He’s been absolutely amazingly good! I did expect him to become a very good player, but now my expectations on him have really gone up sky high. If he still develops a lot (and I don’t really see why he wouldn’t), he could really easily become even the best defenceman in the whole NHL.

Goddamn the Avalanche is seriously looking like a future dynasty. And it might very well not have to be much into the future when the dynasty starts.

Don't you use that word mister. You will jinx our team on performing in the upcoming playoffs see TBL. I'm kidding though.

Alot of Avs fans knew what to expect on Makar maybe not the way he is playing right now. Clearly went over my expectations but everytime we told people that Makar will be that good or we were waiting him to step into the playoffs some laughed at us saying that a rookie won't step in and actually be a difference maker. Of course we never expected Makar to be a difference maker but we did expect him to play better than guys like Nemeth or Cole. Hell he is playing better than EJ and Barrie in some games but he still need to be more physical/strong that's where he is usually getting beat. Yesterday everytime he had the puck in the offensive zone he created something like real good chances no wonder why he had that assist in OT.

6 points in his first 9 games. 4 of those 6 are points on game winning goals.

I know the sample size is small but that’s a 55 point pace per 82 games. And he’s doing this in the playoffs.
Plus all of those points are at 5v5 and all but two are primary. Many of them are from getting a shot through on net and causing chaos. Just wait until he gets fully integrated into the offense where he can add to it with passing and scoring himself. Not to mention someday when the pp gets out of the gutter and/or he's on pp1.

I've always felt Makar had special talent and that it was the right call to insert him into the team as soon as possible. But there was no way to expect what he's been able to do. Really begs the question just how much of a difference he's made since his arrival.

I think he has definitely made a big difference in both series. Against Calgary the Av's still probably win the series without him, but he did score a game winner and assisted on another game winner so who knows.

Against San Jose he has been very dangerous generating many chances on his own and playing adequate defense. His mere presence makes the San Jose players give a bit more respect to the Avs and cannot cheat as much offensively and also spend more time defending as well. I believe if Cale was not playing then the Av's would already be eliminated by the Sharks, but of course this can't be proven.

His ability to make a quick stretch pass or carry the puck up ice quickly means a lot more than just being a threat to score. The opposition must hang back and defend which means there is a less likely chance that they can go on the attack themselves as they must hang back more.

On top of all that he is just so much fun to watch. I think he is one of the most exciting players to watch in the entire league right now. It is awesome that Bednar trusts him so much to allow him to jump right into the play and he can be found behind the oppositions net a couple times a game or more. Forwards are well aware and they cover for him well when he goes on the attack.

I whiffed big here. I didn't think he'd be more than average NHL'er when he was drafted, and I thought he had higher than usual bust potential.
At least you can admit it. And to be fair, I don’t think any scout, professional or otherwise, expected his current level of play as soon as he joined the NHL. He kind of took everyone by surprise, even the most hardcore of Avs homers.

Yea at least you got the balls to admit it. Was a high risk high reward player when he was drafted. Not many people can say they expected this type of progression the day he was drafted though. What a player

In fairness he did have higher than usual bust potential, being from tier 2 junior and heading to a Umass for college hockey, not an inspiring program. And being under 6’. He was a gamble.

The biggest risk with Cale was that he had a longer developmental arc than Miro*, not in his size or talent. This was always the big point of contention, some people used his league & NCAA commitment to question his talent, while those of us that were fans of his argued that it just reflected the ground he needed to cover before he'd be ready.

*which is admittedly an increase in risk, as the longer a development arc the higher the chances a prospect stagnates before completing it, but that's a very different type of risk.

AVs needed DMen.

When Heiskanen went off the Board, I thought the AVs would have pursued another Forward or traded down.

Makar was a gamble and don't believe anyone thought he would be this good.

Check posts from since after he was drafted. There are definitely some who did think he would be this good. Including me .

Except for maybe Joe Sakic. If you watch the draft video, Sakic cannot get up there and pick him fast enough.
There was a rumour at the draft that Vancouver had him 1st overall as well, though I doubt they're too upset with their consolation prize in Pettersson.

Makar is looking absolutely ridiculous though, excited to watch his career develop!

Avs fans have a lot to look forward to. Makar was flat our fun to watch in the playoffs. Looking forward to what he can do in a full season. Love that the Avs fans dove right in. The guy with the head of Kale was priceless!

Girard - Makar combo was surprisingly good.

I thought their size might be a detriment and some cases were a problem in the defensive zone, but in the open ice, transition and offensive zone they're nearly impossible to catch.
