D Erik Brannstrom (2017, 15th, VGK - Traded to OTT)

I think Brannstrom has the potential to be a top 3 defensemen in this draft. He produces everywhere he has gone. Defense can be taught, the high level IQ and offensive smarts he possesses can't be taught.

He just needs to model his game after someone like Erik Karlsson. A dominant player offensively and a very sound defensive player who doesn't have to be overly physical to be effective in his own end.

I think Brannstrom has massive potential. His numbers actual blew me away as I wasn't expecting him to be so good offensively as he has been.

I'm eagerly waiting on his measurements from the combine. A half inch one way or the other could easily be the difference of him being available to Toronto at 17 or not.

I'm eager to se how he does/measures in too. However, I was watching his highlights and damn, he looks really good. He's produced at every single level he's played at. His offensive instincts and IQ can't be taught, luckily defense can be improved on by coaching.

He's a smaller defender but for how elusive and quick he is, it may not be as big of a problem.

Agreed. But if he's 5'9" as Pronman is reporting, that will hurt his draft position imo. Some team may get a steal in the 2nd.

So same size as Girard. And Girard was dynamic as hell and still went at 47 last year.

Maybe he's the next Kimmo Timonen... Short , Stocky, Skilled

He said he likes watching Ryan Ellis and Shayne Ghostisbehere, two similar sized guys he will likely have to model his game like. Brannstrom has age on his side, fortunately, to grow an inch or two and currently sits at 170lbs already.

He was listed at like 5'10" before, so not sure how this is groundbreaking news for anyone.

At 5'10" he was sure surefire 1st rounder. At 5'9" there is a strong possibility he drops out of the 1st round.

Makar on the other hand, was listed at 5'10" as well, but measured in at 5'11", I think his stock went up a lot today.

being 5'9 instead of 5'10 will hurt him a lot.

that said he's still a great prospect who's faced older competition throughout his hockey career so far (and excelled).

Why?

Thats not based on hockey.

And you might be right to an extent, but its a stupid approach, I think.

He is not going to drop out of the first round because he is 5'9" instead of 5'10". He is almost a 2018 draft eligible player, and is one of the youngest in this draft class. A couple inches one way or another doesn't/shouldn't dictate him dropping so drastically, and if so, a team in the second round will be laughing their ***** off.

I think it was always more likely he was a 2nd round pick and teams always knew he was 5'9".

But HF likes to hype skilled players, especially in a weak draft year like this year.

How every single person bumping this thread wasn't bumping the Sam Girard thread last year is beyond me...

Don't a lot of rankings have him in the first round, and in the 15-25 range? If so, HF isn't the only one hyping him. McKeen's for example had Brannstrom at 19.
