I've been saying for years that we're contenders

This thread is way too premature. No one is eating crow for calling this team failures if all they manage is one playoff series win in 7 years.

Fantastic that they finally managed to win a round, but until they go on a deep run they haven't earned the title contenders. Hope they do, but no one should be told to eat crow regarding Dubas, Keefe or this roster until then.

If team Canada loses in the quarter final at a best on best tournament, does that mean that they weren't a contender going in, and that that collection of the best hockey players on the planet is conclusively proven less good than any team that finished ahead of them (even if they never played each other), and incapable of winning?

Can’t we just enjoy the fact that we finally won a playoff round and look to keep this train going all the way to the finals. Be glad we are still playing and many are not.
As a franchise (not this group) it’s been 19 years since we had this.
There will be plenty of time to argue in the summer if we get knocked out in round 2.
Leaf fans across the world, time to unite!

Contender is a subjective term and everyone seems to take it as meaning something different. I'm not sure where to draw the line myself but when a team is among the top 4-5 favorites to win, they IMO 100% meet the criteria and we've been there for years. JMHO.

BTW, if you look up the definition I think you'll find that every team still competing for the cup is a contender.

As far eating crow "regarding Dubas, Keefe or this roster", that's so vague, it really depends on what exactly you said. If you had doubts about them ever going deep, nothing wrong with that. If you were one of those saying will never win a playoff series or that the series was over after game 1 or a bunch of other nonsense, then you should chow down. :)

Want to know the difference between Team Canada and the Leafs? Do you really need me to say it?

Come on, don't make it so easy :)

If you want to be a child take the team name out. Concept remains.

A top qualifying seed that is one of the stronger teams on paper and favoured to win loses in the quarter final.
That team wasn't a contender going in, and that collection of players t is conclusively proven less good than any team that finished ahead of them (even if they never played each other), and incapable of winning.

True or false.

Fair enough, but you went far beyond that in your original post. But my point still stands that this thread is premature.

Or that saying that comes to mind when a running back does some embarrassingly over-the-top dance in the end zone after a TD, "act like you've been here before". Just maybe everyone cool their jets a little bit as this victory is just the first step in what hopefully will be a few more?

I'm thrilled that we finally won a round, but believe me, I'm miles away from doing any celebrating. I've made dozens and perhaps hundreds of posts telling people to stop bragging. Whether it's bragging about a record breaking November, about Marner's consecutive games points streak, Matthews 60 goals or whatever is happens to be, I'm always cringing. I keep saying that regular season accomplishments are a nice cherry on top if and only if the team has playoff success but if you keep losing the playoffs it means nothing and the braggarts look like fools.

We have won a round, that's always reason to be happy but as far as accomplishments go, not that big a deal and if don't win the next round, I will consider this season overall to be a massive disappointment. And the same applies to the next round, if we play fantastic and lose to a team that just played better than us I can live with that but we should be favorites, and I expect it to be more likely that we win that as well and go to the finals.

We had done NOTHING yet that's worthy of bragging about and you won't catch me bragging. But that said, saying that we will simply never win even one playoff round with this core/coach/GM was always a really dumb thing to say, people saying this kind of nonsense have been polluting threads for years now behaving like emotional vampires and ridiculing anyone who said this team could go deep and those people are the ones who should be eating a little bit of crow right about now.

Lets revisit this thread after round two.
No need.

This was strictly about the team not built to win a round according to the lowest common denominators.

Start a new thread if you so choose.

Let me clarify. This entire premise of this thread is nonsense, and as far as I'm concerned this thread violates site rules for trolling, and should have been locked from the first post. You are guilty of pitting the cheerleader type fans against the realistic type fans in order to elicit a reaction, and are in fact, a troll.

Have a nice day.
Nonsense. The realistic fans have supported the team all year.We looked forward to all the games, and many of us were under constant attack for their realism. The cheerleader fans as you seem to optimistically call yourselves, spent much of the year whining about the team. There were few cheers. I don't think there is anything wrong with the thread except that it is a bit premature.

I'll take one serving of "Schenn is a lot better than I thought", please.
To be fair, he's good in the playoffs because the game is closer and harder hitting.
In the regular season how many more penalties would he get?
Only time will tell.
That said I think he will be good in the regular season too, especially paired with Rielly.

Honestly, I though he wouldn't help at all - just one more of the five (six? seven? ten? I've lost count) fourth pairing defencemen we tried this year.

He's been a very pleasant surprise, and right now I couldn't care less how well he does next season.

I don't read other teams threads a whole lot because who has the time really, but I can't see them as being the vitriol filled negativity as are any normal everyday Leafs threads. You want to know what nonsense is, just open up any thread, even what are supposed to be the feelgood threads aren't immune to some bs someone will bring up about something that has no relation or bearing on the subject matter. I'm not sure how people can't see how f***ibg tiring and old that gets, especially when it's coming from supposedly mature and reasoning adults, who turn into frightened needy children at the first signs of adversity.

Agree 100%

I try to avoid GDTs during games because there so much toxic negativity. If we're winning by 2 or more goals then the negativity dies down a bit. If we're up by 1 then there are as many negative posts as positive ones. If we're tied then the negativity and toxic comments bubble up. If we're losing by 1, people are freaking out - fire Keefe - fire Dubas - those contracts - Holl etc. If we're down by 2 or more then its a complete rebuild.

Heck when we were on a hot streak while having many D injured, almost every post game thread turned into a hate Reilly thread. It is exhausting.

I learned to avoid the forum during GDT and post losses. Because is it friggin miserable here.
