Because they called a billionaire corrupt? Is he really that thin-skinned? If I was a voter on the fence, this would not present Meruelo in a good light at all.
If I plastered signs all over a city calling you corrupt what would you do?

Just sit there and do nothing? Or just let it get worse?

I single that out because its clearly a tactic designed to paint the opponents of the project as being racist. Now if there is an opposition piece that makes reference to his race then go ahead and post it and I'll change my mind.

So then you think being proud of your heritage and expressing it is wrong?

Exactly…. so it shouldn’t matter that whomever wrote the release put it in or not.

Yet here we are….

No, it should have nothing to do with it, so neither side should make reference to it.

Also, if you don't want to be called 'corrupt' by a whole bunch of signs all over town, you shouldn't have dealt with a bunch of your suppliers in different businesses through the years in such a way as to force them to take you to court to pay what you owed them. Meruelo's reputation is his problem.

Also, if you don't know to be called 'corrupt' by a whole bunch of signs all over town, you shouldn't have dealt with a bunhc of your suppliers in different businesses through the years in such a way as to force them to take you to court to pay what you owed them. Meruelo's reputation is his problem.

So we’re talking about reputation based on innuendo. Other than the situation with Glendale… to date none of these vendors he’s supposed to have wronged have come forward with evidence in how they were wronged.

If you're going that route, nothing we call a race is a race. They are all ethnicities. We are all one race.

Well in one way, yes. Race is a social construct.

But in another way - it might be a social construct, but race is pretty well understood by everyone which gives it real power. Hispanic is a cultural identifier, not a racial one. You can be a white hispanic, a black hispanic, or an indigenous hispanic (or various mixtures of all three).

I would have one of my employees go count the yard signs the opposition put up and I would order five times as many as the opposition put up. I would use the hundreds of thousands of dollars I gave to my PAC to do a better job of getting my message out. This just makes Meruelo look even pettier than the Glendale breakup did and that wasn't great.

Well it’s easy for you (or anyone else) to say that from behind a keyboard.

By the way Tempe1st is now trying to fundraise off of the “big bad corrupt billionaire’s” threat to quash them when all he wants is for them to knock off the name calling.

I have to side with the take of "response is too salty by half" (strictly strategically speaking...I have no take on the ethics of either side) because...

....the most successful billionaires in the world are used to being called corrupt (whether they are or not) and by forces far stronger than whoever these Tempe 1st people are. It's an "act like you've been there" sorta thing. By dignifying this much, he looks less like a successful businessman and more like someone desperate to defend the idea that he's a successful businessman.

It's like Tyson Fury dignifying a rando in the gym who says he can't box. Why risk an injury on that?...it makes the rando look like they had more of a point that they actually had.

That said, I don't envision it affecting the ballot an iota because all signs have been that it will pass. But then again, I'm not on the ground. 🤷

Isn’t Auston Matthews Hispanic too? I know Leaf fans love that guy but it sure would be good for hockey in Arizona for him to play on the Coyotes. If was on that team the arena deal might have gotten done already. Right now what players do they have to help connect to the public there? They don’t really have a star and AM is both a star player and from there.
Hopefully the arena gets done and the club can build from a stable base.

No it's not. However, it's not relevant to ballot issue and the way it's been inserted into the statement its clear the campaign is trying to make it seem like Muereulo is a victim of racism. Like I said if anyone produces something from the anti-arena campaign that appears to be making an issue out of his race then I'll withdraw my comment.

Funny... because Tempe1st hasn't brought your interpretation up yet.

They're just playing the "big rich bully is picking on us poor locals" card..... and doing a little fund raising during their pity party on the side.

Meanwhile.... the Coyotes Foundation along with the team's staff participated in a Habitat For Humanity build day in Tempe.

When a government agency comes after you for not remitting your taxes for an extended period of time, can you really dismiss it as innuendo?

You mean when they send the bills to the wrong address?

The state had an old address IceArizona used that wasn’t updated when Meruelo took control of the franchise. So when they didn’t get a response they went to Glendale to recover it.

It’s a mistake that shouldn’t have happened (and the Coyotes publicly owned up to it) but it was corrected within 72 hours.

Wouldn't you think a professional organization with.... I don't know, maybe even just a drunken bookkeeper instead of a professional accountant ... would have noticed that the required state taxes hadn't been remitted for several months?

Gee, the CRA hasn't contacted me at this new address to ask for my income taxes for last year so I guess that means I don't have to pay it?

C'mon, Legend, we've come to expect better from you than this.

No matter how you want to look at it, it was a major screwup. But I’ve seen this state screw up a lot of things first hand.

In a day where the federal government can’t even keep proper track of its classified documents you can’t really discount anything.

And besides… the issue was remedied immediately.

The saving grace is that it's a special election.

hockey fans have a reason to come out and vote; so the other side basically has the more difficult task of getting every uninformed, complacent person to go vote for something. Which means they're going to be as salacious as possible in their advertising.
