Austria starting to build a decent international roster. Even if some of these guys don't become NHLers they'll have some guys in top European leagues for depth.

1st round:
Marco Rossi
Marco Kasper
David Reinbacher

Other rounds:
Vincenz Rohrer 3rd
Thimo Nickl 4th
Benjamin Baumgartner 6th

All drafted since 2000 (or to be drafted). Not bad.

I've done a bit of research and unless I missed something (which may well be possible), among currently active NHL defenders, Dahlin really is the only one posting similar numbers at the highest level in Europe. Furthermore, keep in mind Reinbacher is actually a 2nd year pro. He played SL last season and was part of the team that got promoted.

Also, read this tweet to learn more about how hard it is to get playing time let alone score points as a draft eligible kid in the NL.

You can tell Austria has great kids programs. However, as long as those kids have to leave the country several years before draft eligibility I think they're always gonna lack depth and only the most dedicated and gifted are gonna find a spot elsewhere. If you watch their junior teams play at international tournaments they sometimes play very good periods if they ride their top skaters or get outstanding goaltending. Yet still they almost always fall apart towards the end because they just run out of gas. What Austria needs is a strong pro league at the level of Germany's or Slovakia's leagues making it possible for young kids to play in Austria at least until the draft if they wish to do so.

I’d be shocked if he doesn’t land to one of mtl or Arizona

Yeah it seems likely.. although I think Montreal goes Smith first.. while Arizona probably isn't as interested in Benson/Smith considering Keller and Cooley are already anchoring that offense. Very similar players to Smith and Benson.

Interesting 1h interview with Reinbacher. It's in Swiss German but here are the most interesting points:

- Reinbacher said he doesn't care much about up to 20 NHL scouts watching him in the building as he's focused on Kloten only.

- When asked about how it was to play against Connor Bedard, Reinbacher said that Bedard is just another kid enjoying hockey. He added that the best player he faced is Valtteri Filppula.

- If he had the choice, Reinbacher would like to get drafted by Nashville because he really wants to play with Roman Josi. Besides, he said he doesn't have a preferred team.

- Reinbacher said his focus is on getting better at defending in his own zone as well hitting the gym hard and getting bigger.

- Reinbacher said he thought about playing for Sarnia Sting after getting drafted but ultimately decided not to do it because he wanted to continue playing pro hockey which is faster compared to junior hockey. He feels like he can learn more playing with and versus pros and added that he's a "family guy" which made his decision to stay easier.

Best def prospect we ever had but enjoy the rest of our team haha.
Yet still he got largely ignored by the Austrian federation for years which was also a topic in the interview. Reinbacher said he doesn't really know why. He said he's a proud Austrian and loves to represent his country.

If I'm not mistaken I think the same thing to some extent also happened to the other Austrian top prospects. Maybe the federation doesn't want its prospects to play abroad? Still strange not to invite the best players available...especially as a smaller hockey country. That's unless they're just terrible at talent evaluation of course.

Our federation isnt the smartest all the time. Matthias Steiner won olympic weightlifting gold for germany, Marc Giradelli was skiing for luxembourg,...all after some sort of problem with our federations.
If i am not mistaken Thomas Pöck is still the only austrian defender who played in the NHL. We had 1 goalie with Reinhard Divis and a few forwards like Vanek, Grabner, Nödl, Raffl, Brandner and those new guys Rossi and Kasper

I would be wary of anyone that cites his "lack of high end tools" or "offensive potential" as reasons to not draft him this high. Its evident that anyone that has actually watched Reinbacher would not say these things. His shooting tools are a 10 out of 10 for a defenseman. His play making is a solid 6.5 +. His hands are a 7.

Reminds me a bit of Franson’s shot with that low half-clapper, gets through traffic and creates a juicy rebound off the pads consistently without much windup.

AZ would be my bet if the draft order finished how it is today based on standings:

CBJ- Bedard
CHI- Fantilli
ANH- Carlsson
SJS- Michkov
MTL- Smith
ARI- Reinbacher
PHI- Leonard
WAS- Yager
VAN- Moore
STL- Benson
DET- Dvorsky

How does he rank against the top half of the dmen in last year's draft? (I'm thinking Nemec, Jiricek, Korchincki, Mintyukov)
