It's too bad his ice time has been so limited. He does seem to be very competent defensively and we didn't get to see too much of that. He's a two-way guy with extreme offensive upside.

if they lose the gold medal game on the decision of him playing makar 10 minutes, that will be the main reason why Canada loss.

putting your most dynamic dman as the 7th dman, lolz.

I honestly don't know if I'm bummed or happy about this. Seeing Makar on the Olympic team would have been awesome, but him getting top pair minutes in UMass is probably more important for his development right now.

I can't image he would get enough playing time to make this a worthwhile experience. UMass is where he should play.

Pretty crazy to turn down an offer to represent your country in the Olympics if you ask me (even tho it ain’t the same without NHL talent). Development wise it could be a good thing, but I really doubt it would make that much of a difference that it would warrant to pass up on such a opportunity. That’s just me tho.

Ducharme gave him embarrassingly little ice time; he got on to the tournament all star team playing an average of like 7 minutes a game.

I’m interested to see how Ducharme = Hockey Canada, though...
I think he was benched a little because his defensive game isn't as good as the other dmen on the team. He's a great player don't get me wrong, but on his goals in the tournament he was given a lot of time and space. If he can get his shot of quicker, I see him as an nhl pp specialist.

Lol wut.

I cannot credit that you have seen him play in college or at the WJC (although the second was kinda hard to do) when you say that he is weak defensively or that he is a PP specialist at the next level. Kid is incredibly strong for his size, amazing skater, has an outstanding defensive stick, and is damn good positionally, although with his skating ability, you wouldn’t really know if he wasn’t.

Maybe, just maybe, the coach thought that he was NOT capable defensively as the other 5 D-men on Canada WJ team.

Was very impressed by him at the WJCs, he was really good despite limited minutes. Excellent offensive tools, and better all around game than I expected. I can certainly see the top pairing potential.

Yeah, it sucks when the puck is always in the offensive zone when Makar is on the ice. Better bench him for some of the guys who were struggling to make breakout passes.

Playing in the O-zone and playing in your own D-zone are two completely different areas. I'd take Karlsson in the O-zone 10/10 times if we had the f/o there, but I'd take Vlasic 10/10 times if we had the D-zone f/o.

Yeah, trying to argue that Bean was better than Makar in his own zone is an even worse excuse than that nonsensical 'multiple transitions' rant.
Mete, Timmins, Foote, and Fabro are better in their own end though...

I wonder how many experts who say his D game is poor actually saw the kid play in defensive situations. Classic case of "He's dynamic, so he must suck defensively" narrative, which quite honestly might be just the most insanely stupid fallacy ever on these boards.

Am I the only one who doesn't really understand why he refused to go in the Olympics? Different coach, different playstyle, perhaps different utilization of Makar? He would have had the chance to climb up from the 7th Dman in that team no doubt.

Very shocked he wouldnt go. Im curious to hear why he wouldnt. Even if he played as the 7th dman, who cares!!.. Heck even if he was in and out of the lineup. Very odd to me.

Playing Junior A in Alberta last season to becoming a Olympian this season would be quite the accomplishment

I must be missing something
