ICYMI: Earlier in the thread Habs fans, here are a few things I posted at near the WJC.

This was a sequence of events against Germany that I think is crazy, even looking back on it. He was on the ice for around 4 minutes straight before this clip, yet he still finds the energy to make these plays.

Then on one of the worst teams in WJC history, here is how his advanced meterics looked. Reminder, he did this on a team that scored 5 goals in the entire tournament.

Honestly, Hes had 1 draft and it's ANYONES guess how SLAF turns out. Lets give him the 3 years he signed for to see how things are coming along. This was year two for him.. We just drafted the BEST D in this class. We got NEWHOOK and dach for practically nothing but a chicken with his head cut off in romanov and a couple darts.
Slaf is not looking too good. Cooley was the better option.
As for Reinbacher, we missed the opportunity to get a game breaker, the 2nd best player in the draft most likely. Reinbacher would have to peak as a PPG solid D-man for this pick to make sense.

As for Newhook, this is a guy that has scored 30 pts in his last 2 seasons. We have PLENTY of those with the team.

Not looking to good how?

Playing 4th line with zero pp time he was heading to a 30pts season, not bad for an 18yo kid that's 6'4 240

If theres one thing we know is that big strong players take time to debelop. See Blake Wheeler

That game breaker might not even play in the league. That's all a bunch of ifs and maybes.

Exactly,

A lot overreacting,

Guy just had his first year with some up and down, only 18 but you’d be foolish to not see the potential here

As for Reinbacher, if you watch him all year, the potential is clearly there to be a no1 defenseman, will he reach it is to be seen but his selection fit what the Canadiens needed long term

This is ironic considering Reinbacher's projection is to be a Romanov level defenseman.

Where have you seen those projections? What I’ve read is he play similar to Seider which is a completely different than Romanov
Not similar in style and Reinbacher also had a much better draft season than Seider. It remains to be seen if Reinbacher will continue to develop the way Seider did though post draft. If he does, that's a scary thought.

Here some statistical comparisons from earlier in the thread:

Habs will live to regret not taking Michkov.

Not a knock of Reinbacher but man did they mess this pick up.
Reinbacher > Michkov

Leonard was the miss for Montreal

But Reinbacher is the best D in the draft and has top pairing upside

Reinbacher's going to be similar to Jake Sanderson. Very active and complete defenseman, gets overlooked because his game is complete. He plays with a lot of pace and moves the puck really well, spotting teammates. He's not shy of being physical. I think he's being undersold here.

I won't lie, I wanted Matvei Michkov for the last 2 years. One can be disappointed, but it is insanely stupid and ridiculous to be hating a young 18 years old prospect because he got picked instead of another player we wanted or had preference for.

David Reinbacher is an extreme talent that happens to also be playing in one of the most coveted positions in the game, which makes him a top prospect for the draft. The kid is so ecstatic and proud to be part of our organization, we should all support him and cheer him to succeed, because Goddamn, he's a workhorse with 2-way talent and great awareness in all 3 zones. This kid is dynamic and has soft hands and yet, plays perfect gap control and puck separation on his opponents. Not only that, his NL stats as an U18 defenseman is the best in their history, period.

Bienvenue à Montréal David, we are excited to see you become a cornerstone to this franchise!

It's being compared to the fantasy hype around Michkov that is making people down on reinbacher. If michkov becomes a consistent 100 point guy it doesn't matter how good reinbacher is. Likewise if michkov struggles to become something and reinbacher becomes an all around #1 shea Weber dman then Habs laugh in hindsight as franchise wise a top pairing RD is all we really need.

I wanted reinbacher with Florida's pick when it was still top 10 in December. Arizona were taking him at 6 if the Habs didn't at 5 for anyone wondering why we didn't trade down. Personally, I would have gambled on michkovs potential but I didn't get to interview him or test him so I'll reserve my judgement for a few years.

Just don't see this guy being any more than a decent top 4 D personally. Which is still pretty good but I don't think he was BPA @ #5.

Think Hughes got Seider brain and felt he needed to reach for the big dman. Great floor with this player so it's hard to call it a miss at this point.

Two different players filling up different needs. I would have picked Michkov, but not picking him up doesn't make Reinbacher's pick a bad one either. Montreal's defense was really bad last year, so adding up a good defenseman with size might help the team more than getting a winger down the road.

I think he's going to be a huge minute eater, playing against the opponent's top players but still putting up 40ish points per year. He's basically a better Guhle.

Easily the worst pick in the draft. Not that he won't be a good player, but he could have been had moving back for more assets.

Guhle-Rein top pair is going to be terrifying. As much as I wanted to see Michkov in MTL they are flush upfront with young talent they needed another stud on the back end. Congrats Montreal fans, I look forward to watching you guys in the coming years you're built right IMO.
