And the team is way too fun to watch on top of that.

Still not nearly as annoying as Vancouver fans. Or fans of any of the a Canadian franchises tbh…

Can’t stand em’

Especially Leafs and Oilers fans. The absolute worst.

wonder how many seasons it will take for the lazy to stop recycling takes from last year when it comes to Hughes. I cant even say they're lazy stat watchers, because even stat watchers could look at the most basic of +/- and points and see that Hughes is elite on both ends
